Tom Davis: Beaufort’s New Kingmaker

tom davis

By FITSNews || The name of S.C. Senator Tom Davis wasn’t on the ballot in Beaufort County on Tuesday, but he was a big winner regardless.

Davis stumped hard over the last two weeks for Republican Andy Patrick, who obliterated incumbent Rep. Richard Chalk (RINO-Hilton Head) by a 70-30 percent margin in Tuesday’s Republican runoff for S.C. House District 123.

The endorsement was a bold move in a race that many political observers felt would be much closer.

Two years ago, Davis himself defeated an incumbent state lawmaker by a sizable margin.  Since then, he has quickly established himself as one of the state’s most influential lawmakers – no small feat given his proximity to scandal-ravaged Gov. Mark Sanford and the fact that he has been especially vocal in challenging some of Columbia’s most powerful politicians and special interests.

Last year, for example, Davis coined the phrase “legislative tyranny” to describe the way the S.C. General Assembly usurps control over other branches of government to the detriment of the taxpayers.

In addition to his growing clout in Columbia, Davis has become something of a rock star in his home district.

His approval ratings amongst registered voters have remained stratospheric ever since his election – even at the height of the Sanford scandal – and his voting record (Davis was one of just fifteen lawmakers to earn an “A” grade from the S.C. Club for Growth) has earned him love from independents and tea party activists alike.

Campaigning against an incumbent like Chalk – who came in first place in the GOP primary just two weeks ago – was a move fraught with political risk, but Davis pulled it off and now has a RINO scalp on his wall.

Good for him …

I see that the good senator is back to writing for FITS. Just like Nikki Haley, Mark Sanford, and even Will Folks, these people don’t care about SC and are all about self promotion, whether through lies or buzzwords (that they have zero attention following through on). With that said, Chalk was a buffoon and glad he’s gone.

Richard Chalk Delivers Leadership for Beaufort

    June 16, 2010

    House District #123 Residents

    Beaufort County, South Carolina

    Dear Friends,

We are writing this letter in support of your Representative, Richard Chalk, and to let you know about some of the major reforms and accomplishments he has delivered for Beaufort County and our State. Let us tell you about the Richard Chalk we know and serve with in the S.C. House:

Richard Chalk is a leader. We depend on his support to pass much needed reforms and advance our fiscally conservative Republican agenda. Well respected by his colleagues at the State House and community back home, he quickly gained a reputation of being a leader in the House.

Chosen to serve as a Whip for the House Republican Caucus, Richard Chalk is a key leader we rely on to fight the status quo and deliver the necessary votes on crucial issues. Whether it was the bill that saved the Heritage Golf Tournament, fighting for more equitable funding for Beaufort County Schools, cutting government waste or passing and defending the billions of dollars we return to you in tax cuts, Richard has consistently played a leading role in delivering these reforms.

Richard Chalk is an effective leader that the people of Hilton Head Island can count on.

Serving on the Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee, Richard is a strong voice on the issues that you care about. A rising star ever since gaining your trust in public office, I expect Richard’s experience and devotion to his district to greatly advance his leadership role in the House.

Richard delivers the leadership the folks of Beaufort need. On Tuesday, June 22nd, please join us in supporting Richard Chalk in the Republican Primary.

    Sincerely,

    Bobby Harrell
    Speaker of the House

    Kenny Bingham
    Republican Majority Leader

Damn Toyota that makes two things out of hundreds we have agreed on.

I heard the real “word on the street” is that Sic Willie had an inappropriate physical relationship with Davis. The unknown is which one was on top.

Davis is loved in Beaufort by all his carpetbagger friends and retirees. Birds of a feather.

Gen. Longstreet, SC doesn’t need any modern day carpetbaggers like Sanfraud, Jenny Sanfraud, Davis, Mulvaney and Ryberg coming here to try to tell us how to live, think and act. AFTER they have cleaned up all the mess in the areas that they are from, then MAYBE we will listen to them. They can get back on their white horses and ride the hell out of here.

Tom Davis had about 250 people at his rally for Andy Patrick on Saturday night — I was there. No one delivers a speech like our senator, and he had that place rocking. I’ve never heard about him wanting to run against Sen. Graham, but he would have my vote if he did.

Islander, doesn’t take much to get you excited. All hat and no cattle is what Davis is. We have one DeMint (who the rest of the Senate ignores), we don’t need two.

CNSYD, sounds like you’ve got a bad case of “Davis envy.” I’m figuring you for a sad bureaucratic hanger-on “working” in either the Blatt or Gressette buildings, probably Harrell’s, living your life vicariously through those who have the courage to get in the ring rather than watch quietly from the shadows. You sad little shitass.

Chalk won 35 percent of the vote in the primary, while Patrick and Keep split the balance (with Patrick only getting slightly more). The day after the primary, Davis endorses Patrick and campaigns hard for him the following 14 days, and Patrick ends up winning the runoff by 70 to 30. The “all hat and no cattle” guy drove a ton of votes. And Herbman, you’re right: Herbkersman might see a rerun of that movie in 2012 if he doesn’t get his act together.

I know Senator Tom Davis on a professional level only and I can say from first hand experience, he is a man of integrity and the highest of morals and values. He is not afraid of a fight and fights like a champ to the bitter end for issues he believes in. He has helped tremendously with an ongoing issue over the past two years and he has been there from beginning to present. He did so willingly and with no future political aspirations-as a matter of fact,he kept quiet, always staying behind the scenes but always offering support and guidance-expecting nothing nor asking for anything in return. He simply saw a travesty and as a result of his backing, there have been many changes as a result of this gentle yet strong man working to right a wrong. He could have taken this, smeared his name all over it and came out looking like a diamond but chose not to. No publicity for him, no money for him, nothing for him but the satisfaction of knowing that he is a wonderful, honorable man not afraid to stand up for or against what he believes in. I am not from HHI and I am not wealthy, I am just a common person like most of you. He isn’t concerned about what one has or doesn’t have. He is only concerned with justice and the people of Beaufort County whom he represents. If you don’t know the man, don’t go shooting off at the mouth. You know what they say about opinions…………..

Wexford Watcher, I don’t work in state government and never have. While you were swooning over phonies like Davis I was keeping the Soviets off your ass. You remember the Soviet Union don’t you? It was in all the papers. BTW I haven’t heard you say thank you. Also, I live at the opposite end of the state from Bobby Harrell’s district. So all you Yankee newbies who moved into SC to retire, just spend your money and STFU. Ken Burger had a dead on column in the P&C the other day about you types. If you ain’t a bin yah we don’t won’t to hear from you. Go back to Jersey or whatever other hell hole you crawled out from.

One disturbing but unavoidable characteristic of comment boards like this is that they erode your ability to have confidence in anything, or more so anyone. That is anyone who you do not know personally and pretty well. Every public person, EVERY public person, ranges from second coming to scumbag in commenters’ assessments, from divinely guided to devil’s stooge. There is not even a bell-curve middle to lean towards, it is bimodal and toward the extremes. It is not even the two-party bimodality that at least has some rationality that could be used to unsort the reality. Is there a single involved person in the public sphere upon whom there is general or at least strongly centralized agreement? Maybe on Sanford’s being a narcissistic bungler, but anyone else?

Soft Sigh from Hell, I agree with you. Seems like most bloggers have nothing but negativity to say about ALL politicians now matter who they are or what they have done. I rarely comment or “blog” but the article about Tom Davis compelled me to do so. I know this man. I say, if you can do any better, stop your blogging and run for office yourself if you think you can do a better job. That is, if you are don’t have a criminal record and are remotely intelligent which from most of what I read, most, NOT ALL, are just simple minded idiots who have nothing better than write garbage only they care about just so they can feel good about themselves and see their stupidy written on paper and in a news article. Get a life simpleman…………………..
