By FITSNews || Because La Socialista – a.k.a. The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper – literally cannot go a day without gumming* the University of South Carolina and its mediocre athletic programs, Tuesday’s editions included a special report on “Head Ball Coach” (Ol’ Ball Sac) Steve Spurrier’s 65th birthday celebration.
From La Socialista:
Steve Spurrier plans to celebrate his 65th birthday (Tuesday) snorkeling off a coral reef in the Bahamas. In the high-stress world of major-college football, Spurrier has avoided health problems and mental fatigue by finding time for exercise, golf and travel …
… Spurrier works out five to six days a week, maintains a healthy diet and refuses to keep the long hours that often lead to burnout among his peers.
Hmmmm …
Given the consistently mediocre product that Spurrier has produced over the last five seasons, we think Gamecock fans would appreciate it if he put in a few more hours at the office.
Seriously, dude … go snorkeling when you’ve won an SEC title, or at least a spot in the championship game, for crying out loud.
Since arriving in Columbia, Spurrier has registered an 18-22 record against SEC opponents, a 2-3 mark against arch-rival Clemson and a 1-3 bowl record, including January’s humiliating Pizza Bowl loss in Birmingham to Connecticut (yes, the basketball school).
Of course at Underachievement U, that sort of effort gets rewarded with a contract extension.
*Definition of gumming.

What about the best five year record in school history? And you call yourself a fan.

With the exception of Carolina’s baseball and Track & Field programs all our other sports have sucked. Yet Hyman and Pastides refuse to grant a simple one year, no cost extension to Coach Tanner who consistently competes and wins. Another shining example of Carolina Incompetence while rewarding mediocrity!

C’mon AGAIN FITS. Him spending more hours in his office is not going to fix the football program. Is there a causal link that escapes the rest of us? Do you have nothing else to write about today? What about doing some ‘vestigating on the mayor-elect’s accident. This article is ludicrious. You do want to have SOME credibility with your readers, don’t ya?

[The Accident] I hope the Chief of Police doesn’t “lose” (along with Sled’s help) any investigative records like they did when Strom Thurman’s daughter was tragically killed in 5 Points many years ago. But, it is always for the common good.

You know, it just really doesn’t matter who the coach is. After 120 yrs of mediocrity I’d say it’s just time to give up and accept the inevitable. Carolina football will always suck.

Toyota, what happened the 4 yrs before? If you want to compare records go all the way back bud! Every blind squirrel lucks up on a nut every now and then.
