By FITSNews || Clemson University will finish second in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2010, according to members of the media who cover the conference. The Tigers received 16 first-place votes within their division, but no votes to win the “coveted” ACC crown.
Florida State University was picked to win the Atlantic Division, while Virginia Tech was picked to win the conference’s Coastal Division – and the ACC title.
Here’s how the voting went down (with first-place votes in parenthesis):
Atlantic Division
1. Florida State 565 (78)
2. Clemson 479 (16)
3. Boston College 389 (4)
4. NC State 283
5. Wake Forest 203
6. Maryland 139
Coastal Division
1. Virginia Tech 532 (62)
2. Miami 444 (20)
3. Georgia Tech 408 (11)
4. North Carolina 379 (5)
5. Duke 169
6. Virginia 126
ACC Championship Votes
1. Virginia Tech 50
2. Florida State 26
3. Miami 10
4. Georgia Tech 8
T5. Boston College 2
T5. North Carolina 2
A year ago, Clemson won the Atlantic Division but lost the ACC championship game to Georgia Tech. The Tigers rebounded with a bowl win over Kentucky and a Top 25 finish in the final AP poll of the season, though, and finished Dabo Swinney’s first full year as head coach with a 9-5 record.
Florida State finished last year 7-6 in head coach Bobby Bowden’s final season.
“I can see how Florida State would be picked to win the Atlantic Division,” Swinney said. “They have some great players back, led by quarterback Christian Ponder. I was very impressed with him last year and many are calling him a Heisman Trophy candidate and I can see why.”
Clemson loses its best player from 2009, running back C.J. Spiller, although quarterback Kyle Parker announced this week that he will return to the team for the 2010 season after failing to sign a contract with the Colorado Rockies, who selected the two-sport star with the 26th overall pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft.
Parker completed 205 of 369 passes for 2,526 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2009 – his first season as a starter.

2nd in the ACC = 12th in the SEC. Go Cocks!
By Analyst July 27, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Clemson’s biggest loss will be field position…with Spiller and Ford missing in the return game, their average field position may be at the 20-25 versus the 40. Makes a big difference.

Gotta love the ACC championship…where the worst team in SC meets the worst team in GA.
By CNSYD July 27, 2010 at 12:40 pm
DisgustinJustin, In 2009, USux’s SEC win/loss record was 3-5. Clemson’s win/loss record against SEC teams was 1-1. Since a .500 record beats a .375 record, where does that place USux in the SEC rankings?
By CNSYD July 27, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Brandon, gotta love the SEC championship game where USux has NEVER been.

You can not discount Dabo ….he has that something special in a young Coach and an ability to get youngsters to do “it”.
I think both USC and Clemson have good….. maybe even great seasons this year ……and meet in an epic battle for the State to enjoy.
Pressure on Steve is to have the big win like baseball and for Dabo to put the Curse back on….epic.
By Tee July 27, 2010 at 1:35 pm
Cool, they got picked to finish second in easily the WORST conference division in College Football. Pat yourselves on the back….
By OhNoNotAgain July 27, 2010 at 2:01 pm
If Dabo would accomplish all he has accomplished, without his penchant for yammering on at length about, well, everything, I’d buy that he has got it.
But because of his verbosity, I am suspicious that it may be smoke and mirrors.
If you get lucky and pull it all off, I would imagine you’d be insecure, hence the chattering. If you are the real deal, then you only need to talk to your players.
This season will tell, I think.

CNSYD – Do you really want me to play the 34-17 card? You’re begging for it! It’s all that really needs to be said about 2009. You’re embarrassed. We understand.
By really???? July 27, 2010 at 3:22 pm
D Justin, you are so stupid. I would rather be second than the perpetual whipping boy.

As an unbiased Penn State alumnus who now resides in the beautiful state of SC. I must say that in terms of college football, the ACC is the laughing stock of the nation and has been ever since “The U”‘s dynasty days have come and gone.
By Jerry July 27, 2010 at 7:36 pm
uh, USC was 2-0 against the ACC in 2009, that’s a 1.000 winning percentage. Don’t foget poor little North Carolina backed out of playing us this year because they felt that playing 2 SEC schools in the same year would be just too tough. I guess their powder blue panties would get into too much of a wad.
By CNSYD July 27, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Todd, remind me. Last time Clemson and Penn St played, how did that turn out? What happened the last time Notre Dame played Clemson? Also Ohio St.
By CNSYD July 27, 2010 at 7:52 pm
DisgustinJustin, from the bigger deck of cards that I have, there is one from 2003 that says 63-17. Want me to play that one?

No doubt you feel that the ACC should have at least one 95 year old Coach in a Press Box to call the plays?
By Eff the Banks! July 27, 2010 at 9:21 pm
Nobody asked you Todd. I’d worry about Iowa whipping your ass 2 years in a row. Big Ten…yeah…whatever.

“Don’t foget poor little North Carolina backed out of playing us this year because they felt that playing 2 SEC schools in the same year would be just too tough. I guess their powder blue panties would get into too much of a wad.”
That’s the funniest thing I have ready lately, Jerry! Yeah, North Carolina “backed out” of playing USuCk….in order to make room for LSU. And don’t worry, the only reason USuCk agreed to Carolina doing this was because an agreement was made to make up the game at Billy-Brice in the future. You’ll get your game, don’t worry. Of course, given USuCk’s traditional mediocrity and particularly coming off another pathetic bowl performance (against a team Carolina beat at their place last season), I kinda wished the Heels had left the Shamecocks on the schedule.
By Gordon July 28, 2010 at 10:24 am
CNSYD it’s called bragging rights. The fact is that your team is presently inferior and lost to the Gamecocks, now suck it up and quit being a bitch about it.
By DisgustinJustin July 28, 2010 at 11:54 am
CNSYD – You’re free to play it. YOU were the one comparing the 2009 teams though, which wasn’t smart considering, between baseball and football, we’ve had your number in the last 12 months.
By CNSYD July 28, 2010 at 11:57 am
DisgustinJustin, in your selective memory of the last 12 months, remind me how basketball turned out.
By CNSYD July 28, 2010 at 12:01 pm
Gordon, you are correct. It is bragging rights. 65-38-4 says it all. USux just needs to win the next 27 games in a row and the series will be even.
By DisgustinJustin July 28, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Call me crazy, but winning a National Championship in baseball after defeating your arch-rival in 2 straight games when they were clearly in the driver’s seat to get to the title series is just a LITTLE bit more impressive than beating us in one game of basketball. But, really, all of that is unnecessary. Let’s get back to talking about your relatively mediocre 2010 football team.
By CNSYD July 28, 2010 at 2:37 pm
DisgustinJustin, I did not realize you had powers to se the future. Have you considered buying a lottery ticket? Since not a single game has been played in the 2010 season, how do you KNOW who is “relatively mediocre” and who is not? BTW, your last post reveals why USux doesn’t understand being in a conference. You consider Clemson your arch rival and not any members of your own conference. Well I guess that is just turn about as members of your conference have no consideration for USux either.
By Jeffy July 28, 2010 at 3:37 pm
Wow…..bitter whiny bitches from cow town. It’s all about what have you done for me lately! Kitties have not been very impressive…….lately. Dude own up to it. You got beat…..alot.
By orangefire July 28, 2010 at 4:12 pm
you little bitches from cola enjoy it. you beating us in football happens about oh twice a DECADE. congrats. im sure youll be crowing again in 2016 or so.
By DisgustinJustin July 28, 2010 at 4:49 pm
CNSYD – Anybody who has grown up in South Carolina knows who our arch-rivals are. No team in our respective conferences compares to the heat of the Clemson-Carolina rivalry. I would be surprised to hear a lot of fans of either team disagree with that. But, sure, we always want to beat Georgia but not to print bumper stickers and t-shirts. That’s because its a key game in achieving a much bigger goal – winning a conference championship. Call it a rivalry if you want to.
