Payne Works To Help Teachers

By FITSNews || Kelly Payne didn’t win the race to become the next S.C. Superintendent of Education (sadly), but that’s not stopping this award-winning high school teacher from continuing her efforts to get education dollars where they’re needed most – the classroom.  In fact, this weekend Payne is joining forces with a group of local musicians to help teachers across the state afford the supplies they need for the upcoming year.

Yeah … you would think with a record $9.5 billion in taxpayer money being spent on public education last year that teachers wouldn’t have to worry about shelling out their own money for class supplies.  Unfortunately, this is South Carolina – where bureaucratic needs come first.  As a result, only half of every dollar spent on public education in this state actually makes its way to the classroom.

That’s pathetic … and our state’s education system is pathetic as a result of it.

Anyway, Payne and her friend A.J. Blues are doing their best to help teachers out – putting on the day-long concert this Saturday (July 17) at the Hard Knox Grill in Cayce, S.C.  Tickets are $5.00 for children, $10 for students and adults.  A dozen different acts from multiple musical genres will be participating, with the concert kicking off at 12:00 noon and lasting until 8:00 p.m.

Here’s a flyer …

Hope to see you there!

Oh, and props to Payne, who was fighting for teachers and students long before her Superintendent’s bid.

GOP insiders will be kicking themselves when they decided to choose people they thought were good party fundraisers over Kelly Payne when Frank Holleman continues liberal Dem control for another four years. They missed a golden opportunity to have a real fighter for education in SC for a change but chose otherwise.

It is pleasant to see at least a few on the right showing some sympathy to public school teachers, teachers who far more often are the subject of derision, contempt, and disdain in writings from the rightwing rabble on boards and in letters to the editor.

    RE: A person that knows

I completely agree. Zais doesn’t offer very much to lure any voters away from Holleman (they’re both vanilla). Whereas Payne has been in the trenches as a teacher and I think that would’ve had a huge impact with parents/grandparents/etc… she also seems to be a great person in general and seems like the type that could really shake up our education system for the better. She definitely doesn’t fit the status quo. It’s a bummer she won’t be on the ballot in November, but maybe she’ll run again in 4 years. Zais would be wise to find a spot for her in his office if he gets elected… he should probably go ahead and get her on his campaign, though.

FITS, I think you should bring up the Fairfield County School District whenever you mention less than 50% of funds going into the classroom. I know there are lots of bad ones across the state, but that district probably gets the cake considering how much money is shelled out per student (considering the drop-out rate and delayed graduation rate). With exception to one year of elementary school spent in Richland my entire Primary education was in that District. It’s a great example of what other districts don’t want to be like. I think we graduated about 25% of the kids on time that entered high school together (graduating class of 05). I wish I knew the split for who went to college (and also who graduated from college)… It’s probably few and fewer (I have numerous friends who still haven’t gotten a degree though they’ve been full time; they should’ve been out May 09). It was quite a shock to realize just how ignorant I was when I entered college… being an honor student from Fairfield means absolutely nothing in the real world.

Speaking of women who lost…..can we get an interview or some comments from Christina Jeffries……I mean she just vanished….for a big mouth like that I would have liked to see her post election comments.

She represented that she was the Tea Party candidate…the Tp still is cranking so how come shie is not coming forward to speak up and keep that flame alive in Boiling Springs.

I think a FITS sponsored panel with Mandy, Kelly, Catherine and Christina ….labeled “Women running GOP campaigns in SC and the bull shit we put up with from the idiots and good old boys in our counties” and how we would like Karen to make it better for women.

That would be great. The mere thought of more women in Cola with power causes the GOB to just shit themselves.

How is Payne qualified? She’s taught for five years and what did she do prior to her time at DFHS? In terms of awards, she’s won some rinky-dink awards..but what about teacher of the year honors ect? Yes, she’s been in the trenches for five years-but if voters want someone with teaching experience, what about finding a candidate who’s been teaching for much longer!

Sorry, dude. I can’t look at her without thinking, “She worked Richard Ekstrom’s poll and didn’t even win the Republican Primary!”

When did the days of sucking one to get to the top fall to the wayside?

Hey, It worked for Nicki Haley. Keep the faith ladies! Its not a lost art just yet.
