We send our children off to school each day, trusting that they will return to us safely. However, there seems to be evidence of systemic abuse of children and subsequent cover-ups taking place. The abuse is occurring most often to our children with special needs, our population that is the most vulnerable. Richland County is the second most populous county in South Carolina and Richland School District One is the state’s seventh-largest school district. It has a high population of minority children, and its superintendent, administration, school board, and many persons holding positions of power are African-American. Information has emerged that indicates that many times in the last decade, there have been conditions favorable to shine a light on the illegal and damaging conditions within the District. However, other local entities work to protect the District from having to answer to its crimes. Sadly. reverse racism also appears to play a huge factor in the failure of many of the systems put in place in the county to protect our children. More about that later…
Through investigation and banding together with other parents whose children have been abused, it’s become apparent that this has been a disturbing and nearly impenetrable trend for quite some time. By uniting with other parents in an underground sort of way, documentation and horror stories about other children being assaulted in Richland One (with their parents being pressured keep quiet about the incidents) are coming to light. In talking with numerous parents, it appears to be commonplace for the District to even intimidate parents, especially those who have children with special needs. Quite often, all it takes is the promise to have the offender transferred to a different school within the district. It’s so common, there’s even a phrase that is used among teachers to refer to it. They call it, “Taking out the dirty laundry.” I plan to use this blog as a way to air out the dirty laundry. It’s time for the wrongdoers to be exposed.
This is a serious issue concerning the safety of children and the cover up of a school district’s gross negligence. These stories need to be told. People need to be aware of what’s happening. I feel confident that there are more parents and children that have wanted to come forward, but have been afraid to do so.
