In case this hasn’t been made abundantly clear on numerous occasions, we cannot stand S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell. He’s a tax-and-spend liberal posing as a Republican, and he’s done more to hurt Palmetto taxpayers over the last two decades than any other state leader save Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman (the “Godfather of Pork”).

More recently, Harrell has been one of the primary authors of the government-run “Innovista” disaster – which has cost taxpayers more than $150 million (with nothing to show for it but empty buildings and emptier promises). In fact Harrell is the preeminent legislative advocate for an even broader command economic approach (symbolized by Innovista) that continues to expand bureaucracies while suppressing real job growth in South Carolina – a corrupt system of special interest spoils that rewards connected corporations while sticking it to the small businesses that are responsible for real job growth in the Palmetto State.

Having said all of that (and trust us, we could go on and on if we needed to …), it has recently come to our attention via multiple sources that Harrell’s father – former Highway Commissioner Robert W. Harrell, Sr. – has fallen gravely ill. In fact, Harrell recently missed an annual GOP Caucus retreat to be at his father’s side.

We certainly hope that whatever you think of Harrell you would join us in keeping him and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this family illness.

Naturally we remain his sworn ideological and political enemy, but in situations like this even sworn enemies deserve everyone’s consideration.

Accordingly, we wish the Harrell family the best …

UPDATE: We’ve just been informed that Robert W. Harrell, Sr. has passed away. Once again, our thoughts and prayers go out to Speaker Harrell and his family.
