By FITSNews || South Carolina’s obesity rate edged upward this year – from 29.7 percent to 29.9 percent – according to data released on Tuesday by the Trust for America’s Health.
The Palmetto state ranks ninth nationally in terms of its percentage of obese adults – which is actually four spots better than last year’s fifth-place ranking. In 2004, South Carolina ranked 13th in the nation with a 24.5 percent obesity rate.
America’s fattest state? Mississippi, where a whopping (and we mean “whopping”) 33.8 percent of the adult population is obese. The thinnest state? Colorado, with an obesity rate of 19.1 percent.
Adult obesity rates increased in 28 states in the past year, with the only decline occurring in the District of Columbia. It’s part of a frightening (and expensive) trend, as America has seen obesity in its adult population skyrocket over the prior two decades. In 1991, not a single state had an obesity rate above 20 percent. Today? Only one state – Colorado – has an obesity rate below 20 percent.
A study released last November by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease concluded that South Carolina spends$5.3 billion a year – or $1,500 per person – fighting obesity-related ailments. On top of that, we have a totally splintered, dysfunctional health care delivery system that is rife with fraud, waste and mismanagement.
Rather than passing long-overdue reforms to address these problems, though, South Carolina’s “Republican-controlled” General Assembly has decided to just raise taxes and throw more money into the abyss …
Rep. Tracy Edge (R-Myrtle Beach) has been working on a number of different health care reform proposals that he hopes will produce some savings for taxpayers. Edge plans to unveil his health care reforms – as well as several other fiscally-conservative policy ideas – prior to the next legislative session.

It is sad how many heffers there are in this country! How am I supposed to find a hot wife if I know she’s going to grow up to be fat? At least we have the lowest obesity rate amongst children in the south…I guess.

Here’s a perfect liberal goverment cure all to obesity (fatass diease); inact a FATASS tax. Since we now have mandatory health care require everyone to get a physical once a year, those who body mass index is above their “recommended” index would have to pay additional taxes and penalities. The “logical” liberal arguement to justify the tax is that the obese are putting an additional strain on local/state/federal budgets due to risky/poor health habits. Further they are putting the economic/health/defense of this country at risk as they are not at the 100% we need all Americans to be at.
Just imagining being able to go to out and not getting stuck behind a herd of local minority water buffalos would be enough to get skinny me behind something like that!!
