By FITSNews || Over the last few years, one of the more frustrating fights we’ve waged on behalf of the taxpayers of South Carolina is our ongoing battle against the Palmetto State’s so-called “Chambers of Commerce.”
Specifically, we’re referring to the S.C. Chamber of Commerce and the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce, two organizations which are veritable pillars of oxymoronisitude. Not to mention pillars of plain old moronisitude.
Why is this such a frustrating fight? Well, because most people just don’t get it. After all, these groups have very “pro-business”-sounding names and they ostensibly lobby on behalf of “pro-business” policy. Heck, the word “commerce” just screams free market, doesn’t it? And of course supporting the free market (yes, even at the expense of government) is what we’re all about here at FITS.
Yet if you bother to move past the semantics of these groups and their fluff-filled agendas what you’ll discover is that they are nothing more than big government mouthpieces lobbying for a narrow set of entrenched special interests. And not surprisingly, nearly all of the “Chamber-backed” special interests rely on taxpayer-funded largesse to stay in business, which means that these organizations rarely – if ever – encounter a tax, spending, fee or fine increase that they don’t like.
Or for that matter a tax cut that they don’t hate.
Screw fundamental fairness – these groups are all about “getting theirs” at your expense.
As expected, both of these groups are joined at the hip with the corrupt cabal of RINOcrat legislative leaders who continue to hold this state back economically (i.e. Hugh Leatherman, Glenn McConnell, Bobby Harrell and Danny Cooper). And just as South Carolina’s legislative tyranny is full of “Republicans In Name Only,” the so-called “business community” that keeps their campaign coffers full of special interest cash might as well be called “Business In Name Only.”
Their labels and their rhetoric say one thing, but their actions and (in legislators’ cases) their votes say something entirely different.
Of these groups, the S.C. Chamber of Commerce – known around the State House simply as “The Chamber” – is by far the most influential (and pernicious). It always purports to advance a “comprehensive agenda for competitiveness,” but when you take the time to examine the fine print all the group ever does is tinker around the edges of our state’s anti-competitive tax and regulatory climate and antiquated government structure.
That’s not what the taxpayers need or deserve, people.
Yet given the Chamber’s commitment to brown-nosing the RINOcrat majority, it’s not surprising that they chose to endorse U.S. Rep Gresham Barrett in this year’s GOP primary and Vincent Sheheen in this year’s Democratic primary. Both candidates are pure status quo, which is what the Chamber prefers – particularly after eight years of dealing with a governor who wouldn’t “play ball.”
Needless to say, we blasted them for both decisions (click here and here to read our rebuttals to their endorsements), but we weren’t surprised in the least. Nor were we surprised when the Chamber chose to endorse Sheheen over Haley in the general election – a move that has helped lift the scales from many people’s eyes regarding this organization’s true ideological leanings.
In fact, in the fight to hang onto the state’s purse strings, the Chamber has been upping the ante lately – doing the bidding of the “command economists” in the S.C. General Assembly with increasing frequency. For example, earlier this year the group lobbied aggressively in favor of trustees at the University of South Carolina who would support “Innovista” – Speaker Harrell’s $300 million hole in the ground that bet big (and lost) when the so-called “hydrogen economy of the future” went belly-up.
Don’t think for a minute Harrell won’t find a way to thank them – and their favored members.
The S.C. Small Business Chamber? Amazingly, this group is even more liberal than the State Chamber.
Believe it or not, the Small Business Chamber backed both “Obamacare” as well as the President’s proposed energy tax hike (no … really, they did). They’ve also been on the leading edge of the S.C. RINOcrats’ command economic scheming for years, aggressively supporting new spending and bureaucratic expansion as a way of “stimulating” government growth at the expense of the small businesses they’re supposed to be supporting. Of course that’s about what you’d expect from a group that artificially inflates its membership rolls with a bunch of liberal trial lawyers.
To her credit, S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley’s gubernatorial campaign is challenging this brood of special interest vipers.
“The state Chamber is a big fan of bailouts and corporate welfare, so it’s no surprise that they would prefer a liberal like Vincent Sheheen over a conservative like Nikki Haley,” Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told the Associated Press this week.
Wow.
Confrontational? Sure.
Accurate? Damn right it is …
And while Haley hasn’t put forward much in the way of an economic plan herself, it’s clear that she would use her veto pen to block harmful spending and costly special interest legislation, which makes her infinitely more desirable from a “commerce” standpoint than Sheheen, who would no doubt continue the spending spree that deprives families and small businesses of desperately-needed economic oxygen.
Anyway, the good news is that in the fight to expose these groups for what they are, it appears we have a new ally. Let’s hope Haley not only keeps up the heat on their hypocrisy, but also articulates a plan that starts moving us in the opposite direction before it’s too late.
UPDATE: And yes, you are all welcome to have fun with the “infinitely more desirable” thing. Can’t believe we missed that …

Sic, Nikki Haley is whispering sweet nothings for all of us right now. But, I suspect if you research the campaign promises of all the RINO’s you mentioned, you’ll likely see the same cotton candy rhetoric coming from them when they were courting votes. I’m supporting Haley’s bid, but not because I trust her intentions; I just fear a liberal’s intentions even more.
By Gina July 8, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Will, your points are right-on. The Chambers of Commerce actually represent mostly big businesses to the detriment of small businesses. Consider Blue Cross – Blue Shield of SC, which is a monopoly in this state. I will be very happy if Nikki Haley refrains from taking money from such companies.

From the article:
“mouthpieces lobbying for a narrow set of entrenched special interests”
That about sums up Nookie Nikki doesn’t it?
By Ed July 8, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Oh wait, she couldn’t be a lobbyist because she was the one they were supposed to be lobbying. I guess that just makes her “on the take.”
Funny, but it seems Nookie Nikki’s campaign strategy is to throw the word “liberal” around as many times as possible. Unfortunately in a state with the electorate that we have, that is probably all it takes. In the world of Rush and Glenn, if you say it enough, people who can’t think for themselves just eventually believe it.

FITS, I certainly appreciate a vehement, all be in not too well informed defense of your “alleged” ex-lover – but if you look at the actual memebers of the Chamber of Commerce (representing many, many small businesses, as well as some of the largest commercial movers and shakers in the state) then your point seems antithetical unless you are stating they the Chamber is voting and moving against its own interest.
As much as you may try to make the chamber members all “big government mouth pieces,” the fact of the matter is they represent (almost all of them) private businesses and private commercial interests. Your attempt to impugn them based on the normal GOP talking points is going to fall on deaf ears to anyone who actually considers the issue in an informed manner. The lesson here is not that these normal GOP backers are off point because they chose a Democrat, nor that the “normal GOP talking points” as I refered to them are inherently wrong – however, I think the real issue is that the Chamber realizes that Nikki Haley’s positions on the issues for S.C. businesses is inherently wrong.

By Walt July 8, 2010 at 6:11 pm
The insiders at the Chamber know the scoop about Mrs. Haley, just like you do, FITS…
A woman with bad enough judgment to have a one night stand with Larry Marchant, then admittedly engage in a bizarre series of late night cell phone calls with Will Folks (“working late,” my ass), park her SUV in front of his condo all night, refuse to turn over emails and phone records, and tell obvious lies to the easily duped mainstream media, is not someone the business community can count on.
Despite the spin job this website attempts to put on this latest development, by calling any Republican who has doubts about Haley a “RINO,” this vote of no confidence speaks volumes, and is a blow to Haley’s efforts to appeal to all but the Tea Partiers and the libertarian wing of the Republican Party in S.C.
She needs to do somethging fast to earn the business community’s trust, or it is going to be “My Guv’nah Vinny” come November.

ED, pretty funny that your comment “if you say it enough, people who can’t think for themselves just eventually believe it.” pretty much describes most of the people who voted for Obama. They just listened to the mainstream media kiss Obama’s ass and sing his praises long enough to actually believe it. Now we’ve got a Marxist president who has total contempt for the Constitution and is hell-bent on government take over of as many industries as possible while destroying our economy.
I wholeheartedly agree that no one thinks for themselves anymore. The fact that morons of this state voted for a candidate for Attorney General just because he’s named “Wilson”, even though he’s only been a lawyer for 7 years and can’t argue cases before the Supreme Court, is proof enough that people just don’t think. How stupid are S.C. voters? Well a family member of mine made phone calls for one of the AG candidates and the biggest comment they received was “are they a lawyer? I ain’t voting for no lawyer.” It was worthless trying to explain that the Attorney General has to be a lawyer.
I love South Carolina but this is the dumbest state in the nation. We have the most backwards and futile education system and the ultimate in good ole boy political system that is “by special interests, of special interests, for special interests.” Voters of this state, for all the complaining they do, have no one to blame but themselves.

They are also voracious when it comes to taking away the authorities of juries. They lie all the time about how juries are a threat to business, preferring government regulation. A few more reasons to vote for Vince and against Haley. Thank you for spelling this out for us. BTW, why all the good words for Haley? She did you wrong, dude. Way wrong!

And, the “other dude” that said he slept with her: that was not a one hight stand. On-going.

It may be that Wilkins was recruited to NMR&S by Dick Riley. Their fathers were long time friends. Mr. Ted Riley was Mr. Democrat, the Wilkins family became Republicans but they have remained friends and work well together. Ever since Claude Scarborough was managing partner, NMR&S has straddled both sides of the political fence because the bottom line is the bottom line and what’s good for NMR&S is good for America. I’d say that’s more likely the reason for Wilkens’ support of Steve Morrison than abandonment of political ideaology. It says nothing about Wilkens’ bona fides as a Republican. Morrison is smart and has a wit, (he was the point guard on Cazzie Russell’s college team and always said his job was to throw the ball to Russell and get out of the way) but his politics are waaay left. So that firm is firmly entrenched on both sides of the political spectrum. All of that is to say anything that comes from NMR&S isn’t about a particular ideaology, its about the firm’s bottom line.

I hope SC becomes #1 in most backward state in the US. Then at least we can say we are #1 in something.

Are Sheheen’s parents or grandparents from another country?

/// Balsak Tee Baghar is the comedian of the foul mouthed drugged out trailer trash that hangs around here ///
Shit! I SO wanted to be that. But the bad craziness going on down here on the coast sucked too much of the funny outta me.
Speaking of that bad craziness, it’s spreading now, like the oil in the Gulf. The city of North Myrtle Beach is considering whether or not to team up with THEIR Chamber of Commerce to screw everybody over just like the city of MB did with theirs.
Crony capitialism sucks. It’s not free market capitalism at all. The market does not determine the flow of wealth, the government-business relationships do. Autoritarian regimes, left, right or middle, at all levels from small town to nation-state, practice this CONTROLLED, oppressive and abusive form of capitalism, and it is an abomination.
Why is that so damned hard for so many on here to understand? I’m a Democrat and it’s as plain to me as the point on top of Jake Knotts’ head.

Ah, give it up, Buzzy, nobody gives a flying fuck about all that Glenn Beck bullshit.
By Betty Dent July 10, 2010 at 11:24 pm
God will smite you mightilly for your foul mouth, Diddy, but I agree with the sentiment. I for one am far more interested in the sordid abnormal psychological details of why this heathen “Sic” person has felt the need to so besmirched Mrs. Haley’s good name.
I know she would have nothing to do with him in that way. But oh, dear, I do so hope she really is a good Christian girl now, and not still a heathen herself.

/// Some of the local chambers are just as bad!! ///
They’re all in the same racket together. Myrtle Beach is a perfect example, with North Myrtle Beach trying to follow suit with a 1% tax for a “tourism development fund”.
National Chamber = big umbrella for this and other heinous rackets. Only reason Obama opposes them is they won’t let his pet unions and collectivist special interests, especially the SEIU, into their crony circle jerk party.
And the beat goes on …

Boz Martin, I thought I told you to stay away from the boat ramps and rest areas, go downdown to the vista and cruz pretty lips.
