S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s most enamored online supporter is coming to South Carolina this summer for an event starring the Palmetto state’s new chief executive herself.
RedState.com’s Erick Erickson – who emerged during the 2010 campaign as Haley’s most impassioned defender – is bringing his annual meeting of self-important political types to Charleston, S.C.
“From August 12th to August 14th, please join Governor Nikki Haley and RedState.com for the 2011 RedState Gathering in Charleston, South Carolina,” Erickson’s website announced on Valentine’s Day. “We’ll have plenty of speakers, plenty of fun, and embrace the rich southern hospitality the low country is known for.”
While we’re glad to have Erickson visiting our lovely Lowcountry (capitalized, one word), his choice of South Carolina is a bit surprising – particularly if building Haley’s 2012 profile is his objective.
After all, Haley fared poorly compared to other Southern governors during the most recently concluded election cycle. She also had the smallest victory margin of any Republican on our statewide ballot.
In fact, here’s how Haley’s winning percentage stacked up against other victorious Southern governors …
Alabama – Robert Bentley (58 percent)
Georgia – Nathan Deal (53 percent)
Oklahoma – Mary Fallin (60 percent)
South Carolina – Nikki Haley (51.3 percent)
Tennessee – Bill Haslam (65 percent)
Texas – Rick Perry (55 percent)
Virginia (2009) – Bob McDonnell (59 percent)
Oh well … Charleston will be happy to take his money.
Who knows, maybe the local Republicans will show him a good time.
