TIPS, QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM FITS READERS
Welcome to “the wire,” our pseudo-regular effort to engage the tips, comments and questions we receive here at FITS News. As we continue working to improve this format (and prepare for the rollout of FITS 3.0) keep your tips, comments and questions coming!
Also check back later in the day as we sometimes add new items to the mix.
To the wire!
MITT ROMNEY AND THE 47 PERCENT
I sincerely hope you will be addressing these comments at some point.
FITS: We will be … today, even.
Your website failed to report on last month’s retail sales numbers (after reporting on these figures several times previously). Is this information not important anymore? The numbers were terrible by the way. Your website should be all over this.
FITS: Doing the best we can … we’ll try to have something up on that shortly.
RE: WHERE’S THE ETHANOL OUTRAGE?
You should get a pulitzer for your ethanol article—the first correct one I have read. Congress is not very energy savvy.
FITS: Railing on this government-created industry is hardly original, but thank you …
GETTING IT RIGHT ON GAS PRICES
Will: Thank you for finally reporting on the percentage income component of gas prices in South Carolina. It is about time someone pointed out the ugly truth behind our “cheapest gas in America” talking point.
FITS: You’re welcome …
What’s your prediction on the SC unemployment numbers coming out later this week?
FITS: Tough to tell … nationally the rate went down (slightly) but that was due almost exclusively to people leaving the labor force. South Carolina’s labor force has shrunk by 10,000 workers over the last two months, so it will be interesting to see if that trend continued in August. Also coming out later this month are updated tourism numbers.
Jody Barr at WIS is enjoying your sloppy seconds again …
FITS: Actually the deficit at the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) was first reported by The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper last week.
JAKIE KNOTTS’ DAUGHTER
Please cover the incident where Jakie Knotts’daughter punched out a 14-year-old boy at Wild Hare in Lexington. This happened several months ago. She was arrested, but there has been no reporting.
FITS: Seek … and ye shall find.
JAKIE KNOTTS’ SIGNS
Can you believe this guy?

FITS: No one has ever lost an election in South Carolina by holding themselves out to be something they’re not. In fact the last time we checked that’s the path to victory!
COST OF LEGISLATORS’ RETIREMENT BENEFITS
How much is the annual legislative retirement benefit?
FITS: Good question … looks like it’s about $2.4 million a year.
GETTING RIPPED OFF IN KERSHAW COUNTY
I would love to know how Kershaw County Council can vote to add $55 to our property tax bills every year without a vote by the people. Apparently it is a way to get more money to the sheriff’s office and less fortunate people of Kershaw County. They state it is a “fee” not a tax, but here is my question. If you are an older person in KC and you recieve homestead exemption (not required to pay property taxes on your first home) and you do not pay the $55 (because that is all your bill will show) can they sell your property? Are they going to kick all the old people out of their homes because they are not contributing to Jim Matthew’s vision for a bigger, badder sheriff’s office?
FITS: Welcome to South Carolina … grab your socks/ hose and pull.
DOUBLE STANDARD ON HELMET-TO-HELMET HITS
So D.J. Swearinger gets suspended for a game for head-hunting but this hit doesn’t even draw a flag?

FITS: This injustice was pointed out by one of our commenters … and we agree. If you’re going to enforce the rule (which we think is silly), enforce it. Having said that it’s not like South Carolina hasn’t had plenty of calls going its way this season.
DABO DASH CAM
The post on Clemson coach Dabo Swinney’s speeding ticket has been pulled from the internet. You guys had your chance and blew it. He was going 63 in a 35 and he and his brother acted the fool with the officer – but you guys are going to give him a pass? I call TATER.
FITS: Patience, grasshopper.
OLD MAN FOOTBALL
Possible bulletin board material for Missouri game …
FITS: Yup … we’d say definite bulletin board material.
To our good friend Jamie Dugan, who was the focus of a recent piece we wrote on the Second Amendment …

Also, happy birthday to our good friend S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Bamberg).
SOUTH CAROLINA FAST FACT: William Jennings Bryan Dorn was the first Democrat to lose the governor’s office in more than a century in 1974.
