By FITSNews || Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots were two of our favorite bands of the nineties (heck, they’re two of our favorite bands of all-time, for that matter), which is why it’s funny that “today’s tunage” mocks both of them.
It’s cool, though, because it’s Pavement – one of our other favorite bands of all-time – doing the mocking.
Pavement never really hit it big commercially, but the lyrical and songwriting talent of this group was a step above everybody in the lo-fi alt-rock genre.
Seriously people, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is pure genius. And it’s one of five amazing full-length LPs released by the California-based band during their first run in the 1990s (Pavement actually regrouped in 2009 and played their first live show in over a decade back in March of this year).
Also not that anybody cares (we know we don’t) but Sic’s old band, Dead Agent Caper, actually covered “Cut Your Hair” – the first single off of this album.
Anyway, here’s “Range Life …”
After the glow, the scene, the stage, the set
Talk becomes slow but there’s one thing I’ll never forget
Hey, you gotta pay your dues before you pay the rent
Over the turnstile turn out in the traffic
There’s ways of living it’s the way I’m living
Right or wrong, it’s all that I can do
And I wouldn’t want to let you be
I want a range life, if I could settle down
If I could settle down, then I would settle down
I want a range life, if I could settle down
If I could settle down, then I would settle down
Run from the pigs, the fuzz, the cops, the heat
Pass me your gloves, there’s crime and it’s never complete
Until you snort it up or shoot it down
You’re never gonna feel free
Out on my skateboard the night is just hummin’
And the gum smacks are the pulse I’ll follow if my Walkman fades
But I’ve got absolutely no one, no one but myself to blame
Don’t worry, we’re in no hurry
School’s out, what did you expect?
I want a range life, if I could settle down
If I could settle down, then I would settle down
I want a range life, if I could settle down
If I could settle down, then I would settle down
Yeah
Out on tour with the smashing pumpkins
Nature kids, I they don’t have no function
I don’t understand what they mean
And I could really give a fuck
The stone temple pilots, they’re elegant bachelors
They’re foxy to me are they foxy to you?
I will agree they deserve absolutely nothing
Nothing more than me
Dreamin’ dream dream dream

pavement is definitely the BEST band of the nineties. my apologies to billy corgan. STP is not even in that league: “You’re an extra/in the movie adaptation/of the sequel/to your life.” pure lyrical genius.
