Gamecocks Ranked

The University of South Carolina football team has cracked the national rankings, earning the No. 25 spot in the USA Today-Coaches poll, the No. 24 spot in the Associated Press poll and the No. 23 spot in the inaugural ESPN Power Rankings.

The Gamecocks – who were unranked heading into the 2010 season – gained a measure of respect with a nationally-televised 41-13 shellacking of Southern Mississippi last Thursday. Of course they’ll put that newly-found respect on the line Saturday in another nationally-televised tilt against SEC East rival Georgia (No. 22 AP/ 19 USA Today/ 18 ESPN).

Oddsmakers have installed USC as an early 2-point favorite over the Bulldogs, who have won seven of their last eight over the Gamecocks – and four straight at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

As it has been for years, the SEC is the class of college football. Including defending national champion Alabama (a unanimous No. 1), the SEC boasts seven teams in all three polls – easily outdistancing rival conferences like the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. That’s good news and bad news for South Carolina, which has four of those seven ranked teams on its 2010 schedule.

Given its inability to compete in the SEC, the polls have been unkind to USC as its recent seasons have progressed.

Last year, the Gamecocks peaked at No. 21 before embarking on yet another late season skid. In 2007, South Carolina was ranked No. 6 in the nation before losing its final five games of the year.

Here are all three “Week One” polls …

    Bottom line….better than I thought.

Plus….multiple Rbs……Garcia Ok with himself…..very large WR’s. OL Coach has made a difference.

Can not comment on defence as Southern Miss came in touted better than they performed…so we might have a D….but I am going to hold until after UGA game.

Georgia has a new AD….and that is the most important recruit they could have gotten…..he is already turning many things around in a lot of sports……this is the year to get them because now that the douche of an old AD is gone and very soon the President will follow…..UGA will return as a power.

USC 24 14 with USC getting ten unanswered points in the 4th…..stadium sober but rocking.

Ridiculous that UNC falls out of the polls after nearly beating LSU while missing half of their starters.

If a Georgia fan and a Gamecock fan each fell off the top row of Williams-Brice at the same time, which would hit the ground first? The Georgia fan, of course. He’d have to stop mid-fall to spraypaint “How ’bout them Dawgs!” on the way down. What an annoying group of fans. I don’t think they’ll be very loud leaving the Brice this year.
