Wave Building

Republicans have opened up a 10-point lead over Democrats on the national “generic ballot,” according to the latest Gallup polling.

A key measure of partisan strength, the “generic ballot” asks registered voters to identify their party preference in the upcoming election.

Gallup has tracked the measure since 1942, and Republicans have never enjoyed a double-digit lead. In fact, the GOP advantage on Gallup’s generic ballot polling was just five points during the summer of 1994 – which obviously preceded a net gain of 54 Republican seats. Democrats enjoyed a 32-point lead just before President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974 – a year in which they gained 49 seats.

“Republicans’ presumed turnout advantage, combined with their current 10-point registered-voter lead, suggests the potential for a major ‘wave’ election in which the Republicans gain a large number of seats from the Democrats and in the process take back control of the House,” Gallup pollsters note.

Obviously, there’s good news and bad news in this data.

The good news is that the nation is unambiguously rejecting the socialist agenda that President Barack Obama and his Congressional allies have been force-feeding down our throats over the last two years.

The bad news? As we’ve seen before, Republicans cannot be trusted to do much better when they’re in power … which is why they were booted from power in the first place.
