The University of Tennessee is reportedly targeting University of South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman to fill the same post in Knoxville, a columnist at The (Nashville) Tennessean is reporting.

From the story:

While current athletics director Steve Orsini of SMU has been mentioned prominently in some reports, it is believed that there is a bigger name on UT’s list. And key members of UT’s search committee have expressed optimism that an agreement with this person will be struck in the next couple of weeks.

The target could be Eric Hyman of South Carolina. And while I’m not a big fan of hiring within the conference, Hyman is well respected around the SEC. Plus, he knows the turf.

A spokesman for the USC athletics department was not immediately available for comment regarding the report, which was picked up by USA Today, among other outlets.

Tennessee nearly hired Georgia Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich earlier this month – but then the NCAA cited him in connection with violations that stripped the Yellow Jackets of their 2009 ACC Championship. Given Tennessee’s ongoing troubles with the NCAA, that nixed the deal.

Under Hyman’s tenure, USC has won back-t0-back national titles in baseball and the school’s first-ever SEC Eastern Division championship in football. However, the basketball program is in the toilet and Hyman has ruffled feathers with his treatment of certain athletics department personnel and star players.
