Want A New Phone? Sell Your Old One First
New iDevices (iPhones, iPods, iPads, etc.) are launching at least twice a year these days – eager to appease the millions of customers vying for the sleekest, fastest, most innovative smart phones, tablets and portable music players.
With new technology being introduced to the market on such a regular basis, paying out of pocket for these new devices can get pretty expensive. And while your provider may let you upgrade once a year (or more frequently in some cases) – you’ve still gotta come up with the coin to buy that spiffy new phone.
Just ask our founding editor Will Folks (a.k.a. Sic Willie) – who is eligible to upgrade from his old iPhone 4S to a “space gray” iPhone 5S but has been told by his wife in no uncertain terms “that’s not happening.” Why not? “You can’t afford it,” she told him.
Hmmmmm … what to do.
Here’s an idea: As you may have seen in online ads or in television spots there are companies out there willing to pay you for your ‘old’ phone so you can purchase that new model you’ve been coveting. Of course not all phone-selling methods are created equal.
Selling your phone online has its perks: higher payouts, a reference for customer service (if needed), a digital transaction record … and did we mention higher payouts?
If you decide to sell your phone online, here are the top three vendors …
NOTE: The following list covers payouts for 32GB iPhones (all models). Don’t forget, you’ll always get the most money for your phone if you keep it in good shape!
Totem gives you a quote, mails you a prepaid envelope, and then pays you via PayPal or check. The company says it pays within 48 hours of the device being inspected and wiped clean by a Totem technician.

iPhone 4 : $50 – $105
iPhone 4S : $80 – $175
iPhone 5 : $110 – $275
USell acts as middle-man to connect you with its network of buyers. After you choose the offer you want (there’s quite a wide range), you’ll be sent a prepaid envelope. Payments are made in cash or via PayPal. USell says you’ll get paid within five days of when the buyer receives the phone.
iPhone 4 : $10 – $96

Selling your phone online requires you to wait a few days to receive your money, but they do pay higher amounts so patience pays off. Being able to get up to $290 for your current iPhone can make buying the new one a lot easier!
