Ex-Cincinnati Bengals Cheerleader Pleads Guilty
SARAH JONES AVOIDS JAIL TIME AFTER HAVING SEX WITH 16-YEAR-OLD
A former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader (a.k.a. “Ben-Gal”) will avoid jail time after she pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a sixteen-year-old boy in her home state of Kentucky. The teacher-student affair took place last year while Sarah Jones was a ninth grade English teacher at Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, Kentucky.
“I began a romantic relationship while he was a student and I was in a position of authority,” Jones admitted.
The 27-year-old cheerleader was sentenced to five years probation and banned from ever teaching again after copping to charges of sexual abuse and unlawfully using an electronic device to solicit illegal “activity.” Jones – who was a “Ben-Gal” for five years – could have gone to jail for a decade had she not copped a plea.
Jones’ mother, Cheryl – a principal in the same Kentucky school district – also avoided jail time on obstruction of justice charges after she was busted tampering with evidence in the case. According to prosecutors, Cheryl Jones instructed the boy involved in the affair to delete racy text messages received from her daughter.
The boy – a football player – was sixteen years old at the time of the affair. Jones was 26, and engaged to be married to another man.
Jones is no stranger to controversy. In 2009, she sued a website that accused her of being a “slut” with “two STDs” who had “sex in the classroom.” She was also accused of having sex with Cincinnati Bengals’ football players.
Frankly, we think this whole thing is ridiculous. According to Kentucky law, the age of consent in the Bluegrass State is sixteen. The only reason Jones was arrested and prosecuted is because there is a separate Kentucky law which makes it a felony for someone in a position of authority to have sex with someone under 18 years of age.
We’re not condoning what Jones did, but this was clearly a consensual relationship that in no way constituted sexual abuse. Also it’s hard to see how Jones could be described as being in a position of authority over this boy unless he was a student in her classroom or she was an administrator with oversight over the entire student body (pardon the pun).
