By FITSNews || Laurin Manning – one of President Barack Obama’s top South Carolina staffers in 2008 and current new media director for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Vincent Sheheen – was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Hartsville, S.C. last month, sources tell FITS.
Prior to her career as a political operative, Manning was one of the state’s most influential bloggers. Her website, The Laurin Line, was one of the first new media outlets to achieve statewide notoriety prior to its discontinuation four years ago.
Widely-regarded as one of the most talented young political operatives in the state, Manning has been repeatedly referred to as “South Carolina’s best political writer” by FITS founding editor Will Folks.
Sheheen’s campaign said it was investigating the incident, which is said to have occurred on June 16. Rob Godfrey, a spokesman for GOP nominee Nikki Haley, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Developing …
UPDATE: Confirmed. Officers at the Darlington County Detention Center tell FITS that Manning was arrested on June 16 and charged with driving under the influence.

FITS:
I thought you became like the others and were blocking my posts because no one in South Carolina can handle the truth.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that you did run my response to Dead agent caper. Btw, what DOES “dead agent caper” mean? I really want to know what a dead agent caper.
But, of course there is a link between the obove story and my desire to run for South Carolina’s Attorney General as a write-in candidate:
In addition to my many unique virtues, I do NOT drink AT ALL, not even coffee. Nor will I need any advisors or speech writers or anything.
My closing argument to the jury which refused to convict me on those false harassment charges concocted by Heather Weiss, Tandy Carter, Larry Wayne Mason, and their co-conspirators was totally improvised.
And just to not keep repeating myself: here is something I did not get to post on my “announcement” for Attorney General:
I believe cock-fighting should be legalized under well-regulated conditions. And this is a principled and scientific stance.
First, as a matter of constitutional principle, people are free to do with their possessions what they please. And livestock and poultry ARE possessions. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. All that is required is that they do not use their possessions in a manner that harms other human beings and/or other human beings’ possessions.
Scientifically: Nature is red in the tooth and the claw. This means it is in cocks’ nature to fight for who literally, not figuratively, rules the roost and fertilizes the eggs before they are laid by the chicken.
So, cock-fighting is more natural than horse racing. All that is required is that the cocks be well fenced-in so they don’t go pecking at children’s eyes, just as pet dogs need to be on a leash.
Now who else in South Carolina has the moral courage to oppose the death penalty and the intellectual security to argue for a constitutional right to cock-fighting?
Give your readers and me a reason why she (I) should not be Attorney General.

As for this topic – she should volunteer to step aside until this matter is resolved. Currently she casts a bad light on the Sheheen campaign.
My bets are she will stay where she is because she will want to drag this out way past the election. Then it wont matter.

I’ve had my disagreements with Laurin over time, but I think it is disgraceful of you to bring this sort of thing up. She isn’t a public official, she’s a relatively mid-level campaign staffer. More evidence that you’re scum…
By fitsnews July 6, 2010 at 12:54 pm
We’re not judging her and frankly we hope she isn’t fired. It’s a DUI. It happens. She didn’t hurt anyone else (or herself as best we can tell) which in our opinion means she should be entitled to a second chance.
She is, however, one of the more visible members of Sheheen’s staff and he is the Democratic nominee for governor. Based on those two facts alone we stand behind our decision to publish the information.
On a personal note we think the world of Laurin and her abilities. We hope – and trust – that she bounces back quickly from this.

I used to read her blog a few years ago. It was somewhat typical of a college student out pitching for the democrats.
I detected most of the readers and comments were young college students professing the same political slant. She seemed somewhat talented and did have a unique awareness of state and national politics.
Yes, she should get a chance to put this behind her. And, anyway, it will not be highly publicized in the media outlets in SC. It is just part of the forgiveness the press offers to the democrats.
She should be more careful in the future. Working for Sheheen, the next four to five months will probably drive her close to take to more drinking binges.
Just don’t drive.

The Sheheen campaign is “investigating the incident,” huh? I understand the concept of “plausible deniability,” but is it possible that Ms. Manning did NOT immediately report her arrest to someone higher up in the campaign. If she did NOT tell her superiors in the campaign about it within hours of her release, then she should be fired. Keep her mouth shut and allowing the campaign to be caught flat-footed would have been supreme disloyalty on her part.
Hopefully, Ms. Manning told her bosses everything and they decided to support her as long as it didn’t go public. Even under this best case scenario for Ms. Manning, she has little choice but to resign pending the outcome of the case now that Mr. Folks has blown his little whistle. So, its kind of hard to take Will’s comments that he hopes and trusts that she “bounces back quickly from this.” Hell, Will, you the one that tossed her off the bridge in the first damn place.
@ Matt: I believe you are correct sir. Ms. Manning was one of several “Yuppie Democrats” who at least played footsie with a younger, up and coming Marshall Sanford back in the day. I think they just wanted to be invited to an oyster roast at the plantation or something. . .

By reasonable July 6, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Sick Willie,
People make mistakes. Some of those mistakes should be left for those people to deal with privately. It’s quite another matter if the person has chosen to run for or hold public office.
I met Laurin several years ago. Her brother is a friend of mine. She struck me as a very nice, bright young lady. If you have respect for her, as you claim, you shouldn’t capitalize on her misfortune.
Wouldn’t it be cool if someone focused on revealing the truth about issues, rather than outing the mistakes of all those involved in any way, shape or form in the world of politics?
You continue time and again to show what seem to be your true colors. This is National Enquirer…southern style. Thanks to your insatiable desire to publish every sordid detail of the lives of everyone out there, she has lost her job. Say what you will, but Sheheen had no choice once you made this public. Nice job.
Do you keep a running tally of the lives you trounce on?

Getting pulled by the police and charged for DUI is not the same as getting drunk and getting behind the wheel. No one really knows the facts surrounding her getting pulled. It does appear from the information I have seen that this particular highway patrolman was looking for people to pull for suspected DUI, as he pulled a second one just minutes later. Perhaps he was just camping outside a bar and waiting for people to leave. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Regardless, it appears she didn’t blow, so she had to be arrested. It doesn’t mean she was drunk, or impaired. My bet is that unless they have her on tape falling down or slurring her words, or driving erratically, this case gets pled down to something simple and not a DUI. And in that case, she can send Will a nice card for making her unemployed.

You should be ashamed for causing her to lose her job. Laurin did not deserve this from you. She was a campaign staffer, not a public figure, and she is innocent until proven guilty. Are you keeping score of the lives you’re ruining?
By Gary July 6, 2010 at 7:46 pm
Why would this make news?? Why should Haley’s campaign be asked to comment on something about the personal life of a staff worker of Shaheen unless it has some thing to with Shaheen?
Although I am NOT a democrat, but in this case we should not make much of it and Shaheen should not be tainted in any way with this news.
Every one makes a mistake, and If Laurin made one, we should be large hearted and understanding and sympathetic rather than publicize it for personal or political gain.
By Whippersnapper July 6, 2010 at 7:56 pm
The Sheheen campaign is showing a distinct lack of class on this. The DUI happened on June 16 but the campaign terminates her on July 6th. The Sheheen campaign found Laurin guilty NOT of DUI but of having the DUI charge become public. Sheheen deserves to go into the dustbin of SC history.

THE ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER!!!
THE DESPERATION OF SHAHEEN
Desperately trying for attention, because no one wants to talk to him, SHAHEEN is now crying and whining that national media is paying too much attention to Haley. It is hilarious that he is now running an ad “requesting Haley” to come back to SC and asking people to call her office.
Hi Shaheen, I am addressing you man: Did Haley call all these media outlets MSNBC, CNN, FOX, NEWSWEEK etc or they requested the interview??
You know the answer. Again Did Haley refuse ONE media outlet in SC for interview?? You know the answer is big NO…So why are you are misrepresenting the facts?? I know you need attention, but this is looking rather very negative on you. Do some thing dramatic to get national and international attention. How about cross dressing for a change??
THIS is from The State
>>>South Carolina Democrats are taking a shot at Republican gubernatorial nominee Nikki Haley’s new political profile, arguing Haley has “gone national.”
In a new Web ad, the S.C. Democratic Party chastises Haley for doing no local news interviews since winning the primary while finding time for MSNBC, CNN and FOX News Channel.
“Nikki’s gone national. No time left for South Carolina,” the narrator says, posting Haley’s campaign office phone number and urging residents to call. “Tell Nikki Haley it’s about South Carolina’s future, not her next cameo.”
The ad also manages to tie Haley to political mentor, Gov. Mark Sanford, saying Sanford must be lonely due to Haley’s new-found attention from the national press.

No punishment in the world would be enough for Manning.
Also, what sort of person puts other peoples’ lives at risk so that she can enjoy a few Long Island Ice Teas? As a media consultant and a “nice Southern girl,” I wonder what kind of sugary words she would have for the mother or child of anyone she could’ve killed on the road that night?

Anyone wanting to look through SubZero’s (A.K.A. Marie Faltas) storied immigration history will see that she overstayed her visa and ran afoul of immigration authorities numerous times. Marie, you flatter yourself too much by thinking that Sic even considers you or your posts. You are just a litigious old hack who seeks to blame everyone and everything for your misery. The saddest moment in your obviously pathetic life will come when you recognize yourself as the sole cause for all your unhappiness. Everyone (neighbors, police, judges, INS agents, former bosses, City Council, etc.) is out to get you. You have terrorized our court system for over two decades. Your pettiness is most easily demonstrated by the record of your arrest for shoplifting a cheap folder from Walmart. You are a burden to your neighbors, the police, businesses, and tax payers in general. I’ve got an idea for you. Get mental help soon.

OK let’s review the guidelines.
1. Be polite.
2. Only crack the window.
3. Never look at the flashlight or breathe in it’s direction.
4. Be polite.
5. Never ever ever take a field sobriety test. It was designed to be failed.
6. Be polite.
7. Do not allow LE to touch the interior of your vehicle without a consent to search or warrant.
8. Never take a breathalyzer.
9. Never take a blood test.
10. Be polite. Save arguments for courtroom.
Remember only you can provide the evidence needed for your prosecution. Deny LE as much evidence as possible and then argue reason for stop in court. Do your part and help your lawyer do theirs.
By Old Bike Dude July 7, 2010 at 9:17 am
Correction: Do take the breathalyzer but refuse blood test unless you can get a second sample.
Have your papers handy, give only yes and no answers and lock your car when you get out.
Enjoy your weekend.

While I may not agree with all of her political ideals, Laurin is a good person. Those of you spouting that you’re glad she didn’t kill anyone have no basis–you have no clue what she did or did not have to drink. Of course, I am sure you are all perfect, especially if you come to this site looking for actual news.
By Ed July 7, 2010 at 12:30 pm
Do NOT take the breathalyzer. If you weren’t swerving all over the road or driving erratically, then they have absolutely no evidence to convict you, provided you do everything Old Bike Dude just described. The charges go away or reduced to an illegal lane change, a missing tail light, etc.
By B.L. July 7, 2010 at 3:10 pm
She is right in one thing as anyone following the Ayana Jones story in Detroit is aware, every raid by law enforcement inherently creates a danger to human lives. The raids of cockfighting events creates a danger to rural US Citizens lives to defend a chicken that will then be given to the Humane Society and they will kill the chicken to keep the gamefowl owner from profitting so the HS can get paid for killing it.
The gamefowl owner is simply breeding and raising gamecocks in an effort to feed their families and make a living in rural America and urban people in their misguided and arrogant ignorance of the subject are placing a higher value on a chicken than they do the life of their rural neighbors.
They are supporting depriving the rural Americans of their rights, freedoms, culture, heritage, animal agriculture industry, pursuit of happiness, liberty and if necessary even their lives to force their opinion onto rural Americans over a chicken.
By B.L. July 7, 2010 at 3:37 pm
Just as a BETA fish fights to the death with another male Beta Fish so does the gamecock.
You can not drug, force or train a Beta fish to fight another Beta fish just as you can not drug, force or train a gamecock to do so. Both of these species fight because of the natural genetic traits that God placed into these two species.
The cockfighters have simply built a method of harvest around the natural genetic traits of the gamecock. Urban people have listen to the lies and misrepresentations of the HSUS spewed forth in the media for 60 years and do not know the truth of this industry that has been used by the rural Americans to feed their families and suppliment their incomes since before America became America.
Gamefowl have been bred and raised to be harvested by this method of harvest (cockfighting) for more than 3000 years.
Angus cattle have been a recognized breed for less than 300 years but they can not be harvested by any other method that that which they were bred for by the cattle rancher trying to make a living, put clothes on his children and food on his table. Does that make the cattle rancher a bad person or an animal torturer? Of course not.
The same holds true of the gamefowl owner.
Would you support the equivalent law against t he cattle rancher trying to earn a living in rural America. Would you support law enforcement officers making raids anmd kicking in his their doors. ripping their families apart, terrorizing them in their own homes, endangering thier lives and possibly even killing them over the way they make a living and feed their families or the way they harvest their cattle?
It it is unjust to do this to the cattle rancher trying to feed his family it is also unjust to do it to the gamefowl owner trying to feed his family in a rural industry and economy the urban majority has only the information from the Humane Society of the United States and their leaders, who have openly stated their goal is the abolishment of all animal agriculture and lies, misrepresentations and anything else are all justified to bring about that goal.
Peter Singer the often referred to as the “father of the animal rights movement” in the 1960′s wrote the book “Animal Nation” has openly stated that their goal is legalized bestiality and to reach that goal the animal rights movement must do away with the Judeo Christian foundations of America.
Every urban person should really try to find out exactly who and what you support when you side with the animal rights movement and their cause before you sign on to help push their political agenda.

B.L.:
I agree with most of what you said, except the last part.
I don’t know if bestiality is the purpose of the Humane Society of the U.S. But I DO know that raids conducted by extreme “animal rights” groups on medical labs using animals to advance science are a very dangerous thing.
As usual, every dangerous idea (like “stop using animals for science”) starts by picking an extreme (like cock fighting) and demonizing it.
I really want to run for AG. Please help!

The only thing that kept me from throwing my computer through the nearest window in frustration–was SubZeroIQ–add the subsequent flirting between Sub and Fred–otherwise–I would have some serious issues with you other morons–making me destroy my computer and my sanity!!! Lets get real here people–in other parts of the country–DRUNK DRIVING is not DISMISSED as–everyone does it!!!! God–no wonder these idiots that are destroying our state are continually elected–you are all drunk when you go to vote!!!! Pay close attention—
What happened top Patty Privileged had nothing to do with Sic–he did not get her drunk–I’m relatively sure—and he did not tell her to get into the car and drive–she did that on her own!!! SHE drank alcohol—SHE drove her car—SHE GOT CAUGHT!!! The only are only 3 surefire ways NOT to get arrested for DUI
1. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE
2. If you DO drink and drive—do it in Lexington County, and PRAY like hell, if you do get pulled–it’s the Highway Patrol, and just tell them you’ve called a really powerful local criminal attorney, they will let you go. This one also works even if you kill someone!!!
3.Tell the cops you are the new Mayor of Columbia.
That’s it folks–the only SUREFIRE ways to get out of a DUI–personally–I’ll go with #1.
So–leave Sic alone–he’s just reporting the FACTS place the blame where it belongs in this one—square between the beady little eyes of Laurin Manning!!! But, luckily for her she only got caught drunk driving–apparently in SC–EVERY ONE DOES IT.
JEES!!! Thank you Flustered for being the voice of reason!!

By SubZeroIQ July 10, 2010 at 10:04 pm
Lera:
Thank you for the attention and the encouragement.
I also have something to tell the others; but you already know it.
The reason DUI is illegal and should be is not that EVERY impaired driver will injure someone. It is that THE RISK of injury becomes that much greater.
So, whatever your political opinion or socio-economic status, PLEASE never excuse a DUI with the fact that no one died IN THAT PARTICULAR CASE.
When DUI is excused, SOMEONE will die eventually, if not from vehicular homicide then from liver failure or eosophageal varices, or hemorhagic pancreatitis, or cancer of the pharynx, or many of the other diseases related to substance abuse. None of those death is pretty.
Now, do you want to know what your Columbia Police Department (CPD) does instead of calculating Steve Benjamin’s speed as he broad-sided Ms. Rubens?
Do you want to know what CPD did for one of the three officers who brutally arrest Jonathan McCoy at Five Points on 17 October 2009 then falsified their incident report under oath?
CPD used the excuse that SLED is investigated to keep that Nazi John K. Passmore on the streets and on the payroll.
Amanda Long is still there, and scheduled to testify against other arrestees. I bet the City lawyer will not let the defense question Long’s credibility.
And Van Houten? He’s been promoted to Investigator.
That tells the remaining CPD officers that lying on arrest reports is not only acceptable but will also get you promoted.
Oh! And they falsely arrested Dr. Marie Faltas and charged her with disorderly conduct for having asked them why they were arresting her and without warrant at that.
Dr. Marie Faltas was planning to attend Richland County Central Magistrate Court to testify for the public against Richard Wayne Mason for his DUI jury trial.
I bet the Solicitor throws the case. Please go watch.
Thanks and God bless.

CORRECTION! CORRECTION! CORRECTION:
The third Columbia Police Department officer of the gang of three Nazis who arrested McAllister and McCoy at Five Points on 17 October 2009 was James Heywood, not Van Houten.
That’s only the third mistake I made all year.
I don’t know if Heywood has been promoted but it would not surprise me.
