HALEY SUPPORTERS INDIGNANT, SC DEMOCRATIC CHAIRMAN REFUSES TO APOLOGIZE
S.C. Democratic Party chairman Dick Harpootlian is refusing to apologize for his comparison of Gov. Nikki Haley to Adolf Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun (from the waist up, we’re guessing).
“Hell no. What am I apologizing for?,” Harpootlian told CNN’s Peter Hamby. “This is fake. Nikki Haley is feigning this. There is not a sincere bone in her body.”
Harpootlian went on to tell Hamby that he “wasn’t trying to insinuate that Nikki was a Nazi. I was saying that she was hanging out in an insular bunker in Charlotte when she won’t give access to the press here in South Carolina.”
Harpootlian made the controversial comment at a Democratic gathering in Charlotte, N.C., site of this week’s Democratic National Convention. The remark was a reference to Haley’s participation in a daily Mitt Romney news briefing – which is being held at a basement studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte. SCGOP officials immediately demanded an apology from the sharp-tongued trial lawyer.
“I am disgusted by Harpootlian’s comparison. He should apologize immediately,” SCGOP chairman Chad Connelly said in a statement.
Even one South Carolina Democrat said that Harpootlian’s comments went too far.
“(Harpootlian) has a long history of making off-the-cuff statements, but any comparison between an American politician and Nazi Germany is completely inappropriate and there is no place for it,” S.C. Sen. Joel Lourie (D-Richland) told The (Irmo, S.C.) Patch.
Lourie is Jewish.
Braun was Hitler’s mistress from 1932 to 1945 – when the pair committed suicide together in the Fuhrerbunker in Berlin as the Soviet Red Army bore down on the remnants of the German Army. Considered aloof and lazy, Braun never joined the Nazi Party. She was by all accounts completely non-political – a ski bunny who used her influence with the German dictator on only one occasion, when his “Total War” policy called for the production of female cosmetic products to cease.
UPDATE: The story continues … according to reporter Corey Hutchins at The (Columbia, S.C.) Free Times, former American Nazi Party presidential nominee John Taylor Bowles is describing Harpootlian’s comment as a “compliment” of Haley.
