Former “Republican” U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island has decided to forego his “independent” label and become a member of the Democratic Party – further evidence of the meaningless of partisan labels in modern day American governance.
Chafee’s decision comes as he seeks a second term as governor of Rhode Island despite abysmally low approval ratings. How low? A recent Brown University poll found only 25.5 Rhode Islanders approving of his job performance.
Ouch …
A two-time supporter of U.S. President Barack Obama, Chafee consistently voted against tax cuts at the federal level (including income tax relief and the elimination of the death tax). He also consistently voted in favor of new government spending – and is an adamant opponent of parental choice at all levels of government.
Topping it all off, Chafee is rabidly anti-gun and refers to Christmas Trees as “holiday trees.”
Seriously …
Here’s the question: Why did Republicans ever let this guy in their party in the first place?
That’s the fundamental problem here: “Republicans” are – with a few exceptions – virtually indistinguishable to Democrats, and have been for some time. Lincoln Chafee is merely the latest in a long line of reminders of that painful fact.
