Columbia, SC ? Following the passage of bipartisan legislation to end the federal government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling to avoid default, SCDP Chairman Jaime Harrison released this statement:
?Tonight’s action is a victory of pragmatism over politics, where compromise won out over rigid ideology. South Carolina families can sleep easier knowing the government is reopening and we will not destroy the economy with a reckless default. Tonight, scores of Democrats and Republicans lived up to their oaths to protect and defend this great nation – but not the majority of South Carolina’s elected officials. What a disgrace.
“Sen. Tim Scott, and every Republican from South Carolina in the House voted to default on our obligations and keep the government shut down. The GOP Representatives were elected to serve the people of our state and improve the country; Tim Scott was appointed by Tea-Party Governor Nikki Haley to go to Washington to help her carry out her will. Rather than standing up for South Carolinians, every one of them chose to play Tea-Party politics despite the damage to our families and our economy. It’s time for new leadership for South Carolina.

A headline from Sunday’s LA Timesblog screams, “Is the media keeping women out of politics?” Indeed, it seems the media establishment must be worried about this. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of California Lt. Governor Gavin, has a new film at the Sundance festival that once again accuses the old boys of keeping women out. “If you think we’re in the midst of historic times for women in politics with Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and even Sarah Palin on the national stage,” notes blogger Amy Kaufman, “one documentary at Sundance is urging you to think again.”
“Slameing” is part of “a roundup of media clips depicting women as promiscuous or catty.” To provide commentary on this, “a stellar lineup of prominent women leaders and academics” are brought in, including Katie Couric and Gloria Steinem. After the showing of the film, actress Geena Davis conducted a town-hall style presentation, featuring “statistics about how poorly women come across in children’s media,” and someone from Common Sense Media promised (threatened?) that “Slameing” would be shown to various media moguls.
“’We have to shame them, period. It’s disgusting,’ he said, almost shouting.” He’s into the spirit of it all. And the Lt. Governor remarked that when he showed his wife a new Parks and Recreation Department logo of a child on a swing, he dutifully added a ponytail to the picture. “We just changed it,” he told her, “because you sensitized me to these gender issues.”

Exactly who are the women being so unfairly treated by these big, bad media giants? Are they Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, or could they – “even” – be Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann or Nikki Haley?
They voted against it because Oblamer only agreed to something that said we are going to do this all over again in 3 months. Imagine that….the president agreeing to something that makes absolutely no sense and brings absolutely no resolve to the problem.
