SC House Democratic Caucus Statement

Clearing the Air on the State of the State Response

COLUMBIA, S.C. – It has come to light that a prominent blogger and the Democratic Party have both released inaccurate information regarding the selection of the 2012 respondent to Governor Nikki Haley’s State of the State Address.  The voters of South Carolina deserve to know the facts concerning this incident.

It is a longstanding custom between the Democrats in the House and in the Senate that the response rotates between House and Senate from year to year, and that the Caucus of each body makes the determination of which member will make the response.  As last year’s respondent was provided by the Senate, the House Democratic Caucus will select the respondent for this year’s address.  This custom will continue.

While there have been contrary statements to the press and press releases made by the SC Democratic Party, there has been no action taken to date, formally or informally, by the SC House Democratic Caucus in determining who will respond to the State of the State address.  The Caucus could take the matter up as early as next week when session begins, and will notify the press and all concerned parties as soon as such decision is made.

It is unfortunate that this whole incident could have been avoided if certain individuals would have simply confirmed their information before going public.
