Nancy Mace: Big DC Buzz

Each morning, reporter Mike Allen at The Politico publishes an email briefing chock full of must-read material for political junkies in Washington, D.C. – and beyond.

Headlining this morning’s briefing? Charleston, S.C. businesswoman Nancy Mace – who is gearing up to challenge liberal U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.) in next year’s Republican primary elections in the Palmetto State.

Here’s what Allen had to say about Mace’s impending candidacy …

Top Republicans tell us they’re worried Sen. Graham – heralded in Washington as a dealmaker, but savaged by tea partiers back home as “Liberal Lindsey” — could be in trouble. Having two opponents helps him, by dividing the competition. But Nancy Mace – who led her remarks at a recent event with a hunting tale, about fetching quail for her dad — is the type of conservative who has crossover appeal with wealthy suburban Republican women. She could be a real problem if she can raise money and get some political traction. Top Republicans are more worried about Graham than about Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell: McConnell is running against a novice (although well-connected) Dem in a deep red state. Graham is running against two more-conservative Republicans in a deep red state.

Wow … Mace couldn’t have written that any better herself.

Allen also provided his readers with the follow biographical sketch of the new candidate …

She graduated (with honors) in three years, and published a memoir, “In the Company of Men: A Woman at the Citadel.” Her father is retired Army Brig. Gen. Emory Mace, who is the most decorated living graduate of The Citadel, and was commandant of cadets (Citadel’s third in command) while she was there. Per The Citadel, she later “graduated with a Master of Arts degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Georgia. She is the founder and president of The Mace Group, a multi-service business consulting group in Charleston. She serves as a board member at Childspring International,” a faith-based medical organization.

In addition to a feature story in The Daily Caller, Mace also got big buzz in The Huffington Post as well as lots of in-state coverage. Not a bad showing for a political novice …

In the race to become the “anti-Graham,” Mace is emerging as the early frontrunner – just as we predicted. In fact if she’s able to translate her initial buzz into some early endorsements and fundraising success, she could pretty much kill off the chances of her two social conservative challengers – S.C. Sen. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg) and former congressional candidate Richard Cash.

I wouldn’t vote for any of them in the general election, but I would love to see her knock Lindsey off. Just for shits and giggles.

Mace is another social conservative poser (very pro-life/pro-birth like Bright, who she wants to distance herself from). And making it through the Citadel by riding your daddy’s coattails kinda diminishes the accomplishment. And then there was that thing about her getting those other cadets thrown out while she was there, right? FITS obviously wants to draw a distinction between Mace and Bright, but like I said earlier, being the “anti-Graham” isn’t enough to win. Bright could put up a better challenge – Mace is a novice with no political experience (sorry, designing websites doesn’t count), and Bright at least has experience. Not a fan of Bright at all, and Lindsey’s still going to win regardless, but Bright is the better candidate.

While I’m not sure that Mace can get any “traction” or certainly not enough to beat Light loafers Lindsey she will start with about 40%. Mark it down. Doc Oc or whoever Sandman’s Primary opponent ( from Prosperity?) in 2006 received 37% or so.

I do not think Lee “<" Bright or Dick Cash will be factors at all (may lessen Mace's traction to 30%-35%).

Good luck to anyone who brings even the slightest hope of sending Graham packing his loafers, but likely the GOP “old guard” is extremely pleased with Mace’s possible entry into this race from out of nowhere. Another name on the ballot means a certain percentage of votes will be subtracted from any other serious challenger, thus sealing yet another victory for their favorite mouthpiece Graham…and what a mouthpiece he is! May as well get used to the idea of waking up to Lindsey’s face every Sunday morning in 2014 and beyond unless the anti-Graham front can unite behind a single solid challenger.

Reply
Smirks August 2, 2013 at 11:02 am

Graham still has to get 50% to avoid a runoff, no matter how many people run against him. Even having two candidates may not force him into a runoff, though, and he likely wouldn’t lose a runoff anyways. Such is life in SC.

Reply
vicupstate August 2, 2013 at 12:05 pm

If pushed into a runoff, Graham will be in big trouble. It would be a big story not just in the state, but nationally. The Club for Growth and others with money would coalesce around his opponent. If you didn’t vote for him the first time, why would you in the runoff?

Running as an independent or as a Liberatarian will get you know where, a proven with Ron Paul. When he did run as a republican he got twice the votes, but still lost. Look, if she’s written two articles that have been mildly read on the Huffington Post and some other publication, then I don’t see how anyone could say she is not qualified to be a U.S. Senator…I hope my sarcasm vibe is coming through the computer well enough?

Especially because she is an attachment parent and breastfed her kids until they were 4. Gross.

She basically breastfed Will Folks for several years until he couldn’t afford her services and then Will changed over to this current low budget site.

To each his own, and that wouldn’t influence my vote one way or the other, but yeah: Yuck. Four years is too damn old to be breastfeeding.
Parents, you’re supposed to wean your kids and teach them to eat. That’s part of your JOB.

“We need someone in office that isn’t a politician”
She’s running for office. That makes her a politician. And if she gets elected (she won’t, but if), she’ll be there as long as she can hang on.
She’s just a typical Libertarian, railing against government but angling to get a government paycheck for herself.

Seeking better Republicans. My comment on her kids was to defend the fact that she has family values and keeps them. Yes, running for office by definition makes her a politician. But, it seems to me, for the sake of saying it, you like being a smart ass. Because anyone can twist any words into what they want. You must be a Marine, so I will write slow…..She.has.not.been.a. politician.in.the.past. So that would make her not be a typical politician now. She’s proven her worth as a business maker and a Mom. She has not spent her entire career getting paid with our tax dollars and not accomplishing anything (politicians). Perhaps I should have stated that she is not a “career” politician. Funny name by the way.

Reply
MajorC August 2, 2013 at 9:38 pm

Her “family values” consisted of helping run a soft porn website where posters such as “9 inch” spewed deviant and perverted postings on a daily basis. Yep, she protected the 1st Amendments rights for many of Fits’ Faithful. Glad she kept polishing that big old gold ring of hers.

“will hear more about her kids than anything else.”

That’s awesome. I don’t care about the economy or our foreign interventionism or our crumbling infrastructure, I just want to hear about Mace’s kids.

Unfortunately, the “Up Country” will never go along with 2 “Low Country” Senators. It was a big enough shock when we ended up with 2 Up-Country senators with Lindsey and DeMint.

Not if you are a real native (my family has been here since 1719). Edgefield, Aiken, Lexington, Richland, Kershaw, and other “midlands” counties are generally considered “Upcountry” but are certainly not Upstate.

Guest, in 40 years here, I have never heard that geographical division of the state from others or used it myself, or knew what it was. So, while you may be correct on this – the “upcountry” may not rebel so much at two lowcountry senators – since they don’t konw who the hell they are. The upstaters on the hand…might.

Only a tiny fraction of Citadel graduates actually serve in the military these days. But the school will be important when SC secedes again and needs to set up its own military.

I doubt she stands a chance, but all of you questioning “what qualifies her to run” should be ashamed of yourselves. What qualifies her is her citizenship as an American. We have enough professional politicians as it is. Our great country would be much better off if we had more citizen politicians who used common sense and actually cared about what the’re constituency cared about.

Those of you who actually can allow yourself to read what others here contribute, the comments or article submissions that actually move the ball forward to identify problems and offer solutions, as well as offer insights from personal experience and sound personal research that may refute a perception or support, you guys, not those guys of the bigoted unbending stripe of the liberal, progressive, socialist (whatever they call themselves this week) whom often mark their posts with shrill and bigoted backwash, not you guys but “you guys”, formerly speaking may of seen I gave Richard Cash 250.00 to run against Graham this year in the primary. Let me tell you, while I breath, I hope that class acts like Mr Cash and Nancy Mace continue to rise above the shrill and bigoted voices to run for public office. I plan to donate to Nancy’s bid for the US Senate. It is this important. In ten months, Lindsey Graham can be sent back to DC with his pink slip. That’s right. The winner of the primary, the human being that defeats Lindsey in June 2014, will allow him just 6 more months in office to plan for his retirement!

That said, looking at today’s Community Poll voting results, I find it disingenuous that 281 people made known that Lindsey already has their vote. In fact, knowing that those people probably get out twice a week for bridge or a church function and would not even be aware of young FITS and his politics, reminds me of our primary process. The open primary process is meant to be accommodating all persons a voice, a vote in selecting the best candidates for political office. Please, all of you Democrat liberal, progressive, socialist shrill and bigoted types, do not fuck it up for everyone and vote for Lindsey in our open primary in 2014 as you seemingly have done in today’s Community Poll. If you must, join the rest of us concerned, learned citizenry to vote for the best qualified in 2014.

Whether she wins or loses, this race will be much more difficult on her than her time at the Citadel because her dad may be unable to rain down hell on those who don’t provide her with special treatment during the election – unlike what happened when she was in college. Uh-oh.

She is a political hack who takes money from Politicians and gives some to Will Folks so he does not write anything bad about them. What has she accomplished. Granted she started a company (Is it just her) and was a partner with a soft porn site. Her daddy’s a General. Big deal, how does that make her a better candidate? It does not. I knew some generals who kids were brats. (Not saying she was one, but she does not give her a plus because her daddy had a star) FYI as a veteran, just because you go to the citadel, does not give you military experience. You went to a tough college, but you did not face any bullets.

True. That Bill Connor guy who’s going to run has 10 years active duty military experience and I think he’s still in the reserves. And he’s going to challenge Graham on the MIC as an actual veteran. I think that’s a much stronger position to be coming from.
