University of South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus has been arrested in Greenville, S.C. for “nuisance conduct.”
Details of the incident leading to his arrest were not immediately available – and a University spokesman did not respond to our initial request for comment. According to FITS correspondent Evan Wages, Mangus was charged early Tuesday and a temporary bond was set the same day.
Sources tell FITS that the Gamecock assistant coach was intoxicated at the time of the incident and may have been verbally abusive to a police officer prior to his arrest. According to WLTX TV 19 (CBS – Columbia, S.C.), Greenville police are alleging that Mangus was observed “urinating on the street” prior to his arrest.
Wow … can’t wait to read this incident report.
Mangus’ mug shot first appeared on a Clemson University message board Tuesday morning.
Mangus – who is also one of USC’s top recruiters – helped quarterback Stephen Garcia have his best season as a Gamecock in 2010. Garcia threw for 3,059 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and had a 148.7 quarterback rating – teaming up with standout wide receiver Alshon Jeffery to provide an effective aerial complement to the bruising ground game of Marcus Lattimore.
In addition to completing 64.2 percent of his passes (the third-best mark in school history), Garcia also rushed for 222 yards and six touchdowns.
Of course Garcia has had plenty of off-field problems … and it certainly doesn’t inspire confidence that his coach now finds himself embroiled in an off-field scandal.
Mangus was a quarterback at the University of Florida from 1988-91 – including two years under head coach Steve Spurrier. After graduating in 1992, Mangus remained at Florida as a graduate assistant and assistant offensive line coach. The Gators won two SEC titles (1993 and 1994) and made three bowl appearances during that stretch.
Reunited with Spurrier in Columbia, Mangus has landed top recruits like four star players Damiere Byrd and Sheldon Royster, as well as notable three star prospects like Kyle Harris, Tanner McEvoy and Brendan Nosovitch.
Hired in January 2009, Mangus is entering his third season with the Gamecocks. Prior to his tenure at South Carolina, he was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State and the head coach at Delaware Valley.
NOTE: FITS’ correspondent Evan Wages contributed to this report.
UPDATE: The University of South Carolina has suspended Mangus indefinitely as a result of this incident, according to an official release from the school.
“G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved,” Spurrier said in a statement. “We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly.”
UPDATE II: Mangus has issued an apology for his actions.
“Last night I acted irresponsibly and I deeply regret my actions,” he said in a statement. “I take full responsibility. I would like to publicly apologize to Coach Spurrier, Eric Hyman, the entire team, and everyone associated with the University of South Carolina.”

This could work out really well for USC. Maybe Garcia and Mangus can carpool to AA meetings this fall.
By marshall July 26, 2011 at 10:08 am
Mangus “took one for the team”. He distracted the police so that Garcia could run away.
By Gamecock alum July 26, 2011 at 10:11 am
EVERYONE associated w/Gamecock Football needs to be extra careful, people will be trying to take them down.
By JoeSchmoe July 26, 2011 at 10:15 am
Yes, I am sure GA was targeted.
By Steve V July 26, 2011 at 10:19 am
If “nuisance conduct” means trying to grow an ugly little mustache….he is guilty as hell.

It’s pretty well-known that Gamecock coaches are targets of law enforcement up here. After all, they have to have something to do since they can’t arrest Clemson football players, even when those players beat the living shit out of their ho’s!
By JoeSchmoe July 26, 2011 at 10:47 am
Yes, all those coot coach arrests in Greenville proves your theory…..
By rick July 26, 2011 at 10:49 am
evidently he was playing with his wanker as it was full and then became belligerent with the officer that confronted him. Can you say sex offender? The sad thing is this will get swept under the rug by Spurrier and USC.
By marshall July 26, 2011 at 10:49 am
Here’s the important question: Does Grain Alcohol Magnus’s stay in the Greenville jail count as an official recruiting visit?
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 10:49 am
Little boys still at play using my screen name. Toyota the Jap no doubt. As I have previously said, he is chicken shit.

Ace gamecock recruiter in the county jail? I smell
a banner 2012 class.

Bet all you taters will have a field day with this one..lol
By JoeSchmoe July 26, 2011 at 11:00 am
Pissing in public could have gotten him an indecent exposure charge and sex offender registration. Seems like GA got LUCKY.
By Bubba Joe July 26, 2011 at 11:06 am
Well gol’dang, a man can’t even pee in the streets anymore. What is this world coming to?
By JoeSchmoe July 26, 2011 at 11:12 am
At least GA did learn something from his mentor…

I’d love to know the background of the arresting officers…
The USC-PD was infested w/ Paw-Waving cretins until Dr. Floyd outed them…
Seems like all FITS Scoops are from law enforcement, yet he never questions the soucres allegiances…
By The Grateful Cock July 26, 2011 at 11:26 am
Seems like just when the Garcia stuff was dying down this pops up. Can we ever quit shooting ourselves in (or pissing on) the foot?
By Bubba Joe July 26, 2011 at 11:34 am
BigT – Are you that paranoid that you think that every cop asks or is concerned with who a suspect roots for before arresting them? Are you not aware that this idiot was drunk and peeing in public? I know Gamecock fans are idiots, but I didn’t think that it was this bad.
By norman July 26, 2011 at 11:37 am
Just when you thought the chicken curse had checked out of the roost a familiar rooster shows up having to take a leak. Nothing like a Gamecock drama with Steve & Hyman passing the ball.
By V-n-MTP July 26, 2011 at 11:52 am
Once again, Big T cements his status as the biggest USC homer/fluffer on the internet. The guy was pissing in a freaking public alley and was too drunk to stand/walk correctly.
I seriously doubt the rank and file members of the Greenville Police Department could pick GA Mangus out of a lineup. Hell, from the looks of him; he looks like a guy that should be mowing my lawn.
By Trey July 26, 2011 at 11:59 am
It’s pretty obvious to me that he was just up there in Greenville marking his territory. It is clear that even that part of the state does not belong to Clemson any more.
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 12:26 pm
When I was making love to President Barker last weekend, he told me that he would urge all Upstate law enforcement to arrest anyone associated with the state’s flagship university if he thought it would help inflate Clemson’s faltering US News rankings. I didn’t reply, but instead rambled about little boys.
By semi July 26, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Blame Clemson! Conspiracy! Blame the Greenville Police! He did nothing wrong! This was in efforts to boost Clemson’s rankings!
Get real. Too bad he didn’t learn a lesson (or 5) from the QB he coaches.
By orangeblood July 26, 2011 at 12:51 pm
It’s a good thing the Old Ball Coach has his bail bondsman on speed dial.
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 1:01 pm
This arrest doesn’t matter. In all likelihood, we are still fucked this season.
By Sarah Sez July 26, 2011 at 1:03 pm
Wow. Check out Big T’s spin on this one. Idiot, idiot, idiot.
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 1:05 pm
Little boys continue to play their little games and hide behind fake names as they are chicken shit. But why should I be surprised? I don’t need to besmirch USCe. They do a fine job themselves.

Who cares? I have pissed in far more worse places with people watching. Elevators, doors, streets of Greenville (not far from where Mangus was arrested), parking lots, on cars, in cars. When you gotta go you gotta go!

I heard the Greenville police officer is Eric Hyman’s wife.
By rick July 26, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Apparently he was still drunk at 9:00 when he was to go before a judge. Gamecock fans now investigating where the judge went to college and whether he is a Clemson guy.
What if this were a professor instead of a coach? Or a high school coach or teacher?
1. would not be in the news to this degree
2. the person in question would have already been fired
By Russ July 26, 2011 at 2:54 pm
Like Father, like son! Excuse me, like coach, like QB! That’s Hilarious!
For those Lamecocks blaming the Greenville Police, he’s lucky they didn’t slap him with indecent exposure and consequently making him register as a sex offender!
By BigT July 26, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Mangus can outdrink Garcia anyday! He’s a party animal. Can stephen hook him up with a couple of his hot lady friends?
By Not fair July 26, 2011 at 3:34 pm

bigT actually thinks someone could recognize Mangus and set him up? hell, his description would read like every other bandwagon redneck, sidewalk fan that usc has thousands of….nice nutduster GA
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 4:02 pm
Mangus is lucky he didn’t get slapped? You mean like Clemson players slap around women?
By Turner July 26, 2011 at 4:05 pm
Boy, is that the worse thing that’s happened in the “up-state”???
* Throwing girlfriend down stairs…
* Killing someone on the lake…
* Hitting girlfriend over head with curtain rod…
* Etc; etc; etc………
Cops are really on-the-ball up there !!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Bubba Joe July 26, 2011 at 4:08 pm
Turner, how about that coach that dropped dead of a heart attack while nailing a cheerleader and had his naked body dragged back in the trunk of a car to his shower stall. Oh wait, that was USC and not Clemson.
By Bubba Joe July 26, 2011 at 4:09 pm
The man is 42 years old, people are talking like he’s 21 years old and drunk for the first time.
By Kronecker July 26, 2011 at 4:15 pm
While I know that posting on the same page as BigT reflects poorly on me, rumor has it that Mangus peed facing the street!
By bud man July 26, 2011 at 4:26 pm
If he would take advice from his protegee’, Car-keyer, err Garcia, he would have hidden behind a dumpster until the cops shone a light on him…
Six years in and the old ball sack is one Budweiser away from having no QB at all. And apparently, one Budweiser away from having no QB coach at all….
Pitiful…. Get that recorded rooster crow ready boys.
By Gamecock Steve July 26, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Lucky for us his suspension will be just like Garcia’s suspension. Mangus will be out for a few days or weeks when it does not matter and then back on the team. Does he get 6 strikes like Garcia? Maybe coaches get more than players. Maybe Mangus has been instructing Garcia on how to act off the field too, only pee on the bushes when no one is looking.
By Kimberly hamilton July 26, 2011 at 4:42 pm
I would prefer him to pee in public than send his girlfriend to the ER for stictches..oops
By CNSYD July 26, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Kimberly, with all due respect, the bitch lied. Don’t they always after they claim to be “beaten” in order to put their man over a barrel so he’ll have to buy them some new bling to stay out of jail? That was the deal with McDaniel. She let him off the hook in exchange for Clemson paying her medical bills and a cut of McDaniel’s NFL paycheck. With the NFL strike over, her payday might be coming soon although McDaniel’s reputation for evil resulted in his becoming an undrafted free agent.
I LOVE LITTLE BOYS!
By smackatee July 26, 2011 at 5:22 pm
is there anything more meaningless than an “indefinite suspension” by the USC Athletic Dept? such a suspension is, in effect, a deadbolt lock that they will very soon be reinstated.
By Bob The Builder July 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm
They knew he was a Carolina coach on sight because he was standing when taking a pee. A Clemson coach would have been squatting.
