The federal government is moving forward with an investigation into Obamacare grant money allegedly misappropriated by S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley, multiple sources are confirming to FITS.
Wait … South Carolina’s “Tea Party” governor accepted funds from U.S. President Barack Obama’s socialized medicine monstrosity?
That’s right … although not as much money as she “borrowed” from his federal highway fund last summer when her Department of Transportation couldn’t pay its bills (six weeks after Haley signed the largest budget in state history).
Anyway … we digress …
According to our sources, Haley and her staff are being actively investigated for the way her administration used Obamacare funds to hold a health care exchange panel whose outcome she predetermined. Haley later tried to conceal this fact from the public by refusing to comply with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
Last December, U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) called for an investigation of Haley.
“It was certainly not the intent for those taxpayer funds to be distributed for a predetermined and meaningless outcome,” Harkin said of Haley’s health care exchange panel. “Spending taxpayer funds to construct an ideologically-motivated façade not only violates Congress’s intent, but also the public’s trust in government.”
Haley has already lost her Department of Insurance director as a result of the scandal – or at least we’re told that his abrupt resignation is somehow tied to the investigation of Obamacare funds administered by his agency.
“The whole point of this commission should be to figure out how to opt out and how to avoid a federal takeover, NOT create a state exchange,” Haley wrote to her staff, according to an email published in an exclusive report by Renee Dudley of The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier.
Haley wrote that email shortly after signing an executive order that created the “South Carolina Health Care Exchange Planning Committee,” an entity funded out of the millions of dollars in Obamacare funding the Palmetto State has received – much of it going to Haley’s cabinet agencies.
In addition to this probe, Haley is facing a major lawsuit filed by prominent GOP donor over serious ethical lapses that occurred during her tenure as a State Representative. The governor is also purportedly the target of a federal investigation into the Sikh Religious Society of South Carolina – the temple run by her father, Ajit Randhawa.
Haley ran the books for the temple at a time when it is alleged to have perpetrated financial fraud.
Supporters of Haley downplayed the significance of Harkin’s investigation.
“The state breaks rules on federal funds all the time,” one Haley backer told FITS. “The penalty is recoupment.”
