We posted an item recently about U.S. Sen. Tim Scott getting “God-fondled” by a bunch of social conservatives affiliated with the American Renewal Project – a pro-Christian, pro-Israel advocacy group.
One of the fondlers? Former SCGOP chariman Chad Connelly – the ex-Amway salesman we were duped into endorsing back when we cared about who ran the so-called “Republican” party in South Carolina.
Anyway … it turns out Scott wasn’t the only politician who got the personal touch from The Almighty. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) – the undisputed fiscal conservative hero of the Obamacare debate and a leading 2016 presidential candidate – also got loved up on by Connelly and his God Squad.
And while the picture wasn’t quite as Falwellesque as Scott’s … it’s still just a touch too close to snake handling and speaking in tongues for our tastes.
As we noted in assessing Scott’s “prayer-a-palooza,” we’re all for free religious expression. Its as unambiguous and inalienable a right as there is – and it doesn’t stop once you get elected to higher office.
We just think these sorts of displays – in addition to being politically inadvisable – run counter to the way Christians are told to pray (i.e. “in secret,” as commanded by Christ in the Sermon on the Mount).
Obviously Scott, Cruz and numerous other politicians disagree with us on that score …
