Chantal Falls Apart

Tropical Storm Chantal has disintegrated … in fact it’s not even a tropical storm anymore.

The once fast-moving system – which was gaining strength over the Caribbean during the early part of the week – has been downgraded to a tropical wave after passing over Hispaniola. And while the storm still packs maximum sustained winds of more than 45 miles per hour, it no longer features the closed circulation necessary to be classified as a tropical system.

Even better for coastal residents? It’s unlikely Chantal will reorganize in the coming days …

That’s excellent news … especially when you consider this storm was projected to run smack dab into South Carolina, which has seen more than its fair share of rainfall over the last  few months.

It’s even better news for the media, which will now be spared the ridiculous of having to report incessantly on a storm named “Chantal.”

Seriously people …

Anyway, while South Carolina has dodged another tropical bullet forecasters are still calling for an “extremely active” hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean – which means there will be plenty of storms to track over the next 2-3 months.

Don’t worry, the next weather system upgrade comes with the ability to control weather. “We promised you an active hurricane season, and by golly, we’re gonna give it to you!”

Republicans are somewhat responsible for passive storms, national democrats for really bad ones. At least at this website.

I for one like the new naming conventions.

Bring on hurricane LaShonda, Tyrone, etc. At least then we can expect some federal aid after they’ve run their course.

Not counting BigT/GrandTango’s drivel…this is probably the dumbest thing I have read on this site.

Yes!

I think my greatest pet peeve is the hurricane season forecasting racket. These guys get paid shocking amounts of money, they issue 3 0r 4 forecasts at different times of the year….including some during the hurricane season. (That would be like Brett Parker letting you place an over/under bet in the third quarter of a game.) With the exception of the Katrina year, which NONE of them predicted, BTW), the average season doesn’t vary a great deal. In fact, I’d be willing to wager that if I took the twenty year data and threw out the highest and lowest two seasons and used the average as a null hypothesis prediction….i’d beat ’em all over any 5 year period.

But do I get paid 6 figures? NOOOOOOOO.

The misuse of the words “reign” and “rein” also piss me off.

*rant off
*steps of soapbox
*mixes a Crown & Ginger (it’s almost the weekend….)
*aaaaahhhhhhh.
