Nikki Haley’s DMV Carpool Isn’t Happening?

In one of those stories that was bound to break sooner or later, S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has been called out for reneging on a promise made to 178,000 South Carolinians who currently lack a valid form of photo identification.

In an interview earlier this month with FOX Carolina (one of the local affiliates that the governor doesn’t consider to be a “tabloid” site), Haley said that she would personally drive these citizens to the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) so that they could pick up their shiny new taxpayer-funded ID cards.

“Find me those people who think that this is invading their rights — find — and I will go take them to the DMV myself and help them get that picture ID,” Haley said in the interview.

Why does this matter? Well, those cards are now required at the polls per the SCGOP’s new minority disenfranchisement … err, voter ID law.

Shortly after Haley’s boast hit the airwaves, the liberal website ThinkProgress pounced on the claim – providing a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation on the amount of time it would take for Haley to fulfill her pledge.

“If every single one of these 178,000 voters were to present themselves to the governor’s mansion and request the free ride Haley just offered them, it would take just over 7 years, 4 months, 3 weeks and 5 days if she spends every single minute that the DMV is open doing nothing but playing taxi driver,” ThinkProgress noted. “That’s nearly two full terms — assuming there’s no traffic.”

Obviously no one expected Haley to honor her promise … not necessarily because it’s infeasible, but because Haley almost never tells the truth anymore.

Eager to catch Haley in yet another lie, South Carolina Democrats tracked down a 76-year-old Army veteran named Robert Tucker – whose family called Haley’s office in an effort to secure him a ride to the DMV.

Take a look …

Ouch …

Making matters worse? In addition to being unwilling to help – Haley’s own staffers were apparently unaware of the governor’s promise.

“Whether she is misstating her job record, her own employment record or lying to Army veterans like Robert Tucker, it’s obvious she just doesn’t have it in her to tell the truth,” S.C. Democratic party chairman Dick Harpootlian said in a statement.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey refused to respond to our request for comment.

Just what we, in Lexington, have known about her and her family for years. I have been told, don’t know for sure, that Sikhs do not especially care for African Americans. I hear the prejudice is pretty strong. I have been told that that they consider blacks to be a “weak race’. they’re just raised that way, I guess.

if they cant manage to make their way to the DMV in the many months between now and the next election, how do they expect to make it to the poles on election day. Nearly every person in this state that falls under the “too poor for transportation” classification at the same time qualifies for free or heavily subsidized public transportation.

cash, read “Gandhi and Churchill”. It explores both men from their youth until they butted heads over India. When Gandhi was a young lawyer living in South Africa, he was very pointed on his opinion of the “natives”. Being he is from a country with a caste system he obviously has opinions on many people.

Boy oh Boy!!! The Daily Show and The Colbert Report would have a field day with Gov Haley promising to drive people herself to the DMV. Imagine what would happen if they showed up at the Gov’s mansion with a large number TEA party hillbillies. If you have ever watched these two shows, you know how funny they are with political issues as described in the above article.

    To Observer:

I’m not sure what “waste of resources” is being referred to. Supermarkets don’t need additional resources to ask for ID when selling alcohol. Pharmacies don’t need additional resources to ask for ID when selling prescription narcotics. This is all a red herring.

I understand why the Democrats oppose voter ID, but I don’t understand why everyone else does. Requiring citizens to get an ID is routine and is a profit to the DMV, not a cost. The ability to prove one’s identity can be of significant value under certain circumstances, so it would require circular logic to call it a violation of civil liberties.

The bottom line is that most citizens already accept the reasoning for, and responsibility of, securing a personal ID and presenting it for activities where there is an essential and legitimate need.

Fair and honest elections would certainly fall into that category.

They call anything “talking points” when it professes a logical, reasoned thought process.

Even this moronic article implies that somehow voter ID laws are discriminatory only against minorities. It’s funny; I did not see anything in the law itself that would make it applicable only toward minorities.

Any moron can go out and secure a valid identification card. The idea that somehow this is an imposition on somebody is about the most idiotic thing that I have ever heard. Oh well, logical thoughts are unknown to liberal idiots.

Some people (maybe Mr. Bob?) just are not getting the point. This man needs the Governor to keep ALL of her promise: a) a ride to DMV, and b) help getting the picture ID. To get a picture ID from DMV, you must have a birth certificate. Some people do not have a birth certificate because they were born at home and their parents never registered their birth. That happened in cases where the parents were too poor and/or uneducated enough to go to a hospital, or go register births. Apparently these people without birth certificates were able to serve in the military and fight for our freedoms, including our freedom to vote.

Now these unfortunate people need to get a picture ID from DMV in order to vote, but they need a birth certificate to get the ID. I have read that to get a birth certificate you must have a picture ID – Catch 22. Governor Haley, you said you would help him. Why don’t you do it?

Bubba Joe, I don’t think you really meant your mean spirited comment – I am hoping you were just trying to make a point with satire.

Oh Brother! – Hey, I took Bubba as being satirical. In Nikki’s mind, who cares who they are, it’s not like she meant anything she said. The media allows her to talk out her ass with no consequences. I hope Harpootlian harps on Haley’s promise DAILY, until she personally picks up Robert Tucker and helps him get the ID.

“Now these unfortunate people need to get a picture ID from DMV in order to vote, but they need a birth certificate to get the ID.”

And if these unfortunate people needed an ID to claim the grand prize in some contest, or collect an inheritance from some long, lost relative, you can bet that neither a birth certificate nor anything else would prevent them from getting whatever credential they needed.

What is an elderly minority citizen without a birth certificate to do? Not every rural kid received a birth certifiable way back before hospitals with rules, regulations and paperwork became the typical place to give birth. Will they be able to use the tattered old family bible that record every birth & death in a family for generations? Is a red dot clerk going to card a 76 year old customer? Check this article & video clip out: http://www.rob-servations.com/1/post/2011/07/voter-id-at-the-dmv.html. A few years ago my 18 year old needed to get a copy of his birth certificate for DMV purposes. He needed a photo id to get the cert. I was able to get his cert by being his father and having a photo id. It is a hassle no matter which way you look at it. Give me a break people. This is nothing but Jim Crow. Hopefully the Supreme Court will declare this voter photo id unconstitutional.

Several scientific discoveries illustrate why humans cannot be subdivided into races and how there isn’t a single characteristic, trait – or even one gene – that can be used to distinguish all members of one race from all members of another. So, really, it is based on actual skin color and origin. By the time he died, Michael Jackson was white, origin Africa. So he was a white African.
