By FITSNews || Just when it seemed the Will Folks-Nikki Haley affair story had died down, along comes S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford to Haley’s, um, “rescue.” After a calm Memorial Day weekend, Sanford reignited the smoldering scandal on Tuesday when he told reporters that he didn’t believe Folks’ claim to have engaged in an “inappropriate physical relationship” with the front-running GOP candidate.
Instant headlines ensued.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says an allegation against a Republican gubernatorial candidate by a Columbia blogger who also was his first press secretary is an evil brand of politics as usual.
Sanford said Tuesday he doesn’t believe blogger Will Folks’s claim that he had an inappropriate physical relationship with Nikki Haley.
Sanford, who saw his political prospects destroyed after disappearing for days last year and admitting to an affair with an Argentine woman, says it’s the silly season in politics with primaries next Tuesday.
Wow … way to go, Sanford.
Just when “Haley-gate” had dropped off the front page …
As it stands now, Folks has presented just enough evidence – including text messages that hint at a cover-up by the Haley campaign as well as phone logs showing dozens of late night calls between him and Haley – to lend plausibility to his initial claim. Of course, he hasn’t produced anything capable of sinking the Haley ship (which, it should be noted, he has spent the better part of three years promoting on this website).
At least not yet.
So … what happens next?

Pretty sad will. I think most of us have figured you out. Of course you won’t be discussing any details, or any specifics..
Because the moment you get specific with some real facts, you can be proven to be lying. So far all you have really claimed is you touched Haley some time in 2007, THAT’S IT. That’s your entire case.
Because when you give us a specific, a date, a location, a place then you know facts such as those can be checked and refuted, that’s the only reasn to be so vague.
You haven’t seen haley’s records, although you’ve begged for them to be released. You just can’t pick a date out of thin air, what if she was out of town, what if records prove she couldn’t possible have been where you claim that day, that hour, etc.
Vagueness works for a while, put at some point to be believed, you’ll need specifics, but you need Haley’s records for that…no wonder you’ve obsessed over her releasing them.

Granted, this is an odd thing to do. But Sanford is not known, at least recently, to be making sound political decisions.
On a somewhat different subject, I am curious as to why Folks has not produced more evidence of the claimed affair.
It seems to me that his fear of losing credibility has already happened. Among many conservatives he is seen as a traitor, sell-out or flake. Even if he manages to nail Haley, in the political sense this time, he won’t win any friends on the left. As his blog is primarily of interest to those people right-of-center, how does he see this as anything other than a professional disaster?
IMO, the only way he can hope to regain some credibility on – even if not repair political friendships – is to issue unambiguous evidence of Nikki’s… hikes on the Appalachian Trail.

Something about this Folks/Haley story is missing. Who twisted Folks’ arm and where is the proof? Why did he break the story without breaking the story?
I don’t think I would want Sanford in my court if I were Haley and even though FitNews claims to have supported Haley for the past three years……. Folks is the last person on earth who I would want to be endorsing me.
I have lived here for 5 years now. I was thrilled when I ran across this news site and now, well, to say the least….not so much.
This is the story that isn’t a story just a bad way to ruin two people’s reputation for an unworthy cause. If that was your intent…well maybe you accomplished your goal.
Hopefully, something of value will pop up in the news so this site can add something of value, soon. Or maybe we will all decide it isn’t worth taking a glance at on a daily basis.

You keep saying you were “pressured” to admit to your “inappropriate physical relationship” (whatever THAT means), but you’ve yet to say who pressured you, and HOW you were pressured. If the only thing they held over your head was a threat to release the story… how have you saved yourself (or Haley) from that fate? You haven’t. You’ve simply made it worse than it would ever have been otherwise. No, I can only conclude that you have been paid to do this… and paid BIG. Even is it’s all true, what kind of a man does that to a woman who has been, at the very least, a friend and valued colleague? You have no honor.

Nikki Haley can settle all this herself. She has claimed that the 2-3 hour late-night-into-early-morning phone calls between her and Will Folks were work-related conversations (I know, I know, stop laughing). She said she works around the clock. All hours. Anyone who knows her knows that.
All she has to do is to release her phone records from that same period that shows the phone calls from any of her other “24-hour worker bees.”
Or, better yet, maybe one of these worker-bee friends of hers who also talked to her at all hours (like she does, she says), could release their phone records of their after-hours work-related calls to Nikki.
Hey, maybe Mark Sanford has been on the phone with her at all hours! Wouldn’t THAT be precious.

Nikki beat this one back pretty effectively.
I think where Folks made his error is that he assumed the mainstream media would follow the thread he gave them. But he should have learned with the John Edwards story, these days you have to give the mainstream press a scandal fully packaged and proven before they’ll touch it. This bunch of modern journalists could never have broken Watergate.
I initially thought Haley sticking to her guns was a risky strategy, but it apparently has worked. She’s the next SC governor, unless I miss my guess, and Will Folks has torched what reputation he had for nothing.

Which ever it may be, this web site has made national news. How brilliant. I believe Willie has already thought this out strategically well. Sanford’s beliefs on this subject are funny. First, he knows more than this statement implies. Second, Nikki has asked him to cover for her. ( I think she could have info on him if he doesn’t do her bidding.) I know there are people in SC that are very conservative, but please sit back a second and consider the mess Sanford put us in, and the way Haley is dodging all the questions. It all adds up to her inappropriate behaviors and we do not need this any longer. I would love to see a photo, but I don’t need one. I can read, and I can add. Haley is not the person for the job. How ashamed do we have to be before we give up “overlooking” what is right in front of us?

It was a chore but in the interest of being informed I watched the debate…I have to say that of those four candidates, the only one not a complete yahoo is Nikki Haley. Gresham Barrett said that character does matter, and Andre Bauer said that he doubted if there was anything bad in his life left to uncover, it had all been uncovered already. Pretty funny in spots, maybe not meant to be…seems to me that Nikki Haley is the only option the Republicans have this time around. And I think Sheheen can beat her.

I call for Nikki to release her personal phone and computer records. I also call for the release of work phone records ( I know the card she plays on this one, but if one is innocent, why resist?). I call for the highest legal authority to require this. If she has nothing to hide, then why not comply? Ask yourself that one question. How does it make her look to withhold? Can we trust her? Isn’t lying to cover up her behavior worse than the behavior? Release the records, Nikki. Only way to get a thinking person’s vote. Unless you are counting on votes from those who refuse to think on their own?

Haley is the one at issue here. Folks alleges an affair with Haley, and released phone records with over 700 calls, many of them in the period of the alleged affair, that showed many 2-3 hour phone conversations from late in the evening into early morning, one as late as 5 am!
SHE explained that very strong evidence of a possible affair by stating that SHE often conducted business during such hours. The onus is on Nikki Haley to prove that explanation of HER suspicious behavior, behavior by a married woman that indicates an affair was taking place as Folks alleged.
So, why doesn’t she prove the veracity of her statement by pointing out others who she works with at all hours of the day and night?
What does Folks’ other calls have to do with anything? We’re talking about Haley’s self-tendered “explanation” that nobody who is married really believes.

All of you Nikki Haley apologists who are thinking the story is “fizzling out” because there hasn’t been a bombshell for a few days now, are just wishful thinking.
Reporters from the mainstream media are on this. You can bet on it. It often takes a longer than that to bring a story to light in the press. Look at Watergate. Look at Iran-Contra. Look at the Clinton-Lewinsky affair. These stories developed over months and months.
Will Folks has cast doubt on Nikki Haley by refuting her original push-backs with evidence that contradicted her statements. He also says that he is sitting on more evidence. You really can’t think the press is ignoring this and passing on an opportunity to maybe get the scoop from Will.
You can also bet they are investigating leads to impeach Will Folks’ story and evidence as well. Folks says he’s got the goods, and I find no reason to doubt him as yet. Your childish impatience is not a reason. As a Democrat, I hope nothing substantial breaks until after the primary and Nikki Haley is the Republican nominee. I’m delighted to wait it out and have people like Mark Sanford (!?!) work to beat back the inevitable truth of the matter. And the truth will out on this, you can bet on it.

It’s pretty obvious. A reliable source was going to come out with it, so Folks and Haley decide that he will come out with it since he is not even remotely credible. The story is going to get out, so they get it out in the best way for them. Folks was not lieing that he planned it with the Haley camp. Folks will never, ever offer any real proof, and that was the plan all along. Now the story will go away and no one else will follow it up.

The system, under the Constitution, means innocent people should not be dragged through the horrible ordeal of a trial TWICE and sit staring at the death penalty or long incarceration.
The system requires prosecutors to do their homework before prosecuting people willy-nilly.

something is missing from this whole story…
sic willie, like others have said here, you’ve painted yourself into a corner. regardless of whatever evidence “they” had initially (a picture, i guess), you’ve gone ahead and done enough damage to discredit yourself, probably permanently, in your town, with your neighbors, peers and support system in the sc state political arena, and, yet, at the same time, you’re not forthcoming with enough substantive proof (which would seem to be easy enough, if what you claim is true) to bolster your very circumstantial case thus far. decent stuff (phone logs and text, especially given validation from the haley camp), no doubt, but also no smoking gun, no juicy fact, no date certain, location, position (sorry, couldn’t resist)…
and, nobody in their right mind would do that for some short term bump in ad revenue. the idea of you being in cahoots with haley to get out in front of this thing would have kept you from releasing anything more than your original assertion (ie – sans phone and text records, etc.), making a plausible denial on her part more credible.
so i admit, i’m confused. what’s missing? don’t let us down, folks.

Haley is not at issue at all, Will Folks is because he has made a claim and then provided ZERO evidence to back up the claim. If he claimed they had engaged in phone calls, his phone records would be evidence, but he claimed they had a PHYSICAL relationship, for which he has provided nothing.

So the new operating theory is that Jake Knotts was the person who originally hired a PI to track down our boy Will b/c he considered him a “political enemy”. So does that mean that Knotts owns the incriminating photo? If so, he could release the photo, sink Haley’s campaign–or hold on to it and be Nikki’s “savior”–in effect, by controlling the photo and controlling her. Sure he’s promised his support to others in the race but he’s not a complete idiot–he’s read the tea leaves and realizes Haley is ahead in this game and remembers that old adage–the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Ahh, Folks story continues to unravel. Still no story and no evidence from a mainstream news organization Folks claimedhad evidence and was hot on the story.
Even the FRee Times admits they were duped and their lawyers told them not to run the story because it turns out their sources source, was Folks himself, once again.

On his website, Folks insinuates the Columbia Free-Times newspaper was about to break a story about his affair with Haley, and indeed the newspaper itself has admitted one of its reporters did investigate such a rumor. But according to one knowledgeable source, while a Free-Times reporter did talk to Folks on May 13, no story was ever budgeted to run that week.
The reason? The Daily Caller has learned that around the time Sarah Palin endorsed Haley at a Columbia rally, an attorney for the paper advised editors not to run the story because the paper only had one source alleging the affair.
Folks did not return messages from The Daily Caller left on his cell phone and sent to his e-mail address asking him to name the news outlet that he says pressured him. But his blog mentioned last week that reporter Jim Davenport, the senior statehouse reporter in Columbia of the Associated Press, was also looking into the story.
“The short answer is no,” said spokesman Jack Stokes, when asked if Folks reacted to a potential story from the AP.

Paris, let’s just agree to disagree on this issue. Apparently you’re not willing to budge.
Let’s see if we an find common ground. This is not the first instance where Will Folks and a women disagreed vehemently regarding physical contact. I would think reviewing a previous case could shed some light on the current case.
Will Folks was accused of physically assaulting a women in 2005. In that case, he claimed it didn’t happen, she claimed it did. He claimed innocence and was under no obligation to provide any evidence in his defense – and indeed he provided no evidence.
But when it came down to showing up in court and being put under oath – all the sudden, Will Folks story changed. Turns out he pled guilty and admitted to a physical altercation he had previously denied.
In fact in that case, the women also remained silent on the issue, just like Haley has. Now I suppose you would attack that women as a liar for remaining silent?
Now an easy two questions for you:
1. Did you believe Will Folks when he said he didn’t do it, or did you believe him when he admitted it, or both?
2. Do you believe, as any rationale person would, that this sheds some light on the type of person we are attempting to judge on truthfulness.
Interestingly, the womens lawyer said this: “Like all men charged with beating up women, Folks will come to a day of accountability. When that day arrives, the victim will testify truthfully and fully about the matter. She does not intend to try the case in the media.”
Would you attack her like your attacking Haley for not ‘trying this case in the media’?

The wailings of people in these comments sections are also pretty funny. They amount to, effectively, You MUST MUST MUST release all the evidence you have now, in the next ten minutes, because they are simply DESTROYING you over on a blog I visit occasionally and that has three other visitors and if you don’t Imight implode and well, you must or it isn’t true, you sociopathic lying scumbag, it’s not true, it can’t be, someone paid you, where’s the dress, where’s the video, release everything now or because I say so the story will vanish…
Folks clearly had a relationship with Haley. I don’t think he has a videotape of it, but I think he has a lot of documentary evidence, some of which he has already produced and which has been confirmed as genuiine by Haley’s campaign. They’ve tried to explain away the reasons for it, very unconvincingly, I think – why on earth would her campaign manager be discussing a ‘new photo’ if he knew nothing about the affair and didn’t believe there had been one – but that will become more and more difficult. Sure, it won’t look good for Folks if he carries on dripping the information out. It hasn’t so far. So what? He’s hardly the issue. The story is a gubernorial candidate who is claiming to be a family values conservative, but is both a hypocrite and a liar. Folks ain’t running for office. I think he will bring out more emails and other stuff, and people will keep wailing it’s not DNA evidence and Haley is innocent for a while. But after a while it will just become too obvious, even to the lame media, that this happened, and pressure will intensify on Haley to the extent that she will issue a statement regretting what happened. I suspect she will claim it didn’t constitute infidelity.
There’s no way those text messages – confirmed by Haley’s campaign – can mean anything other than that something happened between Haley and Folks, and Haley’s campaign manager knew about it. It’s just going to be about how convincing the remaining evidence is. Expecting a tape or something of that nature is naive – the lack of a tape doesn’t mean there was no affair. It will all be about how damning the wording is in Haley’s emails, I suspect. They don’t seem to have been too careful, though.

I can tell you what happens next provided nothing of any specific substance is added. Proviided Haley holds her lead as does Sheheen the Republicans go down in flames in the Statewide General Election. So, for all the passion both pro and con, the result is a center/left Governor who might very well serve two terms. If however either Folks produces a real smoking gun or Haley drops out, then perhaps McMaster can give Sheheen a real run for his money. One thing is ccertain, Haley cannot and will not beat Sheheen and her ability to chase new business away from SC will only inflate an already poor image SC unfortunately is burdened with. Of course Haley won’t drop out, clearly she’s delusional and has crossed the line of believing her own BS so its up to Folks to either put up or shut up and do so now because any other timing for the sake of future financial gain makes him a slime ball of the first order. If she wins and he writes the tell all its too bad both can’t be ridden out on a rail. At least Sanford came clean. Its way past time for one or both of the principals in this mess to do likewise. And, for the record, Jenny’s book was awful.

The fact that “…62 percent of likely Republican primary voters approved of Sanford’s performance…” according to a Rasmussen poll last month (May, 2010) indicates just how far “gone” the GOP in South Carolina is.
Marky-Mark Sanford who without question brought shame to the Governor’s office is probably also one of the WORST governors in the State of South Carolina history. To say that Sanford was an “odd duck” anyway is putting it mildly. His TOTAL unwillingness to work with the legislature, his quest for a dictatorship, etc. aside, he almost single-handedly helped destroy the educational system in this state as well as knot the DOT up to the point that unraveling it and his involvement in “pet” projects (his buddy Ravenel’s bridge) will take forever. I have personal knowledge of his trying to keep ICAR out of the Upstate by threatening the mayor of Greenville. His hatred for the Upstate and Horry County is legendary. Sanford is a total POS.
Yet the GOP in this state literally still IDOLIZES him en masse. The self-righteous, and “good” upstanding GOP — they are as fraudulent as Sanford is and as big of frauds as their new IDOL – Nikki Haley.
They all deserve each other and deserve to go down in November. I hope they are delusional and stupid enough to nominate Haley. It will bode very well for your next Governor, Vincent Sheehen. He’ll kill the fraud/liar Haley in a landslide. Go ahead, PLEASE nominate her!

I appreciate that you are trying to find common ground for agreement here.
Basically, I don’t have an opinion one way or another re the issue re Folks that you bring up. I know nothing about him or his past, and I only looked at this blog for the first time last week when all this broke about Nikki Haley and him.
But what I can say about that is that it is irrelevant to this particular issue whether or not he was lying or not or acted responsibly or not regarding the case you brought up. And it is especially irrelevant what I think or believe one way or another.
Here’s why.
The “case” of the veracity of the alleged Folks/Haley affair, and my beliefs surrounding the truth of the matter are not based in Folks’ history in any way. I have no insight on that. When I first read of his allegations, I thought it was ironic and funny in a hypocrite-kind-of-way if what he said was true. I also was tickled in a right-winger-attacks-another-right-winger sort of way.
But at the time (and still to a certain extent) have NO idea or personal knowledge (of course) whether there was a provable sexual affair that occurred as alleged by Folks. Then the responses to the “He Said – She Said” matter began. As you have noted my consistency on this, Haley unequivocally denied any involvement with Folks other than a working relationship, and her campaign said that they had not inkling that Folks was going to make these charges.
Folks then released physical, verified evidence that supports his allegation, and proved both of Haley’s claims above to be untrue. Haley also has evidence available to her (phone records, e-mail and text transcripts), that could answer the questions raised by Folks’ evidence, but she will not do so.
All of these things indicate evidence of some level of guilt on Haley’s part. Again, I think it will all come out in due time, and my snarky, chiding aside, it is praiseworthy in its way, that you continue to stand by the person you admire absent “smoking gun” proof. But the fact that you continue to deny that solid evidence was tendered in support of Folks’ allegation, and also deny that Nikki Haley and her campaign are both being, at best, disingenuous and unresponsive (hoping it will just go away), is not so admirable.

You should release what you have. People have lost interest in your dole it out a tidbit at a time game. You lost all momentum by allowing the holiday weekend and the debate pass without anything new. It was obvious last week that she wasn’t going to admit to anything without you showing all your cards. It may now be too late to show them and have them have any impact on the primary. Or perhaps you’ve decided to save it, hoping she wins the primary, and use your info closer to November. My opinion is that by November, people will have forgotten and won’t care because what they’ll remember is you had a lot of sizzle, but you never gave them any steak.

Whether Andre Bauer is involved is questionable for me. My opinion is: No. He’s not a “good ole boy” (rules that stinkin’ Senate out-of-order down there about every chance he gets). I honestly don’t think they like him any better than Haley if the truth be known. I think if Bauer was ahead in the polls you would have seen the same sort of shenanigans from almost that exactly same crowd.
I do think they would like to see McMaster win because they would be almost absolutely guaranteed “business as usual” then for at least four more years. “Hawwnnrry” is very unlikely to upset their apple cart down there.

Perhaps she is the most brilliant of all the bunch & just letting everyone cut their own throats, Folks included, while they expose themselves & the dirt in SC politics.
While I don’t usually buy into conspiracy theories, a couple of people have pointed out the lack of physical evidence concerning Chapur. Perhaps the evidence was kept under wraps but something about it doesn’t add up. Like with this Haley/Folks thing.

The exchanges between TRM and PS are fascinating to say the least. One thing is for sure, and that is that PS has A LOT of time on his hands. Holy crap, even a cursory Google search of “Paris Sailin” unearths hundreds of comments on Politico, Slate, ABC News and so on. Is there some kind of therapy for being addicted to chat rooms? Hey, did you google “Mike” and see how many hits you got??
I got a long way to go to catch up to you, man. LOL
Is there some kind of therapy for being addicted to sports? Lots of people are, you know. And I don’t mean participating in them to any extent like I participate in my “sport.”
And, yes, I have plenty of time on my hands sometimes (like now), and during large parts of that time, I like to write and comment on political news. I find it fun! Other times I am one of the top sales people in my field and I travel all around the country for my job, laptop in tow (often I am in hotel rooms with nothing to do after my calls – BOO!).
Some people like to play video games, watch TV for hours, eat fatty foods, or hike the Appalachian Trail for fun during their free time. You?
And a big so what? At least my obsession often provides entertainment and stimulation to me (and others) and involves some intellectual and writing ability. Things also change all the time. Different issues every day. Gotta keep up. Gotta keep up.

Paris, please follow the same rules you set for Haley. A claim has been made, regardless how ridiculous and lacking in evidence, its up to you to prove its not true, otherwise, your guilty.

Pops – How many times are you going to say the same incorrect thing? Will Folks’ claim of an inappropriate affair is not “without evidence.” The evidence is the phone records showing hundreds of calls including numerous 2-3 hour late-night-into-early morning conversations between Folks and Haley.
This evidence supports Folks contention that there was an inappropriate affair going on with the two of them.
You might not find the evidence compelling, or you might not find the evidence stands up to Haley’s explanation, but to say it is “not evidence” is wrong. You seem like a nice man. Please tell me that you understand that.
Nikki Haley has even confirmed the veracity of this phone call evidence by “explaining” it. She says these calls were work-related, that it is her management style to talk with her employees at all times, even if they call her at 3:00 in the morning and talk with her until 5:00 in the morning.
That’s what she said, Pops. I didn’t say it. You believe her explanation. I find it questionable, at best.
This does not compare in any way to any baseless accusations about me designed to move the conversation somewhere else. The only point that El Foldo made was to help show the difference between baseless accusations pulled out of one’s orifice, and accusations backed by solid third-party evidence.

Mike – I am celebrating my 43rd year in my profession, I haven’t always been in sales, I’ve also been in purchasing, but I’ve been in sales for the last 22 years.
Why is that hard to believe? Here’s how my work day (at home) went today. I got up and after I made coffee, took out our six dogs, fed the wild birds, and fed our five cats (all of them strays), I got on the computer at about 7 am. I had about 10 e-mails relating to warehouse (in-stock) issues, from brokers (I manage our network around the country), and from our customer service rep (who I manage remotely), our manufacturing facility is in Wisconsin.
I also had three proposals to write as followup to corporate headquarters sales calls that I made in Seattle and Atlanta within the last few weeks.
As you know, I am following this issue, so I called up Fit News onto my desktop, maybe I read it and posted, I don’t remember. Anyhow, I would answer an e-mail, look at Fit News and post. Make a phone call, look at Fit News and post. I wrote a proposal (not a long one), looked at Fit News and commented, on and on until now (I stopped working about an hour and a half ago).
You get the picture. I like to break up my day by posting on whatever political issue I’m following at the time. These two weeks, it’s you. Next week (especially if this story dries up), I’ll be somewhere else.
Again, it’s fun for me. It’s my routine and I enjoy it. And, sorry, I’m in sales.

After all, it’s politicians we’re talking about and if Washington is any indication, leaders in the two parties are often more chummy and collude to defraud the country while we beat ourselves senseless arguing on their behalf.

I totally agree with you, William. If our anonymity was shed off, will people be crucifying Nikki the way they are doing? For heaven’s sake, she is a mother as well as a wife. What possibly can drive men, who even if the claims were true, to seek to tarnish her image and family by supposedly ‘confessing’? And we are to believe this, according to some posters, even though these accusers have yet to provide tangible evidence.
This whole issue is going to get a lot more interesting when the primaries are over. I bet that Will Folks will be the first to backtrack and will hide behind “inappropriate physical relationship” as meaning something totally innocuous.

So, does he believe a Sanford/Haley affair? I think I do, and thus he has to stick up for her. Anyway, how would he know? Why does he care? I would like to know what Mr. Haley thinks, now? Ummm, probably not real happy at home. But, of course, he may not want to lose the gravy train.
Will, you can really be a super creepy and mean dude, but I do think you had the affair with Haley. The people that disregard you and Thad and Larry and the others are just plain hiding their head in the sand. They need to go to the Capital and talk to people. Go to a number of media folks and talk to them. Go to some of the state agencies and talk to them. Ask the people who hang around the state house on business. Ask her college friends. Just look at all of her behavior in the past year. Is that who you want for Governor? Good Heavens!
