Court: No Bin Laden Pics

American taxpayers have spent God knows how much money  over the past twelve years prosecuting a so-called “War on Terror,” the only real victory of which was the 2011 assassination of al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

At least we think it was a victory …

This week, a three-member U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled that the federal government does not have to release more than fifty alleged photographs taken of bin Laden in the wake of Operation Nepture Spear, the military raid on the terrorist leader’s secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. In other words all of the bin Laden “death photos” will remain classified.

Hmmmm …

Look, we wear our share of tin foil – but we don’t doubt for a second that bin Laden is dead. Of course that’s not to say we trust the official version of events surrounding his demise.

But whether you’re a fit-to-be-tied conspiracy theorist or a blissfully ignorant swallower of U.S. President Barack Obama’s benevolent government worldview, the fact remains you paid for these pictures – and the raid that produced them.

Which means you should be able to see them if you want …

Of course the court didn’t address that aspect of the debate. Instead, it argued that the government properly withheld the images so as to avoid offending Muslim sensibilities.

“It is undisputed that the government is withholding the images not to shield wrongdoing or avoid embarrassment, but rather to prevent the killing of Americans and violence against American interests,” its opinion states.

Sheesh … what a nation of pussies we’ve become.

The only thing that would offend Muslim sensibilities would be if he had been caught wearing white lace stockings, bra and high heels.

My tax dollars paid for the F-22s. I should be able to fly one if I want.

My tax dollars paid for the Oval Office. I should be able to sit in it if I want.

My tax dollars paid for the HK416 that Delta Force uses. I should be able to fire it if I want.

According to Sic Willie, I get to have access to whatever my tax dollars paid for.

My tax dollars paid Will Folks’ salary when he worked for Mark “Staying True” Sanford. I want it back for failure to adequately render services.

The Obama Administration gets most things wrong, but not here. The minute these photos were released, they’d be thrown up on Islamist websites to recruit terrorists. I’d bet $20 that a terrorist attack would happen within the month. Since fighting the “War On Terror” isn’t something navel-gazing isolationists like Sic Willie have the stomach to do, then don’t encourage more terrorism. After all, I thought Sic Willie argued that people bomb us for our violating high-minded constitutional principles; what would they do with a picture of bin Laden with a bullet through his head?

So you’re comfortable with the government being the arbiter of deciding
when to deem highly relevant public documents classified, simply because
they declare “it’s for own our own good and safety?” I sure as hell am
not. And as for the photos being used to recruit terrorists, if that’s
the justification for the non-release of the photos, then we should
immediately withdraw all troops from the Middle East, end the War in
Afghanistan and the covert wars in Yemen and Pakistan, cease all drone
strikes in the Muslim world, and cease all aid and support for Israel,
because those policies, much more so than pictures of a dead Bin Laden,
are the impetus for Muslim men to become terrorists. But none of that
will happen. Continued policies like these give traction to those in
tin foil hats, because our government’s obsession with secrecy is
frightening.

Comfortable? Never. Resigned to government having some discretion? Yes, because that’s how government has to work. Whether the US government has spies in China is highly relevant, but I don’t want it made public. If the feds are working to foil a terror plot by X or Y group is highly relevant, but I don’t need to necessarily know RIGHT NOW. The US government has kept certain things secret since our founding. Get used to it.
