Next to The Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream, our favorite album of the 1990s was Gentleman by The Afghan Whigs – one of the best bands you’ve probably never heard of.
Led by anti-grunger Greg Dulli – who we’ve described in the past as a “displaced, oversexed Blues Brother” – this Cincinnati-based band refused to get lumped into the “feedback and flannel” crowd. Instead, they stuck to their lounge singer seediness and released three of the decade’s most underrated major label rock albums – Gentleman, Black Love and 1965.
