South Carolina’s public school students scored a 19.7 on the ACT exam – unchanged from last year’s results. Meanwhile, home-schooled students and students at private and parochial schools saw their test scores increase – giving South Carolina an overall increase of two-tenths of a point.
In spite of these private school gains, the Palmetto state’s ACT score still lags well behind the national average. Also, only five states (and the District of Columbia) recorded worse scores than South Carolina on the most recent results, which were released Tuesday.
The percentage of students taking the ACT increased by 2 percent this year – to 52 percent of all graduating seniors – but it’s unclear at this point whether there was a corresponding jump in minority participation.
In recent years, the number of minority students taking the ACT has declined – while white participation has increased.
Despite claims to the contrary from S.C. Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, South Carolina’s public schools have received record amounts of funding in each of the last two years. Unfortunately, that investment is clearly not paying dividends for students, parents or taxpayers.
South Carolina’s overall graduation rate remains among the worst in the nation – which is consistent with our state’s declining SAT scores. Also, South Carolina’s rural graduation rate ranks dead last in the country. Things aren’t getting better, either. South Carolina’s overall graduation rate has improved by a meager 1.5 percent over the last decade – one of the worst percentage improvements in the entire country and a figure that stands in stark contrast to the “perpetual progress” cited by Rex and other educrats.

Go ahead and say it, to(xic) willie.
According to Howie the voucher clown, the solution to all of the education problems in S.C. is the voucher scam.
Like reverse Robin Hood.
Here’s the deal. Fix the real problems facing education, and then, maybe, we will discuss Howie’s voucher scam.
You know the real problems. We have posted them on your little porn site over and over and over.
(xic) willie, our staff is sure Howie the vouch clown will continue to try to buy the SC Legislature one Representative and one Senator at a time. He’s mastered the loophole of fake corporations.
And we are sure you will keep taking his voucher scam bucks over the table or under it. That’s what makes you a voucher pimp.
But, remember the words of a Midlands’ elected official: Vouchers are dead in S.C. Particularly in this economy.

Impressive that moderation of our last post was so prompt. Working late or do you have a new process in place to moderate comments?
And, is the moderation still being done personally by xic) willie, or has he outsourced that to a soccer mom sitting over a used laptop in her kitchen while waiting to change a diaper? :)
