By FITSNews || South Carolina Democrats are salivating at the prospect of running perhaps their strongest-ever gubernatorial candidate against a splintered Republican Party, one that has controlled every lever of state government for the past eight years and yet produced absolutely nothing in the way of progress.
Their man? State Senator Vincent Sheheen (D-Camden), who cruised to victory over State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex by nearly a 3-to-1 margin earlier this week. Of course, Sheheen’s win has been overshadowed by the scandal involving Alvin Greene, the mystery man with a felony charge on his record who somehow wound up as the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee.
Seriously, people … it’s tough to claim a mandate when you’re dealing with such a painfully uninformed electorate.
Still, Democrats consternation over the Greene scandal has been balanced out to some extent by their optimism about Sheheen, who they feel gives them a real shot at capturing the governor’s mansion for the first time since Jim Hodges’ upset win over incumbent David Beasley twelve years ago. Sheheen, 39, certainly looks the part. He’s attractive, energetic, personable and has a picturesque young family.
He’s also vastly improved his skills on the stump in recent months, although our founding editor has repeatedly referred to him as a “hick” or a “bumpkin” given the not-so-subtle twang in his voice.
But appearance (and accents) aside, is Sheheen really all he’s cracked up to be?
We’ve noted on several occasions in the past that we didn’t think Sheheen was ready for prime time. More recently, our founding editor has taken to calling him “Vanilla” Sheheen for his failure to release much in the way of substantive policy (a problem all of the Republicans in this election shared, incidentally).
Then there’s Sheheen’s voting record – a decade of unabashed fiscal and social liberalism that is likely to cut against him with both fiscally-minded independents (i.e. the voters who will decide this race) as well as socially conservative democrats. Elected to the House in 2000 and the Senate four years later, Sheheen has cast literally thousands of liberal votes – a record that supporters of presumed Republican nominee Nikki Haley are no doubt pouring through with relish.
Sheheen also had a front-row seat for the disaster that befell the agency formerly known as the S.C. Employment Security Commission – which was something even his fellow Democrats attacked him for. That’s one of many issues Sheheen will have to deal with as he attempts to place the blame for eight years of failure exclusively on Mark Sanford and the dysfunctional Republicans (gee, that sounds like a great band name).
Speaking of the blame game, though, there’s an even bigger problem Sheheen will have to stare down in a general election.
Not only does he look and sound like just another good ‘ol boy, he comes from a prominent South Carolina political family and has remained joined at the hip with all of the same status quo special interests that have held this state back for decades.
Translation?
He is a good ‘ol boy.
For example, Sheheen opposes parental choice and wants to pour more money into our state’s failed public school system. More fundamentally, Sheheen opposes tax cuts and supports more government as the answer to South Carolina’s problems.
Yeah … good luck with all that in this electoral climate …

Well, if it comes down solely to an ear-flapping contest between Sheheen and Haley, Sheheen will win. Other than that, it will be Haley’s to lose.

Is that all you got? Seriously. Considering the cess pool the Republican candidate will crawl out of to campaign, is that all you got?
Hopefully character will count this election…the governor’s office is so weak anyway character should be the number one criteria.

If by parental choice, you mean Sheheen opposes using public funds to pay for private education, good for him. I have yet to hear one sound reason why school vouchers would benefit anyone in South Carolina other than parents (like me) who can already afford and do choose to pay for private education. I certainly don’t expect taxpayer dollars to help me pay for that choice, though.
The accredited private schools in South Carolina that turn out good results in terms of making sure students get what they need to get into and do well in college don’t have the space to accomodate many more students. They also have relatively strict entrance requirements that would weed out most if not all of the students who most need help. Most importantly, even with voucher support, the tuition at these schools would be cost-prohibitive for all but a few.
In truth, school vouchers would help only those who least need help. It is a disingenuous tool when applied as a policy to improve schools in South Carolina. Vouchers may have been successful in some larger cities with a number of parochial schools, but they have absolutely no place in S.C. All of this coming from someone who would benefit from a little relief from the cost of private school tuition…

Sheheen is an empty suit, think Hodges lite. He may even be Beasley Lite.
By countryboy June 11, 2010 at 10:48 am
I am definitely not a She-heen supporter but when you say he is for pouring more money into a failed public school system, there is a flip side to that. If he pushes his support for public education funding, he will get the vast majority of employees of all the schools in South Carolina, the Department of Education and those voters will be pushing family and friends to vote for She-heen. These are the same voters that made a difference when Hodge’s won and they represent a helluva block. So if whomever the Republican nominee is, is not strongly for public school funding, that block will be lost to her/him. Finally, while you may favor private schools and funding for them and while I don’t know how the majority of South Carolinians feel about the issue, I suspect you are in the minority….

On pub politics, the Republican guest said that Sheheen was the only SC Senator that voted against English being the official language… that would be awesome if it’s true, but I can’t find anything on it… and English has been the official language of SC since the 1987 IIRC…

Love, love, love this guy’s chances in Nov.
And he hasn’t had an “inappropriate physical relationship” with either Will Folks or Larry Marchant…that speaks volumes for him having at least a semblance of CLASS.
Hey, IT’S BROKE!!! THE GOP HAS RUN THIS STATE FURTHER DOWN THE RATHOLE in the last eight years; you’ve had a Gov. that almost refuses to work with the State Legislature to get anything really accomplished and the GOP is going to nominate yet another one that will have an even worse problem getting along with the State Legislature (whore status aside, however, it is hard to get anyone to take you seriously when they know that their buddy so-and-so has had his way with you before).
The fact that FITS wants to trash Sheheen and call him a “bumpkin” — that’s actually a good think to my way of thinking. Bring on the slow-drawling “bumpkin”, he’ll be refreshing after the nightmare of the GOP dominance.

Yeah, its helps — a lot, particularly this year. Even if he doesn’t, as long as he doesn’t LIE about it, then it works a lot better for me than some lying harlot who screwed half of Clemson University during her “favorite frat party girl” days and anyone that she thought might do her any good whatsoever since then until now.
It’s hard for a woman to have anyone take her seriously when they are thinking about the stories their buddies tell…if they haven’t been with you themselves.
Nope, don’t see Sheheen as having that problem. So I don’t think there is going to be any questions for him from national media such as, “Can you assure South Carolina voters that they’re not going to be embarrassed if they elect you?”
And no, no she can’t.

Sheheen has had many “inappropriate fiscal relationships” with every big spending, special interest in SC with the double legacy of Uncle Bob and Daddy Fred to vouch for him. Calm down, I did not say “voucher.”
You can pay me now or you can pay me later, but believe me, you are going to pay!
Albeit, he is such a nice young, decent man who has not committed adultery or even been arrested for anything. Two very good reasons to pay higher taxes and have bigger government and support someone who voted for Clinton, Kerry, Gore and Obama!
And, you conservative, private school loving, racist just hate poor children. Everybody agrees that public schools must have more and more money to provide jobs for all these people who need to work and get health insurance. In fact, if anybody deserves more money, it is our teachers!
I do wonder why the conservatives don’t get off this constant whine for competition and choice and parental involvement! Mindless anti-government rhetoric can never overcome mindless big government, union rhetoric!
And we absolutely will not tolerate that out-of-state jerk, Howard Rich, trying to fund any effort to change our outstanding public schools. We have all the in-state money we need to keep things the way they are from the SCEA teacher’s union money to all those other (200+) professional education associations and the SC School Boards Association! So there!
God knows, or at least Government knows, that the people of SC will not tolerate public money going for anything private. It just ain’t right!
By Jacob June 11, 2010 at 1:33 pm
Of course you wouldn’t criticize him before you got rid of your biggest enemy, Dr. Rex. Sheheen is pathetic, but you know what? All of the others are too. You included. You may not be a candidate, but you’re part of what is wrong with this state. I hope Sherman resurrects and burns the whole thing to the ground again.
By reasonable June 11, 2010 at 1:33 pm
One quick response to step to the right…most parents who choose private school for their children are not racists who hate poor children. I’m not entirely sure whether that was your implication or whether you were applying those perjoratives to republicans. Either characteristic is inaccurate as a general statement.
As I’ve said, I’ve been sending my children to private school for years. They have friends of all backgrounds; and, I’ve spent more volunteer hours on public school issues than I have at our private school.
As an aside directed at this website, how about making a redemptive move, Sic, and try to develop this into a forum for putting forward collaborative ideas that CAN move us forward? The real issue in South Carolina is voter ignorance, and no one in the media (here or otherwise) makes a legitimate attempt at clearly delineating the issues. Much more energy is spent in dumbing down the issues, making vituperative attacks and focusing on personal issues. This is true on the national level as well. People should quit whining about the MSM being liberally biased and whine about them not fully developing anything.

I think Sheheen is going to beat Haley in November. 610,021 votes were cast in the Democratic and Republican primaries this past week. 421,256 in the GOP and 188,765 in the Dem primary. Haley got 205,892 votes and while I think she will pick up some votes from the Bauer and McMaster camps, the majority of these are going to go to Barrett. It will not be enough to beat her but also will speak to her inability to speak to anything but her base which is about 50-60% of the Republican party. She has no message for these disaffected GOP voters who I am not certain are going to line up behind her in November and she definitely will have a problem with independent voters in SC.
The general is going to have a lot more voters and these new voters have to be considered less motivated voters and probably not clearly aligned to either camp. Past Governor races in SC in 2006, 2002 and 1998 had a total voter turnout of between 1.05 and 1.15 million votes. Therefore, based on history about half a million additional votes are going to be cast in the general that were not cast in either primary.
I believe these are mostly independent voters that did not find a candidate they wanted to vote for in the primary but they want a say in the state’s future. Sheheen has a far better message for these voters than she does and when is all said and done he will get the 40% of the electorate defined as Democrat and will then add to his total with a greater amount of the independent voters to win with 50 + 1.
By She-han-who June 11, 2010 at 1:43 pm
The Sheheen supporters are cute… the odds are greatly in Haley’s favor but you’d never know it by the way they talk shit…
By Catherine June 11, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Woodrow: BRAVO man, you make too much sense — don’t be throwing solid numbers out there, it confuses too many people :)
You’re speaking to me. I’m independent, most days I don’t know how anyone can support either of the two parties.
While Sheheen would not typically be my cup of tea, he makes what’s being offered up by the GOP in the Gov’s race look like the trash it is. The “right” is so splintered and fractured that they have heightened Republican-upon-Republican dog fights to a new level. And the state Party leadership is just not there to bring it all together so they can sing Kumbaya around the Campfire at some point. The GOP in this State couldn’t be in more dis-array. And then you have that whole Tea Party faction — that basically hate the GOP as it exists right now too.
This state’s GOP needs to review a word: Disenfranchised. Look it up KFlo. It means you aren’t offering up anyone that represents much the mass of this state wants.

Yes, he is the real deal!
Sheheen is one of the most forward thinking Legislators.
Unlike Haley, he understands HOW to get things done and passed in Columbia. She takes the block and impede Sanford style.
Unlike Haley, he does not whore around and is true to his religious beliefs.
Unlike Haley, he works across the aisle with Republicans (Carrol Campbell style)
Unlike Haley, his family has a long proud tradition of community and political service. Haley is praying that no one finds out about hers! (Come on, her Dad and Dr, Singh and Sis Singh???)
Unlike Haley, Sheheen understands that getting things DONE in Columbia consists of a little more than calling a press conference. Sheheen is from the Legislature, but understands what needs to happen to move our State and the Legislature forward.

Check out the article in The State from today at
http://thestatecom.typepad.com/ygatoday/2010/06/lexington-cos-political-moon-rising.html
This issue is ripe for the picking by the Democrats in the general election. This state may be trending conservative lately due to the continuing schism in the SC Republican Party but the people of this state are very defined by the area of the state they are from. When Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg, York, Horry, Beaufort and other counties learn that the three person conservative majority that will exist on the SC Budget and Control Board are all from Lexington County it is not going to look good or go over well.
Admittedly, a lot of people are not familiar with this board and what it controls; but if the public could be educated of the importance of this board and all that it controls many people around this state are not going to stand for this amount of control being in the hands of three people from Lexington County. This is starting to smell to me. I love in the article how Loftis and Haley say “they had not really thought about that” (that being that both of them plus Richard Eckstrom are all from Lexington). I call BS.
This is all too familiar now isn’t
From Wikipedia, “The so-called “Barnwell Ring” was a grouping of influential Democratic South Carolina political leaders from Barnwell County. The group included state Senator Edgar A. Brown, state Representative Solomon Blatt, Sr., Governor Joseph Emile Harley, and state Representative Winchester Smith, Jr. Together, the four occupied the most powerful positions of South Carolina government in 1941.
The ring arose in the late 1930s and lasted into the 1970s. State Senator Edgar A. Brown and state Representative Solomon Blatt were the chief principals of the ring. Brown was the president pro tempore and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1942 to 1972. Blatt was the speaker of the house from 1937 to 1946 and 1951 to 1973. Both men denied the existence of the ring until 1963 when Brown exclaimed “Long live the Barnwell Ring” at a dinner to honor Blatt.”
Please let’s not go back to this.
By Step to the Right June 11, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Reasonable, please forgive my use of “sarcasm.” Indeed, I do not believe the gibberish that often accompanies the ‘boilerplate’ criticisms of individuals who choose to send their children to a non-government funded school. Are you correct in your observations and I believe that proper delineation of the issues requires responsible leadership, proper use of valid and reliable data and some belief in the ability of government to act in the best interest of all of its citizens. I fear those aspects of our current political apparatus are not possible and the mainstream media does nothing but exasperate this situation through intended or unintended bias in its reporting.
I fully believe that the Internet and websites such as this one are making a huge impact on the amount of political discourse available to the average citizen. Yet, we are not able to use this format to fully debate the issues with any hope of serious change that might lead to more effective and efficient public policy. But, it is a wonderful example of “freedom of speech”!

She needs to take a polygraph test about the affairs, and she needs to come clean about her religion. This isn’t about party politics any longer, it is all about people! Vote for Vincent!

Your criticisms amount to a hill of beans.
1. Who is not a good old boy. They are everywhere.
2. Kept the state back for generations. This state has not moved forward under Republicans, either. And the Republicans this time around have a lot of corruption –look at Ravevel and others.
3.This guy looks clean as a whistle. He is Catholic, cleancut. He knows the tax code. He is not “lite” anything.
Maybe the best thing is that he is not sleazy Sandford, redeneck Knotts, crooked Ravenel, and lying-about-military-background Gresham Barrett.

I’ve seen a lot of stories on this site about Nikki Haley’s affair, but no one seems to be talking about Trey Gowdy’s affairs. I’ve heard from several different people, so I know it’s not just a rumor, that Trey Gowdy has committed adultery against his wife. Someone needs to investigate this.

Recap:
Revealing emails.
Too many phone calls.
Parking at Sic’s pad.
The other guy’s claims.
Complete records check failure.
Panic reaction of resigning if proven.
No disclosure until after the election.

I heard the same thing about Trey Gowdy, and I also heard he threatened to sue anyone who said anything about it, which would explain why the media is so clammed up about it. I’m serious, where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire.
