TIPS, COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS FROM FITS READERS

Welcome to the wire!

America is now just four days away from the Mayan Apocalypse, eight days from Christmas and fourteen days away from the “fiscal cliff.”

Of course we’re only a few hours away from  S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s announcement of an interim replacement for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim DeMint.  Haley is widely expected to name U.S. Rep. Tim Scott of Charleston to the post – although some believe former S.C. First Lady Jenny Sanford has the inside track on getting the nod.

Haley will make her announcement at 12:00 noon EST at a press conference at the South Carolina State House.

(Haley selected Scott, by the way …)

Obviously the big story nationwide is the ongoing fallout from Friday’s school shooting in Newton, Connecticut that killed 27 people – including 20 children.  We’ve written extensively on the subject – including this controversial take – and we expect the aftermath of the tragedy and the ensuing debate over gun control to dominate the news this week.

CONNECTICUT SHOOTING: JESUS TO THE RESCUE?

Twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate. Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air. They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there. They were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what to say. They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

“Where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse. “This is heaven.” declared a small boy. “we’re spending Christmas at God’s house.” When what to their wondering eyes did appear, but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near. He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same. Then He opened His arms and He called them by name. And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring Those children all flew into the arms of their King and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace, one small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face. And as if He could read all the questions she had, He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad.”

Then He looked down on earth, the world far below He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe… then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, “Let My power and presence re-enter this land!” “may this country be delivered from the hands of fools” “I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools!” then He and the children stood up without a sound. “Come now my children, let me show you around.” excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran. All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can. and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight, “in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

FITS: Hmmmmm … not sure how to respond to that.

CONNECTICUT SHOOTING: THE WORDS OF MORGAN FREEMAN?

Actor Morgan Freeman on the school shooting in Connecticut:

“You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here’s why.

It’s because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I’ve seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem.”

FITS: Nice letter … but Morgan Freeman didn’t write it.  According to his publicist the statement is an internet hoax.

CONNECTICUT SHOOTING: ARM THE TEACHERS

(Re: SC Teachers Arm Themselves) YES!!!!! We should not only let our teachers carry firearms at school we should pay for their weapons, permits and training too. STOP THE VIOLENCE!!!

FITS:  Interesting take ….

CONNECTICUT SHOOTING: LAWS WON’T WORK

The shooter in Connecticut was legally barred from owning a weapon.  He broke the law.  That’s the thing about gun laws — people break them.

FITS: Agreed …

FITS IS LIBERAL?

(RE: SC Lawmakers Sticking It To Cops) The cop retirement piece is the first outright liberal thing I think I’ve ever seen you write.

FITS: Supporting fair pay and benefits for law enforcement isn’t liberal. Remember: Law enforcement is one of the few things government should do.

INTERSTATE 526 UPDATE

(Charleston) County Council votes to build I-526

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20121214/PC16/121219648/1165/county-council-votes-to-build-i-526

(Excerpts)

The long-stalled completion of Interstate 526 shifted back into gear Thursday, when Charleston County Council voted to build it. Council members voted 5-4 in favor of completing the road across Johns and James islands, a project that has been on the books since the 1970s.  Even though the $558 million project was approved, it will be years before construction begins. It faces a lengthy federal approval process, and likely challenges to environmental permits.

FITS: Terrible news.  This is a totally unnecessary project and Charleston should have followed the state’s lead in rejecting it.

OBAMACARE NULLIFICATION

(RE: SC Dead Last) South Carolina holds her opportunity for a bright economic opportunity in this: a bill penned by Bill Chumley H3101. It is a bill which NULLIFIES obama-care. The Supreme Court and John Roberts CANNOT make law. The finding handed down by that body is an OPINION only and has ZERO constitutional authority. When S.C. passes this bill and joins New Jersey, Oklahoma, Arizona, Montana, Alabama, and Texas, she will begin to witness a resurgence of economic activity. On January 8th, I invite you to join Chumley and his co-sponsors in Columbia and stand in support of this bold and constitutionally correct effort. It now comes down to the powers we, the State of South Carolina and her people, grant to the federal government in accordance with the tenth amendment. This IS the path to freedom, liberty, and economic prosperity.

Now if you want to believe the “research” of the likes of Harvard that’s your choice. I’ll take the U.S. constitution.

-John Matheson

FITS: No website has railed any harder against Obamacare than FITS. And we are more than happy to take a look at Rep. Chumley’s legislation. Having said that, we would suggest that the best first step in battling this abomination is to vote down its onerous Medicaid expansion.

SPEAKING OF THE HALEYS

The “internal audit administrator” at (the S.C. Department of Revenue) is named Kimberly Haley.  Any relation to the governor’s family?

FITS: We’re not sure.  Neither SCDOR nor the governor’s office responds to our media inquiries.  Whether she’s related to the Haleys or not, she clearly dropped the ball, though.

SOUTH CAROLINA FAST FACT: On January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan’s Continental forces decisively defeated the British Legions of the infamous Banastre Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens.  The battle – which rallied the Colonial cause – was the inspiration for the climactic scene in the movie The Patriot.
