Nikki Haley And The SCGOP’s November Dilemma

gop elephant

By Will Folks || I’ve had numerous Republicans contact me over the last few days seeking a glimpse into my thinking as the drama surrounding S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley’s candidacy continues to unfold.

“You need to play all your cards on Nikki,” they tell me.  “We have to choose our nominee.”

Honestly?  That’s not my problem.  I’ve made it perfectly clear on numerous occasions that I think Rep. Haley’s three rivals in the race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination are as worthless as tits on a bull, which makes them not unlike the two leading Democratic candidates – Vincent Sheheen and Jim Rex.

“At a time when our state desperately needs to keep a fiscal conservative reformer in the Governor’s Office, the Republican Party has put up three status quo, social conservative panderers,” I wrote over a year ago.

I still believe that to be the case.

Also, I have never believed that a candidate’s marital fidelity (or lack thereof) should be considered when making a determination about their ability to govern, unless of course they lied about it - like S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford did last year and like Rep. Haley is continuing to do as it relates to my recent acknowledgment.

Until two weeks ago, my website planned on endorsing Rep. Haley- whose political career I have aggressively championed ever since this website was created three-and-a-half years ago.  In fact, here’s one of the paragraphs I wrote last month in preparing this endorsement, which was supposed to drop on May 31:

We also like Nikki because she has proven her willingness to take a bullet for what she believes.  In pushing for greater government transparency, she and her colleague Nathan Ballentine were rudely stripped of their committee assignments because they refused to back down from powerful Speaker Bobby Harrell, who like most legislative leaders wants taxpayers to remain in the dark when it comes to how their money is being spent.

That setback only made her stronger, though.

Now, Nikki is continuing her fight for greater transparency, pushing a bill that would force “on-the-record” votes for all major legislation as well as individual sections of the state budget.  This scrutiny would save taxpayers’ millions of dollars, and go a long way toward restoring the public’s faith in government.

Indeed, government transparency has been the political (and public relations) fuel for “Haley’s Comet,” although South Carolinians have learned over the last two weeks that Rep. Haley obviously doesn’t want this same standard applied to her.

In fact, when reporters investigating the affair claims requested access to Rep. Haley’s taxpayer-funded email account (and more importantly the computer hard drives associated with that account), she refused to release this information - citing a legislative exemption that allows her to evade our state’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws and keep this public information hidden from public view.

So much for sunshine, right?

That’s not the only example of disingenuous behavior on Rep. Haley’s part, though.  In addition to her ongoing denials, Rep. Haley flat-out lied when she claimed I had not given her a ”heads-up” regarding my decision to come forward.  The record will show I informed her directly (via text message) two days in advance of publishing my admission, which is obviously in addition to the dozens of additional text messages I released outlining the extensive coordination I had with her campaign in the weeks leading up to the story breaking.

These messages (which also included exchanges I had with a reporter who was chasing the story and a politicial operative who was pushing it) not only document my efforts to work with her campaign to minimize the damage to her candidacy, more importantly they prove what I said from the beginning of all this – that I came forward only when I believed that a media report regarding our affair was imminent.

Then there was this telling note sent to me by Haley campaign manager Tim Pearson:

I’m telling you man, we keep this under wraps and (Nikki) is going to win.

They may “win” anyway … at least the GOP nomination.

What these text messages did not show, however, was the two weeks of pure hell that my wife and I went through prior to deciding that this was an issue that needed to be addressed preemptively on my website.  Literally every day during those two weeks there was a new report of some different piece of evidence allegedly being leaked to this reporter or that reporter, and based on what I knew to be true (and based on one specific piece of evidence that I had seen with my own eyes a year earlier) I could not be sure that a story exposing the relationship wasn’t going to run.

We were under seige, and we did what we felt we had to do to protect our two-year marriage – a union that never would have transpired had Rep. Haley had her way, incidentally.

Anyway, in addition to these text messages, I have also released phone records showing hundreds of calls between myself and Rep. Haley during the time frame I laid out - many of them occurring after midnight and lasting for several hours.  In fact, as the days go by these records have proven increasingly difficult for Rep. Haley to explain.

After initially attempting to minimize my role as one of her advisors, Rep. Haley is now assigning a level of involvement I never had – claiming that we spent these late hours on the phone strategizing over her campaign to become chair of the powerful House Labor, Commerce and Industry (LCI) committee.

That statement is laughable.

First of all, the LCI race – a contest from which Rep. Haley eventually withdrew - isn’t a public election, it’s a vote determined by a handful of state lawmakers.  That means there’s no public relations component to it whatsoever.  Accordingly, there was absolutely no need to strategize so incessantly about it with a PR advisor - particularly not so far ahead of time and particularly not with someone Rep. Haley initially downplayed as an employee who merely ”did some writing” for her, a person she claimed (prior to the release of the phone records, anyway) not to have known particularly well.

In fact, over the duration of our professional relationship, I attended precisely one meeting with Rep. Haley regarding her LCI bid - a gathering that took place at lobbyist Larry Marchant’s office many months after the lengthy late night phone calls between Rep. Haley and myself.  It was Mr. Marchant who ran Rep. Haley’s LCI race, not me, and the notion that she and I would spend countless hours on the phone strategizing about it over a year before it took place is ridiculous.

But Rep. Haley has done more than just deny, lie and evade during this process.  In the weeks following my purposefully broad admission of an ”inappropriate physical relationship” with her (something she could have addressed in any number of innocuous ways), Rep. Haley’s supporters have waged a vicious smear campaign against me.  In addition to their full-frontal assault on my credibility and the credibility of my website, I have been bombarded with all manner of threats and attempts on their part to portray me as part of the “good ol’ boy” network that is seeking to bring Rep. Haley down.

This contention is also patently ridiculuous.  FITSNews is not only the leading voice of the reform movement in South Carolina, it is (and will continue to be) the most aggressive news outlet in the state when it comes to exposing the defenders of this state’s failed status quo.  Our record of advocacy on both of these fronts is exhaustive and indisputable.

Ironically, though, the state’s mainstream media – which has been providing comfort (and cover) to the good ol’ boy establishment for decades - has decided to go along for the ride, portraying Rep. Haley as the victim in this drama while they secretly sharpen their knives in anticipation of her being the Republican nominee in the general election.

They want to see Vincent Sheheen elected – and this is just a means to that end for them.

Of course to explain this media incongruence, supporters of Rep. Haley – and even Rep. Haley herself on one occasion – have hinted that I must have been paid to “betray” her.  In fact, one website with close ties to Haley and Sanford’s top strategist, Jon Lerner, claimed at one point to know for a fact that someone paid me to attack Rep. Haley, however this website was later forced to back down from that claim.

Another popular theory is that I have been deliberately “dripping” information in an effort to cause maximum damage to Rep. Haley’s campaign - while others believe that I am holding certain cards back because I secretly want her to win the nomination.  Neither theory is true.  I am releasing all the information I can as soon as it is authenticated and approved for disemmination by my attorneys – which is one reason why the Haley campaign has been unable to dispute any of the documentation we have released thusfar.

Will so-called “smoking guns” be released prior to primary day?  Prior to the runoff?  Prior to the general election?

That’s honestly not up to me.  It’s up to what my team is able to positively authenticate in anticipation of facing a blizzard of denials (although curiously no libel suits or demands for retraction) from Rep. Haley’s campaign.

Like I said, we will continue to release what we can, when we can – fully condident that the truth regarding this situation will eventually come out.

Speaking of which, in addition to these records, my team is preparing affidavits from literally dozens of witnesses – including several who observed Rep. Haley and I leaving nightclubs together late at night as well as several who will testify to seeing Rep. Haley’s car parked outside of my downtown Columbia, S.C. town house on mulitple occasions at all hours of the night during the time frame in question.  I’ve been told that several of these witnesses have taken the step of contacting members of the mainstream media regarding what they saw, although I obviously can’t control when (or how) that side of the story will come out.

Regarding these late night visits to my town house, at this point it bears repeating that I have purposely refrained from discussing the physical details of my relationship with Rep. Haley.  Believe it or not, I am a Southern gentleman and at the point when I felt that public disclosure of this relationship was imminent, I phrased my admission in a manner consistent with the belief that what transpired between us was nobody’s business but ours and those individuals we chose to share it with.  This was also, as I mentioned earlier, done to provide Rep. Haley with maximum maneuverability in terms of how she chose to address the issue publicly.  In fact, she could have admitted to kissing me one time and that would have been the end of it as far as I was concerned.  I certainly would have never confirmed nor denied anything beyond that.

Obviously she decided to pursue another course of action.

Additionally, I have also refrained from discussing the ”feelings” Rep. Haley and I had for each other because I believe South Carolinians have suffered through more than enough emotional “over-disclosure” from our politicos.  Heck, one Mark Sanford interview alone provides more than enough “sharing” to last the people of this state a lifetime.

So … what happens now?

Obviously Republicans must go to the polls Tuesday – and in all likelihood again on June 22 – to determine who they want to represent their party in the fall election for governor.

My advice to them?

“Good luck with all that …”

Will, your deperation is showing. Maximizing the number of words in your post does not compensate for your lack of real substance.

Baby, you grabbed the tar baby of innuendo and character assassination – it’s not working but you’re stuck with it and its effects on your reputation. These effects will be with you for your entire life.

“oh what a tangled web we weave….”

    Will:

During this whole fracas, I have defended your side and continue to believe that you and Haley had that relationship that you claim.

I was amazed that you were blindsided by the Haley campaign’s response and how you have been treated by the Sanfraudians. I mean, you worked with those guys for years…did you not figure out what kind of people they were? For them, it is about POWER not reform, not transparency. They use those issues to build political support for themselves but really have no desire to implement those ideals when it applies to them.

Also, if Haley was willing to cheat on her husband and the father of her children to carry on a relationship with you, what makes you think she would not be willing to throw you under the bus when it suits her? Ask her husband about her character and integrity!

Wait, so vote for Nikki Haley because she’s a created entity in politics, supported by the establishment of the GOP that is grooming her for their purposes?

Or don’t vote for Nikki Haley (or anyone else at all, I’m gathering) because she’s lying about this affair?

I understand the legal ramifications that you have to deal with, but I’m a bit fuzzy on that middle part where no one’s worthy, except the one that lied.

And is CNN really going to cover this story? Are other media outlets going to receive the same data? After all, if it’s out there, there should be some sort of legal cover for it.

Well put, Mr. Folks. I don’t understand the insistence of the Haley apologists to not see the forest through the trees.

Again, I am a Democrat from out of state (Indiana), so my interest here is merely to watch the GOPer on GOPer carnage, and to irritate the doctrinaire Gee-Oh-Peebaggers as much as I am able.

But, I actually started feeling sorry for you when you were so viciously attacked for telling the truth with a heavy heart.

Hey, just remember that there is always a place at the table for you in the Democratic Party. We liberal progressives are almost like Roman Catholics. We embrace anybody and everybody.

Good luck to you. I will continue posting for awhile (until Haley withdraws in shame, for sure). I certainly won’t want to miss the “I told you so” aspect.

I enjoy reading and responding to many of the regular posters on this site (from all parts of the political spectrum) and am glad to have discovered it (even in such a strange manner).

Quick research on Haley and the LCI committee turned this up.

From an October 2008 Free Times article:

**Haley now has a challenger for the first time since being elected, and while she doesn’t totally discount her opposition, her focus might be on a different race — one that would start immediately if she is re-elected.

“I am running for chair of the Labor, Commerce and Industry [LCI] Committee,” she says, referring to a key House committee.**

Also, from same October 2008 story: “And if Haley wins another term, she seems confident she will be the future leader of LCI. Whispers of “first woman governor of South Carolina” might not lag far behind.”

Not a public election, but still, people were writing about it…

Frankly, sir, you are starting to sound like a foot stomping brat. As hard as this may be for you, and your “team” to grasp, nobody is particularly interested in your story. Its impact lasted for your fully allotted fifteen minutes of fame, but that time has long ago expired. The only person who has the slightest interest in whatever your relationship with Haley was, is you. By the way, your smarmy comments about the consequences that will result in November can best be described as sophomoric. They sound like the chidings of an immature teenage girl; “You better watch out….you just wait and see”….Oh, please.

For some one who lived “in agonizing hell” for weeks, in fear that revelations regarding your “inappropriate physical relationship” with Mrs. Haley would become public, you have made an amazing recovery. Now you can’t seem to stop talking about it. Your wife must have to hood you like a falcon to shut you up so she can get some sleep.

Libel suits? Retractions? Man, get a grip. Before this crap hits the courtroom she is going to have to produce somebody that actually believes this this swill. It would be the equivalent of suing you for picking your nose at the dinner table. So far all you have demonstrated is a lack of good manners. Neither your words nor your writings have carried the weight to affect her, or opinions of her, one way or the other.

Your story is boring. Now fetch your rattle so you can throw it again.

Sad but unsurprising, then, that Sic Willie** has succumbed to the same temptation.

Assuming there was a sexual affair, what “the founding editor” could have done is covered it with the wife, reached an understanding with her, then advised Haley that someone might be making the affair public. He could then have told Haley he would never be the one to make it public and he would not admit it if someone one else made the claim. So the “founding editor” taking the position he “had” to break the story is complete and total bull$hit in my opinion.

In Nikki’s defense, again assuming there was an affair, I can understand her denial. She is at least trying to convince the kids it didn’t happen and maybe the husband as well.

But I am still going to vote for her as long as she is a candidate because the other Republican candidates are a joke and I won’t vote for a democrat again until Obama and Spratt are out of office.

    Will Folks:

“Believe it or not, I am a Southern gentleman…”

Are you KIDDING me? You, sir, are the most despicable political hack in history and you will certainly go down in infamy!

I mean, where do I start by illustrating the lack of logic in your long-winded article? You start by saying Haley’s primary opponents are all worse than her and how she is your preferred candidate. And then, with the same breath, you turn round and accuse her of infidelity, untruthfulness, and every evil thing you can think of. So we are to vote for a person with all these flaws?

The truth will certainly come out and I know it will point to either one of her primary opponents or one of the Democrats. Because there is something called motive and so far you haven’t clearly explained to your audience why you “kissed and told.” Same as Marchant that claims to have had a sudden pang of conscience after over 2 years that led him to confess to Andre Bauer (Note: not a primary obligation to his wife). You are all crooks and I will sooner exchange my bank details with Nigerian scam artists than trust either of you.

The theme that also seems to be running through your article, Andre Bauer’s campaign, and comments from Paris Sailin (who I still suspect of being your alter ego) is that Nikki should release her phone records and other information. For what? So you could go through for fodder to use against her in the general? How soon do you think the conversation will shift from alleged infidelity to spending etc.. if she were to release the records.

My conclusion: currently, you have nothing on her and this is all a form of blackmail to either damage her so she’s unelectable or hold some sword over her head so she doesn’t change the status quo when elected. Sorry, you’ve failed miserably and the gravy train has come to a stop.

Governor Haley – start pronouncing it and get used to it!

My opinion, for what it is worth, is simple. I, like Will, believe that a person’s sexual life is their business; their fidelity, or lack thereof, is not my concern. Your boy parts can fall into whatever girl parts it likes, or vice-versa. I personally believe that unfaithfulness to your wife, partner or significant other is a sin – but that’s just me. Nikki had my vote for the other three choices are just, well, awful. And eventhough my intelligence says I should still vote for her, I can’t.

See, for me, my decision was made for me. She lied. She lied, lied, lied, lied, lied. To save herself from a certain downward spiral, she lied. I hate liars. She could have said no comment or just confirmed it – she didn’t have to lie. And the other awful thing is she’s knowingly taking Palin, Sanford and Romney down with her.

So here I am a Conservative without a nominee. Three days from the polls and I have no idea what to do. And, I bet dollars to doughnuts that I am not alone. It’s a bit of a quandry no doubt. The liar, the DC insider, the inept or the more inept. There’s got to be a better choice. I’d rather Sanford stay in office. He atleast told the truth.

Even if you had a relationship with her ( which I HIGHLY doubt) you have betrayed her and created mess. And what do you expect from NH some kind of hugs when you smear her like this? Naturally she will defend herself..so don’t act like you are the victim. And this nonsense that she should have just said that we kissed speaks volumes about your desperation and manufacturing the lies.

Whether or not your so far unproven allegations are true, you sound like an incredible lowlife jerk.

If they are true, she was either very smart or very lucky to not stay involved with you. Not all marriages last forever and stay perfectly monogamous the whole time. That’s ideal, but in fact most marriages either end in divorce or involve some infidelity at some point from one or both partners.

If she ever did develop feelings for somebody else and stray, she should have chosen someone better than you.

(sigh) You’re unmatched insight aside, I am not Will Folks’ alter ego. A simple google of my “name” will show hundreds of postings and comments on other sites. A quick reading of some of those will show similarity in style and substance to these. If you really need to know one way or the other, you can put yourself at rest on this yourself.

I don’t know why right-wingers think that anyone with similar opinions on a blog must be the same person, but I suspect it’s some kind of feeling of inadequacy thing.

That said, I never advocated a position that Haley should release her e-mail records. If you would actually read anything before replying to it without being so distracted by formulating your “incisive” response in what passes as your head, you would know this.

What I have advocated is her releasing her own phone records to bolster her ridiculous response to Folks’ release of phone records. She claimed that her late night into early morning phone conversations with Folks during the time period of his alleged affair were work-related, that this was standard modus operandi with her and her staff, and that everyone who knows her knows this.

Fine, then it should be a simple matter to produce her own records of some of these late night work-related calls with others.

End of story then, wouldn’t you say?

She won’t because she can’t. Her claim is just another one of her absurd lies.

That’s why you’ve got the lawyers working on this right? What “southern gentleman” runs around day after day trying to convince as many people as possible that he had sex with a married woman? Face it, Wil, you are radioactive. Beyond being incredibly sleazy, your actions are just plain dumb.

If I have to read one more time that what did — or did not — go on between Nikki Haley and a paramour is a private matter and unrelated to her ability to govern, I am going to just cry. Doesn’t anyone object anymore to hypocrisy?!

If Nikki Haley is an adultress, she proved herself a liar long before she denied the affair with Will Folks; her self-professed commitment to “family values” itself was a lie. If she is an adultress, she is also seriously emotionally immature, living her life pretending to be one thing while actually being the opposite.

It’s one thing to be a person who can’t — or won’t — honor marital vows and is honest and upfront about his or her inability — or disinclination — to honor them. THEN we can have a debate about whether or not such is relevant to one’s ability to govern. But being a bloody HYPOCRITE about it should automatically disqualify you.

    Will,

The only people who do not believe you are the ones who want Haley as their Governor. I, too, supported Haley and her transparency until she became a hypocrite and compulsive, yes compulsive, liar! She and Bill Connor must have gotten their ethics from the same book, and it ain’t the Good Book!!!

Bill has also denied being unfaithful to his wife, and I know without ANY DOUBT that he had a months long affair with a woman in law school from September 2002 until January 2003. And, yes, there is ample proof, including e-mails and pictures. He talked negatively about his wife at the time, and yes, he professed to have fallen in love with this woman, whom he called his “soul-mate”, just as ol’ Sanford did. Ah, but he never did so publicly. Quite the contrary, he threw the woman under the bus when the affair ended. That’s when the lies really started.

Now, Connor claims he has not been unfaithful and has had a wonderful 19 year marriage. What you did was honorable, Will. You told the truth! Everyone wants to say that you should have kept your mouth shut, but you felt you needed to tell it as it was. And, you are right; Haley could have handled it better. She should not have lied. The people of SC will NEVER forgive her for making fools of them the way she has. I also admire the fact that you were never out to hurt her, she did that herself with her blatant lies and flagrant disregard for you and your family.

As for Haley’s husband, I have no clue why he would stand by her, unless he really believes her, which is very sad and pathetic. You had better believe if my spouse had carried on the way Nikki did with you, i.e. talking at all hours of the night and into the morning, and proof was provided via phone records, I would have no trouble believing the accuser.

But, maybe he is just like Connor’s wife, who knew all about his affair. However, she wants to be the “Lt. Guvna’s” wife, so she is looking the other way. She did keep him on a short leash in law school after his affair. Now, however, she seems to have forgiven him and thinks his lying is fine as long as he is not lying to her.

How can any man or woman condone lying to the people of SC? Don’t they realize once a liar, always a liar.

Both Haley and Connor claim to have “found” Christ, but that doesn’t keep them from breaking the commandments, two I can think of right away: Adultery and Bearing False Witness. Perhaps they are above the commandments, just as they think they are above common ethical standards. This sort of duplicity is the type that breeds more evil in the world.

If either of these people were really Christians, they would have confessed and sought forgiveness from God, their spouses and the people of SC. Liars never win, not in the long run.

Consider this scenario: Haley is elected (and I think she will be because of her lies). Haley then resigns, as promised, when the proof comes out. Just like that, Connor, the likely winner of the Lt. Gov. race, also because of his lies, is your governor. And, so the story goes-we have yet another governor with a “Sanford” problem.

Keep your chin up, Will. Down the road, these naysayers will be back to your site to read your well written posts and their anger about Haley-Gate will dissipate. It is only a matter of time until the Haley house of cards implodes.

Prayers are with you and your family. Don’t let the liars get you down. The truth is, they just can’t handle the truth!

The primary is Tuesday and there will probably be a run-off on June 22. People better think long and hard about their vote and be sure. Whoever wins the primary will be on the ballot in November. We will have five months before the election, five long months of one GOP vs one Dem for governor.

If the Haley trash continues to escalate and gets any dirtier than it is now we will have a Sheheen, Rex or Ford sitting in the capitol. Which means the GOP literally gives the dems the governor race simply from how one votes in June.

I still don’t understand Haley’s comment Thursday, “if she is elected governor and irrefutable evidence of an affair surfaces, she would resign.”

Anybody who knows Will knows he isn’t afraid to say stuff on the record. He wouldn’t use sock puppetry to get his point out, doesn’t fit his m.o.

I was accused of being a Folks sock puppet earlier, which if you knew who I was you’d think was totally ridiculous. He and I are usually on the opposite side of things, even though I have a lot of faith in him to tell the truth on things. I also know that not everything Will does as is carefully calculated as people seem to think, and he’s a guy that has emotions. And even though we’re not always on the same side, I’ve never had any malice towards him, and I believe that he was telling the truth about revealing this before the media hit him with it.

I don’t have the slightest bit of inside info, and this could be the greatest long con in the history of politics. But the evidence so far has stacked up pretty heavily on Will’s side (and Larry’s too). And Nikki’s strategy of uncorroborated denial and refusal to release documents, etc., has not endeared me to her.

I’ve had women bosses before, and men too. If I made a sexual allegation against any of them, they could quickly produce reams of emails that don’t disclose the hint of sexual innuendo. And yeah, that’s not proof positive that nothing happened, but it’s pretty good evidence. If Will’s emails and whatnot to Nikki had a professional tone, she’d have released them already. That she hasn’t tells me that they must have a lot of innuendo in them or maybe full-on sex talk. That, to me, is the most damning fact out there re Nikki.

I will also say, however, that Larry Marchant’s polygraph has the potential to totally change the whole dynamic of this race. If he passes, and I can’t imagine he will fail since he has agreed to take it, that may resonate far outside the chattering classes in Columbia.

This is pure wild speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Will’s wife encouraged him (to put it mildly) to out the official word of this affair and mess up Haley’s plans big time. I find it intriguing in his post that he mentions them discussing and planning this disclosure together – and right after Folks discloses that Nikki would have liked to prevent their marriage.

Maybe Will’s coming clean on this has the added benefit of showing his wife that the affair is irretrievably over, with a small side dish of cold revenge served up by the two of them together for domestic tranquility reasons.

Again, pure speculation pulled from my orifice, but thought I’d throw that out there.

so, it sounds like will was gonna stick with to guns re: nikki endorsement before the story got hot and maybe even piss off his wife in the process?

instead his hand gets forced, he confesses albeit gently and with plenty of running room, nikki’s camp blows the underhanded lob and smashes it back at him. will (slowly) goes off on her, in response.

    1. Months to take her down. MSM reporters are stretched thin these days and good reporting takes time. But like vultures, they eat slow.

    2. A self-writing story. Can you imagine how much fun it will be for the dailies to cover the GOP tearing itself apart as it becomes apparent their nominee is a proven lier and cannot win? Easy copy is the wet-dream of a beat reporter.

    3. A Democrat Governor in the reddest of the red states during the 2012 GOP Presidential Primary. Sweet revenge as far as the MSM are concerned.

“Text messages showing Haley’s campaign lied about not being in touch with Folks before affair news was published . . .”

that and the phone calls still remain consistently undefeated. So the big question is why Haley’s lying already to the people of South Carolina, claiming she would resign as Governor before even being nominated?

Sure it’s smoke, but it is Will’s fire. My curiosity is piqued now that there has been ample time to secure legal cover. If Will’s advocating against Haley (I re-read the statement a few times to be sure!)…I figure it’s been quite enough time to be able to finally say something about it. After all, there’s no reason to further deny the press, is it?

Haley’s camp has done everything to quash this, through quite a series of high-profile hitters, Palin, Erickson, Geraghty, and the irony of both Sanfords reiterating that they’re the powers that are pushing this candidate upon South Carolina.

They employ the same PR firm that defended Sanford, and fed Erickson this little gaffe: http://www.redstate.com/erick/2009/06/23/the-lessons-of-mark-sanfords-hike/

And with the claims of Bauer’s direct involvement, people are redirected from the real question, one that journalists have missed…

Why’d Haley lie? I’m still waiting for shoes to fall on the affair thread, but Haley sure didn’t tell the truth about her business/personal discussions with Will Folks.

So there continues to be a reason to pursue a story, and even more emphasis going into the next 72 hours. If not done now, then it will be done later, when the fate of the GOP in South Carolina becomes too big to fail.

I’d say support Nikki Haley if she represents the best for SC. But don’t discard the fact that she did lie about her relationship with Folks.

Will’s documented how they’ve been in contact.

Haley has not provided any detail of how they “haven’t” been in contact.

Should be pretty easy to show documentation of other late night calls, equal representations of phone call discussions from any month…

Story’s still relevant, if not more relevant now.

Obviously, Will Folks’ strategy has now shifted to sowing doubts in Republicans about the viability of Nikki in the general vs the Democrat. After spearheading a failed attempt to sully her name and character, he is now trying to argue that she is damaged goods. He is also insinuating in this article that he will try to continue the ‘drip, drip, drip’ strategy even when she goes through the primary. I say, bring it on Mister!

I am willing to bet that your shenanigans are already 98% over. Your strategy relied too much on Nikki getting into a game of countering your allegations by releasing her records and then fishing for dirt in those records. Unfortunately, she is so much smarter than you and your accomplices and did not rise to your bait. So now, you hide behind records being “authenticated and approved for dissemination” by your attorneys. Really? Two weeks after you made your allegation? You mean there was no tangible proof before you shot off your mouth? At least Marchant is smarter – he acknowledged straight out that he had no proof.

Let me give you a word of advice, you only have till Tuesday to come out with any tangible proof if you have any. After the primary, the whole power of the SCGOP will be unleashed against you, and if you think you have had a raw deal – you haven’t seen anything yet. Why all this focus on Nikki Haley’s appearance? The woman is not that attractive. As well, her husband is no Patrick Swayze. I don’t normally comment on people’s appearance, but why focus on Will Folks lack of male beauty? People have affairs all the time with those who we wouldn’t pair them with.

I also don’t get why Folks has become the “Sleaze” from his allegations. He was afraid that things would come out that would offend his wife. Read that again; his wife. Why not head them off before they become public?

The phone records with the voluminous amount of calls, some late night and lasting an hour or more, DON’T make sense other than in some type of close relationship. Then this allegation from the other politico comes out that he had a one night stand with Haley.

I’m sorry, there is too much smoke there. This isn’t a concentrated effort by the opposition, whoever that is, to sling mud at Haley, and I wouldn’t be surprised if other allegations eventually surface. Haley, just like Mark Sanford, is not what she portrays herself as.

Last, Nikki Haley may have been the Tea Party candidate, BUT is that what SC needs; another Mark Sanford who can’t even get along with his own party? We need someone running our state who can cross the aisles and get things done.

I know her husband puts on a uniform every day, but what is his job? Has he ever been deployed outside of Richland County? If he has been deployed to foreign soil, I appreciate his service. I’m not questioning anything, I just don’t know, but it has been an issue Rep Haley has pushed.

For once I truly don’t know who to vote for in the GOP Governor’s race. Or any other GOP primary race for that matter. This has been one self destructive party led by the Governor and all other statewide GOP officials of the past 8 years.

Name one truly worth voting for. Look at the last group: Sanford (Maria), Ravenel (drugs), Sharpe (cock fighting), Eckstrom (stalker e-mails), etc. What’s even more interesting is that all but Ravenel would probably be the pick of the Tea Party.

Once again, I am faced with voting for the “chance” of some form of conservative public policy becoming the foundation of state government verses total retreat backwards to the failed policies of the socialist Democrats!

Let me get this straight. Vincent Sheheen wants to ‘lead’ this state by supporting Obama’s radical liberal Democrat positions through the ‘leadership’ of higher and higher taxes, socialized medicine, public teachers’ unions for ‘no fault’ teaching and complete incompetence, government solutions to every problem, economic development through total government control, use of the race card–which divides the races even more–and by some miracle public policy will be transformed in S.C. because he is a Democrat and has managed to keep his zipper up!

If elected, Sheheen will go right back to the same failed liberal policies that controlled this state’s destiny for the last 200 years. I have heard NOTHING NEW come out of his mouth – The names change but the lack of leadership is always the same.

I will take my chances with ‘new’ conservative hacks any day – at least my pocketbook and individual freedoms are not in as much danger when the conservative hacks are in office. Oh, and I won’t have to look at the usual party losers like Jim Clyburn, John Spratt, Don Fowler, etc. chairing some state-appointed ‘select committee’ while handing out more jobs to their family and falling asleep at town meetings with the rest of the liberal jerks who think their election gives them the right to lie, cheat, steal AND screw around while the government sponsored media covers for them! NO THANKS!

Some Republicans might be unable to keep their zippers up, bras fastened and stupid mouths shut, but at least they don’t think that what is wrong with this state and country is the need for more government, higher taxes and less individual freedom!

When Sheheen, or any other Democrat, condemns Obama let us know.

South Carolina, now virtual an outpost of the Third World politically (and socially) and economically, was once arguably the richest and most civilized southern state, with Virginia the only real alternative. NC pine-tree tappers? Georgia penal colony descendants? The hell-hole of Mississippi? The small-farm colony of Alabama? The semi-tropical semi-savagery of Florida? Pulleeze. Even New Orleans could not pull up the rest of Louisiana to make par. But then the long long decline. And just look at South Carolina now. So much potential. Such nice, though easily-led people. Such poor and self-serving leaders.

+5555555555! I totally agree with you, bro.

It never ceases to amaze me how liberals/Democrats choose to not campaign on policies but always on emotion. With Bush and the GOP congress, they whipped the American people into a frenzy by trumping every single issue into a scandal with the connivance of their MSM accomplices. And then once they took over, they messed up the economy (circa 2006) and started trampling on individual freedom as exemplified by the Obamacare debacle.

Sheheen and his supporters on this forum would like to be given the governorship of SC based on what? Liberal policies of tax-and-spend? They will lie, cheat, and do anything, even appear conservative just to get power. But once they get in, it’s fast track to Obama and Pelosi’s failed policies. And if you think any scandals (sex or otherwise) will be given the same media attention as with Republicans, think again. Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer, Blagokevich, Blumenthal, Rangel… the list goes on. They will seek to re-write the rule books: “In Democrat-land, scandals are resume enhancers.”

I’ll take a conservative/GOP candidate, tarred and feathered with scandals, over a squeaky-clean liberal or pseudo-conservative/Democrat any day.

Marchant agrees to polygraph, Haley not interested
COLUMBIA — With just days to go before voters decide party nominees in the race for governor, Republican candidate Nikki Haley has been on the receiving end of several accusations.

Two men have come forward claiming they had physical relationships with Haley in the past.

Lobbyist Larry Marchant and blogger Will Folks have made the allegations that have made national media headlines, but neither have offered any substantial proof to back up the claims.

WACH Fox News has offered both Marchant and Folks an invitation to a paid polygraph test conducted by a state licensed expert at their convenience.

WACH Fox News contacted both accusers late Thursday afternoon.

Marchant replied Friday accepting the invitation under one condition; that WACH Fox News announce to Haley that he is challenging her to take the test and get her either accepting or declining on camera.

Regardless of her reply, Marchant said he would then take the test.

So Friday night, our partner FOX Carolina caught up with Haley in the Upstate where she was campaigning.

“What are you going to do, start strapping polygraph tests to everybody making an allegation?” Haley told the reporter on camera. “I think we need to be practical here.”

WACH Fox News will follow up with Marchant to get his response to Haley’s comments.

Folks contacted us Friday morning, however he did not tell us whether he would submit to the lie detector test.

Keep checking back for updates and rely on our Politics Page for the latest on the gubernatorial primary race along with others.

Putting aside the hypocrite angle of the “family values” party of the “holier than thous” – let’s look at your list of Democrats who according to another one of your ignorant posts, “In Democrat-land scandals are resume enhancers.”

Bill Clinton – Impeached – Yeah, no media attention to that one.

John Edwards – Disgraced, subject of ridicule in Democratic circles, again, no media attention on that one.

Eliot Spitzer – Forced from office. Resigned

Blagokevich – Impeached, removed from office

Blumenthal – Jury out, but not a serious “scandal” in the same sense as the others. He misstated and exaggerated (lied about) his military record, but he also mostly told the truth about it.

Rangel – Still under investigation, case not closed. Will face censure, loss of committee when this is over is my prediction

Again, all of these have been roundly publicized by the media. You know that. How did you find out about these things and follow them?

Now, let’s talk about current Senators Vitter and Ensign. Senator Craig wasn’t forced to resign or anything. And that’s just current (or recent) GOP senators.

Again, breathtakingly ignorant claims here. You can do better (I think). Maybe take a deep breath first, or something.

Nobody seems to have noticed Haley’s very careful wording that she has been 100% faithful to her husband in 13 years of marriage. My guess from that is that:

    1. She has fooled around with a few people since getting married, Will Folks included – but is hoping there’s no clinching evidence for it.

    2. She fooled around before she was married, but suspects there is clinching evidence for that, hence the wording.

Just Another SC Voter, so what is the “threat” she will use against the General Assembly? Sanfraud was ignored by them. Any and every bill in the US Congress can be roll called if “a sufficient number” ask for it. Does that affect their votes? I doubt it. If it is a vote they are “scared” of they just don’t show up. It is all just eye wash for the public anyway.

Sure the stakes are high for the SC GOP, as things can go badly wrong for them politically. But so far as the running of SC is concerned, can it really get any worse than it already is with peevish Sanford and the imperious legislature? Our governor is possibly the second weakest in the nation, with Texas the contender. And in the other direction, who really could improve things notably from that position? It could be improved a bit by cooperating with the real power, the legislature, but are substantial improvements even possible? How much does it really matter who sleeps on Arsenal Hill? It seems like it can get only a little better and not much worse. Not much range, not much opportunity, not much real risk.

Maybe Will wanted Nikki to leave her husband and marry him. This is understandable if she is kind-hearted. Maybe she thought about it and decided to stay with her husband, whom she really doesn’t love. Maybe Will was crushed. This is all human nature, not rocket science, and is the stuff of bible stories (think David and Bathsheeba) and Shakespearian plays. Two broken hearts, that’s all. Maybe nothing more “sinister” than that.

Will and Marchant were appropriately and legally very careful and vague in alleging ‘inapproiate physical relationship,’ which could mean almost anything, but most people would assume ‘sexual relationship’. One man’s (or 2-3 men’s) ‘inappropriate physical relation’ could mean another man’s ‘hanging out’ or ‘having a good time’.

Maybe meeting at nightclub (and who knows… ‘dirty’ dancing?) with lobbyists and campaign consultants constitutes ‘inappropriate physical relationship’ for some people while it would be accepted as normal behavior for most people, and isnt a proof of anything ‘inappropriate,’ physically or morally.

By the same token, except for a horny teen, anybody would be worn out by frequent 2-3 hours phone sex or phone ‘love’ conversations (at night, no less), but many people have had many hours-long business-related calls at all hours of the day and night.

Those who keep saying that because Nikki didn’t file a lawsuit against Will is a definite proof of her guilt are either dumb or duplicitous and have an agenda to smear her. Both parties a One, lawsuits are long

Both parties here, Nikki and Will, are smart to keep this out of courts. This is about dirty politics and publicity, not courts; it would take too long, be too late and take too much effort better devoted to her political career. The standard of proof for vague and undefined ‘inappropriate physical relationship’ is too high and trying to prove a negative on Nikki’s part would be impossible, especially as there is nothing to win – courts decisions won’t change political opinions or minds. And if she wins primary and Governorship (which I hope she does, seeing as who other candidates, her opponents, are) there’s the legal concept of ‘proving the harm’ – no harm no foul, as they say in other sports. So for the sake of Will, and everybody else, lets hope Nikki wins the primary and, if necessary, the runoff and Governorship, so we all can start getting out of this swamp.

For Nikki, to file a lawsuit just to satisfy a few agenda-driven blog posters would be stupid. When things get to court because of political infighting, it means things have gotten way too far (eg, AG Henry McMaster’s office is currently persecuting Katherine Jenerette’s family for having the moxie to stand up to the Good Ol’ Boys network – Elliott and Brown; McMaster is also running for Governor, if you havent noticed). Abusing legal system to settle political scores is not a proof of virtue, it’s the worst kind of politics.

Either way, voting for Nikki is better and safer than voting for any other candidate in this race, as she is heads and shoulders above any of the morons and/or slimy GOBs running for Gov. She already said that she would resign if any credible evidence of whatever it is we are expecting to be ‘inappropriate physical relationship’ to be, so it will save us from the agony of recall. It’s safest and best way to start cleaning up the GOBs of slime, corruption and incompetence from Columbia.

Will felt that he was forced to come out with ‘inappropriate relationship’ for sake of his family life and, to that extent, did the minimum possible. After initial kneejerk reaction from her consultants, Nikki seems to be trying to do the same, and let ‘controvercy’ die. Let’s leave it at that, and out of courts, which don’t decide the truth but are used as weapons against political enemies.

What’s up with all this southern chivalry BS? We’re not talking about the produce manager of the local Piggly Wiggly calling out the married local librarian he’s been schtupping for the last year. This is about a person running for elected office who is basing their campaign in part on the need for transparency and in the support of conservative family values. You have two seedy political operatives that thrive on attention and appear to enjoy swimming in the cesspool of South Carolina politics — and then you have a politician who apparently believes transparency applies to everybody else and has placed herself above reproach. None of these people look clean to me and I hope the liar (or liars) loses their ass when the truth finally comes out.

I was banned from posting on The State because I got people too interested. I wonder if they will now let me post one more: I TOLD YOU SO!
If they don’t, I hope my thread friends ColaGameCock, PhilRose, and others see this before it is taken out. Otherwise, please look for it in other media threads on the subject.
I may be the only one in South Carolina who actually printed the Columbia Police Department (CPD) supposed 218 “investigation” AND READ IT ALL.
I hope it is still on the web after I highlight the scandals in it.
I may also be the only one who noticed that Tandy Carter apparently had his secret grievance hearing on Thursday afternoon and that he went to City Hall in his Police Chief uniform, gun at his side and all.
I saw him across the street; and that is impersonating a police officer if you ask me because he was releived of his duties “effective immediately” weeks ago.
Noelle Phillips should have noted in the report that South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) immediately e-mailed Interim Chief Burke boasting that they refused to answer Noelle’s questions except by giving her a copy of the accident investigation manual, as if she could not have gotten it otherwise.
But that is not the only scandal.
I complained that Tandy Carter had sent EIGHT CPD units to the collision site. I was wrong, he had sent TEN. Their names are in the report.
Not one of the ten interviewed the witnesses on the scene or took a statement from them.
Not one of them took a statement from Benjamin even though one of the first two officers on the scene was instructed to “stand by” Benjamin, apparently holding his hand, until relieved by another officer whose duty it was to also stand by Benjamin, apparently for continued hand-holding.
In the much fanfared Benjamin visit to CPD metro station in early May, and I kid you not, all that happened is that Benjamin and his lawyer, Solomon (of Gergel, yes Gerge, Nickles and Solomon) were “offered bottled water and accepted it.”
They were also offered written question, and took them unanswered and left with no promise to answer them any time soon.
That Sgt Modica, who stood behind Tandy Carter in his supposed Friday, 23 April 2010, supposed “press conference” and heard himself described by Tandy Carter as “by far the best” blah, blah. blah, HAD DONE NOTHING AT ALL.
Then when two officers were later assigned full time to the supposed investigation, they did not return to the collision site to try to calculate the speed until after it was clear the Benjamin will continue to refuse to tell CPD whether he was speeding or not.
They still did not calculate the speed, and according to WIS’s report of what COP spokesman Brick Lewis said, “the investigation is complete.”
“Complete” MY FOOT. It was not even begun.
Even after SC’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) noted specifically that the speeds were not calculated and must be, the CPD is either too lazy or to incompetent to do so.
Folks, that’s not the only glaring scandal.
Benjamin said he was in the left lane. CPD figured the collision occurred in the right lane.
The State House video, posted on The State, shows him without headlight on and also weaving from lane to lane.
The CPD report also claims Benjamin’s lights were in the “on position” even though all witnesses said his lights were off.
There is more if they will let me post it, God willing.
    To be Continued, God willing.

The reality is Fouckls, unless you can prove your fantasies, then Darlin Nikki with be the nominee. And if she thinks it’s been rough so far, wait until the liberals in the AP and elsewhere launch a full assault after she challenges one of their own liberals in the Democratic party.

Hear me now and believe me later, regardless of the outcome Tuesday, Fouclks has put a Spendocrat, one who admits he will gargle Obama’s balls (like Larry Sinclair), in the governors mansion…Governor Sheehan.

With this much blood in the water the Democratic sharks from outside South Carolina are going to pour so much $$$ into the Dem campaign that Haley will have to auction her used panties off on Ebay just to keep up.

Current direction of the South Carolina GOP = Dumb
    Nominating Nikky Haley = Dumber

Karen Floyd is just an “AWESOME” party leader, huh? And if you believe that, I have an oyster bed in Louisiana that I swear the oil spill isn’t going to affect — I’d like to sell it to you.

If I’m the Dem opposition in just about any race, I’m loving the fact that I’ll have to spend zero dollars on opposition research (just pay enough to have that hallway tape out of the hotel in SLC surface, and bargain with Knotts for enough $$$ into his next campaign to keep him in that chair — so I can get “the picture”) — the Republicans are doing all my opposition research for me.

Sorry Will, but the fidelity issue revolves around honesty and deception. The reason it mattered with Bill Clinton was that he could be that dishonest with those closest to him. The reason it matters with anyone that we put in office is because we must trust them. If they can be that dishonest with the people closest to them then they sure as hell won’t miss any sleep lying to me about things that matter to my family and friends. I get it. Although I am not sure exactly what happened between the 2 of you it is apparent that something inappropriate took place and that isn’t telling the truth. I’d have more respect if she would just come and say that something happened, she and her husband have worked through it and let’s move on.

This way the reputable journalists can’t come out with it, and Folks gets dismissed. It is so obvious to be ridiculous. Folks will never put out anything that might actually damage Haley. “So where is the “breaking story” that Bauer passed a polygraph last night in Columbia?”

There are many good resons why polygraphs are inadmissible in a court of law, the best of them is that they are notoriously unreliable, another is that they are subjective to the interpretations and qualifications of the people giving the test. Polygraph reliability is described to be a ‘little better than chance’. Polygraphs might measure the level of anxiety, but almost anybody (except maybe professional liars or those who took the training or common anti-anxiety medicine to ‘beat the polygraph’) taking a test would have some level of anxiety. So, if Andre passed the test, which one of the above is he?

There are much better physiological methods than polygraphs to test for truthfulness, but none is 100% reliable. Polygraph tests are just as useless as filing frivolous political lawsuits as a ‘proof’ of someone’s guilt or innocence.

If we want to rely on polygraph, why don’t we subject everybody who runs for political office to polygraphs, why only the accusations of ‘physical relationships’ deserve such treatment? Wouldn’t we want to know if all our politicians are honest, or at least not completely corrupt, before we elect them? Lets make the test mandatory for all running for office, and then fire away.

Will they tan at Myrtle? How bout those expensive homes on the beach overlooking an oil slick? What about the shrimp festival at McClellanville? Think about it.

The late Hunter S Thompson once wrote “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro”. As is my custom, I am again awake at 3:30 AM and am beginning yet another day of retirement from a SC State Agency that will almost certainly benefit by the removal of its Director as a result of a new executive administration. I had hoped to see a McMaster/Sheheen campaign and sadly all the indicators still continue to show that to be unlikely though the polls have as of yet to open. Thus, I can still hope. In Marine Corps boot camp I was once told by a Drill Instructor to “Wish in one hand and shit in the other then see which one fills up the fastest”. My POD today is to vote for McMaster then go donate blood (the Red Cross called and caught me during a weak moment and I have a rare blood type or so they tell me). From there I shall hop back on my Harley and tool around the back country roads of Clarendon County. Finally my rear end will be parked in front of the TV awaiting the results which seem very important to me now but may mean less as time passes. I sincerely hope all of the commentaries and their authors find their way to the polls as well. If nothing else, this entire debate may have the effect of generating greater electorate participation. I believe its still state law that no alcohol be sold on election day. I don’t drink but I hope that some of you do as it would at least provide an excuse for what you write. Then again, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro”.
