Auburn Favored By Five

Top-ranked Auburn (12-0, 8-0 SEC) will enter Saturday’s SEC Championship game in Atlanta as five-point favorites over the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, who are appearing in their first-ever SEC title game.

That point spread is smaller than some were expecting … but it’s twice what the Tigers got from odds makers earlier this year when they played the Gamecocks at Jordan-Hare stadium. Auburn won that game 35-27.

Obviously, Auburn would instantly go from favorite to underdog if quarterback Cam Newton was ruled ineligible to play – although that seems unlikely to happen at this point despite the flood of unsavory allegations leveled against the Heisman Trophy hopeful.

If the Tigers beat the Gamecocks, they will play for the national championship on January 10, 2011 in Glendale, Arizona.

If the Gamecocks win, they will head to New Orleans to play in the Sugar Bowl – which would be their first-ever appearance in a BCS bowl game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EST Saturday. The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
