The two-time defending national champion University of South Carolina baseball team held onto its No. 3 national ranking after an uninspiring season-opening sweep of Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

After struggling through its first two games against the Keydets, the Gamecocks’ offense exploded in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday – scoring thirteen runs (including a two-run homer from heralded freshman infielder TJ Costen).

Head coach Ray Tanner’s squad hosts Elon for a three-game series beginning on February 24. Here’s are the times for those games, all of which are scheduled to be played at Carolina Stadium:

February 24 – vs. Elon (3 p.m.)
February 25 – vs. Elon (1:30 p.m.)
February 26 – vs. Elon (1:30 p.m.)

Hopefully Tanner’s team will  do better than USC’s basketball team did against the former “fighting Christians.”

Florida remained the top-ranked team in the nation after winning two of three games against then-No. 25 Cal State Fullerton. Other SEC teams in the Top 25 include Arkansas (No. 4), Louisiana State (No. 7), Georgia (No. 9), Vanderbilt (No. 17) and Mississippi (No. 20).

Defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M – which will play in the SEC next season – is ranked No. 6.

Clemson – which took two of three from UAB last weekend – held at No. 16 in the rankings. The Tigers host Maine for a three-game series beginning February 24.
