U.S. Rep. John Spratt is worth an estimated $8 million – good enough to rank 34th among 535 Washington, D.C. lawmakers. That’s according to a list of the “50 Wealthiest” legislators released this week by The Hill, a newspaper which covers the U.S. Congress.
“Spratt made moves to reduce his debt in 2009, boosting his portfolio by almost $1 million,” the publication noted (click here to read the full report).
Well, well, well … if only the powerful House budget chairman had shown the same responsibility with the public’s money, right?
Maybe then Washington wouldn’t have spent an estimated $4.7 trillion that it doesn’t have since Spratt became budget chairman in 2007.
Topping the list with a net worth of $188.6 million is former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi clocked in at No. 12 with a net worth of $21.7 million – a $9 million increase from the previous year.
All told, the “50 Wealthiest” lawmakers were worth $1.4 billion in 2009 – an increase of $85.1 million from the previous year.

More plantation mentally. Pure and simple.

More useless reporting by FITS. Maybe we should get an article on how Mulvaney sends his children to private school in Charlotte, since schools in the 5th District apparently arent good enough for him. Great example for a man wanting to represent that area.

Just because someone is running for US House doens’t mean their kids should be in public school. The public schools suck in this state. Mulvaney wants what is best for his kids. I applaude him for not forcing them into a public school that can’t educate them and would likely only rot their brain cells. If the public schools were worth a damn I’m sure his kids would attend them. If I could afford it I would send my kids anywhere they could get something better than “minimally adequate” education.

The schools in Fort Mill are ranked in some ways nationally. Best in the state and doing a good job.
And you know what? They are in the Fifth Congressional District. He does not have to go outside the state, let alone his district, to educate his children.
If true, this question is bothersome.

all of em need to be kicked out of office. they got rich off of our backs, on purpose, with malice , in my opinion.
mulvaney should be ashamed if his kids go to school out of state, asking the citizens of the state to pay his way on the ride to getting rich.
fine, fine examples ( does anyone else hear Andy Griffith saying that?)

So, John Spratt is worth eight million dollars?
I’m just wondering how much of that has been accumulated since he has been in Congress?
Not accusing him of anything. But, complaining about where Mulvaney sends his kids to school does not prove anything, either.
Listen, Spratt’s done, you can stick a fork in him and no amount of complaining about Mulvaney’s personal life is going to change the out come of the election.
Spratt lost touch with the people, went too far left, and thought we would forget come election time. Now he is going to pay the price.
Don’t know what Andy Griffith would say. But I do know what Gomer would say; “Hey John, Surprise!! Surprise!!”

This discussion about Mick’s kids going to school in NC is not about whether he is right or wrong for doing it. It is about HIS and HIS families personal choice and making sure that he is doing all he can to give them the best education possible. I find zero fault in that. I would also do the same dang thing. In fact, Charlotte has three of the top 100 rated High Schools in America. If they went there and he payed a fee to do so, then what business is it of yours? Also, Mick lives in Lancaster County and his kids would not be eligible to go to York 4 (Ft. Mill)schools.
I hope your equally berating of the President for sending his kids to a private school in DC. Or do you give him a pass on that? Lets not be hypocritical now.
By BadNewsMulvaney September 1, 2010 at 3:11 pm
Spratt’s independently wealthy and always has been. Called Spratt Savings & Loans and the Bank of Fort Mill. The idea that Mulvaney can represent the entire 5th District by only understanding IndianLand and Lancaster is absurd.
By Susan2006 September 1, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Mulvaney’s kids go to Catholic school.
I guess this will make the third election where the Democrats try to make his education choice…and his religion .. an “issue.”
I wonder how Shaheen (also Catholic) feels about it.
By Susan2006 September 1, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Oh…and didn’t Spratt’s kids go to private school in DC?
Don’t hold your breath for the outrage over that.
By BadNewsMulvaney September 1, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Susan2006, I couldnt give a shit about the man’s religion. His faith is between him and his God. What I do worry about is a man how a man who has no idea about rural life expects to represent congressional district that is predominantly rural. I want to know what his plan are to represent our district. He has yet to put any agenda out there for how he plans to fight for our veterans, fight for Shaw AFB, fight for farmers, fight for the unemployed, or fight for anything. All he has said over and over is “No”. He has no real record to show that he will be an effective statesman, because he hasnt stayed a full term in any elected office. You cant campaign forever. You actually have to legislate.

Mulvaney will be OK in dealing with the constituents in the 5th CD.
He just enrolled himself in the AlGore “I will fight for you.” training school and massage parlor.
His handlers are now teaching him how to say “yes,” when appropriate. Spratt could have used some of the saying “no” when it came to dealing with Pelosi and Obama. Saying “yes” to them has cost him more than he ever expected.
He also took a car trip outside IndianLand and Lancaster and explored that brave new world he will be representing early next year.
Mulvaney is a nice guy, he will help Spratt find his way to the unemployment office next year.

“He has yet to put any agenda out there for how he plans to fight for our veterans, fight for Shaw AFB, fight for farmers, fight for the unemployed, or fight for anything.”
There appears to be no plan. His stand against the power of the purse (because of the absurd belief that all earmarks are evil as opposed to some being misused) ensures he can’t have personal input to tax dollars coming back to the district. Spratt has done a superb job for the military (the Air Force Association honored him for it recently), for Shaw AFB, and for Sumter County.
His military earmarks are Proveably Not Porkulent.
His opponents are so openly dishonest about these issues that it bears consideration of what ELSE they will lie about.
The Republicans could have avoided this problem by fielding a better candidate, but they’ll throw anything they can get into the race because what matters is the national agenda. They don’t give a flying fuck about what happens in SC after the election.
By neumonvonstubon September 1, 2010 at 8:08 pm
Funny how the media associate the Republicans with “deep pockets.”
Actually, Democrats are the rich ones.
In fact, a majority of the millionaires in Congress are Democrats.
Repblicans represent the Middle Class.
The Democrat Party is full of rich elitists who exploit the votes of the poor and suck the blood from the middle class.
By /b/ September 1, 2010 at 9:55 pm
BOTH parties are full of elitists. They duke it out using voters as the stupid cattle they are:
