I’m not sure who to vote for yet in the GOP primary for Supt. of Education. All of these candidates speak in code and vague generalities when it comes to the issue of real school choice, which is what I want to see my candidate strongly support.
I’d love to see FITS delve into where the GOP candidates really stand on issues like: across the board tuition tax credits, academic vouchers, tying per-pupil funding to the student wherever he or she decides to go, and using all of these tools as ways to not only provide real choice but to bring about free market competition to the education systems in our state.

Matt:
We disagree w/ her on merit pay, but we were pretty impressed with Payne’s platform …

I have seen Payne speak a few times and I will be voting for her in June. She has actually worked as a teacher in public schools. I’m also impressed with the different what she has accomplished as a teacher
By Andrew April 19, 2010 at 7:13 pm
FITS, what do you think of Nelsen’s platform?
By Ward April 19, 2010 at 7:40 pm
haha at Ard’s votes.
You got your bot blocker down Will?
By Todd April 19, 2010 at 9:00 pm
Really wish you had included a none of the above block. Sheesh.
By Julie April 19, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Ditto ‘Ward’ on Ard’s votes. And haha also on Meilinger. What???
By Alex Hampton April 19, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Somebody needs to teach Zais how to dress. I just looked at pictures on his Facebook group (which has 106 members)and he has both buttons on a two button jacket buttoned along with some of the most atrocious ties I have ever seen. I guess Ragley couldn’t hire a fashion consultant or buy new clothes with the paltry $12,000 Zais has in the bank.
By Barbara April 19, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Bill Connor is an honorable man, a military man, a hero.
My vote is with Bill Connor for Lt. Gov.
By Trisha April 19, 2010 at 11:37 pm
As a former teacher, Kelly Payne has my vote for state superintendant. I have to say I relish the payback if Nikki gets the governor’s seat. All those chairs of committees that they took away from her when she put forth H3047. It would be true justice. Go Nikki!
By hakeem April 20, 2010 at 12:00 am
can we get a none of the above on the GOP Education Race?
By A person that knows April 20, 2010 at 12:18 am
When you see the names on the ballot like this, it makes the choices seem easy. As for the Superintendent race, Kelly Payne is the only choice. She has been in the forfront on the issues and has crafted the issues for the race. Her opponents follow her lead and try to steal her issues. As for school choice, she is the only one in the race that has consistently said she is for total school choice. Her opponents base their answer on which audience they are speaking to.
By Ellen April 20, 2010 at 2:47 am
Payne’s platform is the best I’ve seen. I have seen he a few time and in talking to her she is a person like you or me. She is a common sense person not looking to make a life out of being in office, just wants the best for the our children.
Also seen Josoph Caplinger running for state house dist. 102, we have not had a GOP candidate out here in some time. He to is a common sense guy. It’s is time to see common sense return to our state.
Both have a website and can be found on facebook. They will also reply to any questions you send them.

By Gerri McDaniel April 20, 2010 at 8:31 am
Nikki Haley all the way…. Bill Connor ….. and Kelly Payne is needed for our children.
By David in TR April 20, 2010 at 9:39 am
Alex Hampton,
I hope you are not supporting Kelly “Ohhh Richard” Payne based on the way she dresses since you made comments about the way Zais dresses. I mean really, Kelly Payne dresses like she should be paid by the hour for her services. I wonder if she charges $5K like Ashley Dupre? They look similar in my book.
By ??? April 20, 2010 at 9:53 am
Who is Glenn Price? Is that a real person?
By Chuck Wolverton April 20, 2010 at 10:59 am
I have asked three of the major candidates about marijuana legalization thus far. I am waiting for their responses before I make my decision. Maybe all of you can ask too.
By Greek April 20, 2010 at 11:02 am
I bet bolchoz had his daughter get her sorority sisters to vote. I mean who the heck supports him? Leighton and Alan have a ton of support statewide, bolchoz is a joke!
By Jay B. April 20, 2010 at 11:20 am
I agree with Matt. Free-market school system is the answer to our failing system in this state. As always holds true in the business world, any and everything ran by the government is wasteful, and increasingly unsucessful. Forthose who do not agree, please, go by the post office this afternoon and enjoy your pleasant encounter and lightning fast service! Andre Bauer has the correct vision, insight, and know-how to fix this broken system that has been spinning its wheels for decades and traveling in circles wasting countless tax dollars with nothing to show but embarassing test scores. Andre has the backbone to actually make tough decisions that others fear will poise them in the oh so dreadful light of being “politicallyincorrect”. Political Correctness is the root of the destrcution of this state and this country, tough decisions are not being made because of the toddler-like attitudes of liberal minded individuals. With the election of Andre, we will see actual progress in this state!!!
By Scooter April 20, 2010 at 11:21 am
Nikki Haley and Kelly Payne would both send our state even further backwards than we already have been thrown. Dear Heavens, can’t we find someone who is progressive in this state? I am sick of the backwards thinking and programs and plans that hold back the less rich in our state. Not sure who is voting in this poll. There are some pretty self absorbed people leading in a few of the above poll. People that if elected, would cripple this state.
By Shannon April 20, 2010 at 11:47 am
I can’t believe Ken Ard’s poll votes is so high. The poll votes can’t be his County Council constituents. How can he run for a State office when he can’t do the County Council office that he currently holds? His constituents still can’t get him on the phone. Ken Ard is full of empty promises.
By Scooter April 20, 2010 at 11:59 am
Well, poll is changing! Whew! Still have one race listed that is scary bad! People, check out new comers on the political scene before falling for TV and print ads. Watch out for evil doers. I did not think Nikki or Kelly would be good for SC, and wondered who on earth thought so.
By FunkyChicken April 20, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I really liked Kelly Payne until she was discovered to be a whore. I will not be supporting Payne or Eckstrom.
By nancy corbin April 20, 2010 at 12:48 pm
If you have not heard Gary Burgess, candidate for Supt of Edu, speak check him out. I had made up my mind until I heard him and now support him whole heartedly. Here is a man with experience from the classroom to the County Supt position and a great measure of common sense. He gave down to earth answers on what needs to be done to improve our education system.
By Jeff April 20, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Shannon,
Rest assured those aren’t real number. Ken Ard hasn’t received that many votes in all the other polls combine.
Be interesting to see what bot or other means Katie and Robert Cahaly used to do this.
Imagine that. The Cahaly Clowns misleading the voters.
shocking…
By hakeem April 20, 2010 at 1:21 pm
How are any of our GOP candidates going to do anything when they have NO MONEY. seriously.
By Andrew April 20, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Payne has had opposite positions on private school vouchers in the last couple of months, so I have no idea where she stands.
By Linda April 20, 2010 at 2:23 pm
I’m voting for someone for Supt of Education (Zais) who I feel will definitely work to get our kids educated to go out into the workforce or on to college when they leave High School. Haven’t made up my mine for Governor (do like Nikki and Gresham), Lt Governor (like Ard and Connors), or Atty General (all three seem to be pretty good candidates).
By beetrave April 20, 2010 at 2:26 pm
I am voting for Andre Bauer because his crazy statements and private life will continue to make SC Republicans the laughingstock of the nation. A vote for Bauer is a vote for continuity in government.
On a more serious note, I think Payne looks pretty good. I agree with her that we need to focus on how to educate students who will not attend college or who will stop with a two-year technical degree. These students get shortchanged in many of our high schools. Of course, making improvements in these areas will mean spending real money on facilities beyond an outdated wood shop.
By Lisa Callihan April 20, 2010 at 2:54 pm
I met Andre Bauer seven years ago in an economic interest focused meeting held in Columbia. I found him to be intelligent, warm, & energetic. His conversation focused upon international trade. Our future governor should be a powerhouse channel of business & economic relationship development. Mr. Andre demonstrated a personal awareness of our need to engage the interest of every possible foreign or domestic direct investment entity in the vast number of quality South Carolina manufactured products, services, intellectual products, and workforce strengths. Andre Bauer will positively represent the strengths of our state’s innovation, technology, and human resources to the nation and the world.
By TJ April 20, 2010 at 3:14 pm
I voted for Ard because according to Ward..err…Jeff, he’s got bots.
Dunno what bots are but they sound pretty cool. I wanna get me some bots.
By Cate Owen April 20, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Andre Bauer —- Is the ONLY candidate with the sense of purpose, work ethic and drive to lead this state forward into prosperity again.
By Jeff April 20, 2010 at 3:41 pm
<<<< is Jeff.
I'm wayyyyy to the right of Ward
By David April 20, 2010 at 3:47 pm
As an educator, I can’t vote for Kelly Payne. It is to fishy that she had an affair with Eckerstrom and then runs for State Ed. Super. Then, claims she doesn’t have political ambitions. Her first degree is in POLITICAL SCIENCE. She is not adding up as true to herself nor to others. So it seems.
By A person that know April 20, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Once again, what evidence is their that Eckstrom and Payne had an affair? There have been no statements, email or otherwise that say they have. Their political opponents are the only ones that have claimed that they had an affair.
By Joe April 20, 2010 at 4:27 pm
Yep Greek, Bolchoz has NOOOOOO support. Just keep thinking that.
By billybopbop April 20, 2010 at 5:57 pm
Bolchoz’ daughter isn’t in a soroity, I would think your frat brothers know that…..and judging by his wins in all these cheesy straw polls I guess your right, he doesn’t have much state wide support….other thatn all the money he has raised from supporters, not banks or families……
By gregory scarbrough April 20, 2010 at 7:04 pm
I am supporting Nikki Haley for Governor for her conservative stance and Alan Wilson for Attorney General. I am looking and doing research on the other races and will also be watching the races for governor and attorney general closely to make my final decision.
By Stupid Stupid Stupid April 20, 2010 at 7:51 pm
did you see all of the Alan Wilson signs around the fairgrounds for the Citadel bbq tonight? Holy hell that’s tacky. I saw them on the way home from class. What is it about wilson’s and their love affair with signs?
By Tim April 20, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Bill Connor is a good man and a proven leader. He’ll bring respect back to the Lt. Goverernor’s office.
By Mary Ann April 20, 2010 at 9:07 pm
Andre’Bauer the only candidate with business savy and he has proved he has leadership skills. He can take a dollar and stretch it as far as my old grandmother, and make do with less and give back as much or more!! That is “thinking” creatively and paving the way for a successful turn around with the economy. Ken Ard for Lt. Governor also because of business background. (I am tired of lawyers with spin coming out both sides of their mouths.) General Zais for Supt. of Education because (someone commented on his suits/ties – what does that have to do with leadership?)he has the military background and educational background. He took a failing college and got the resources to turn it around. We need a man with a business background. That is Zais. That is the dynamics needed for SC to take nothing outstanding and make it into something to be proud of. (As for Kelly Payne, she has NO experience working with big budgets…and we think we have financial problems now??? She needs to get her feet wet being a high school administrator first. Make a difference there, Ms. Payne.)
By McKay April 20, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Connor is far better a choice than Ard or Richter! Hmmmmm wonder where Ards votes are coming from??? makes me think he has a couple of computer freaks in grannys basement at 8 bucks an hour! LOL
By CNChapin April 21, 2010 at 12:16 am
Bauer is a scourge. He is full of crap and only stands for whatever is politically expedient. Furthermore, he pals around with that fat mouthed self righteous buffet buster known as Jake Knotts. Need I say more? Anyone that is friends with Jake Knotts needs to have their head examined, not be elected to the governor’s office. Looks like the liar is packing this poll, though.
Furthermore, Andre Bauer is pivotal in killing the Roll Call Bill in the Senate. He doesn’t want the people to know who and how they are voting to spend YOUR money. Bauer is a liar and an underhanded back stabber.
Scooter, you are the best argument there is in favor of abortion… really, really late term abortion.
By A person that knows April 21, 2010 at 2:30 am
CNChapin, the Lt. Gov. does not assign or kill bills in the senate. You are giving way more credit for that position than it deserves. Knotts backs his campaigns and Bauer has never returned the favor. Seems to me that Bauer knows that Jake is toxic and that is why he doesn’t support him.
As for the rest of these, shows me that some campaign staff have way too much time on their hands. Let them click buttons instead of actually getting votes in a real way.
By A person that knows April 21, 2010 at 3:20 am
Hey stupid…any campaign run by Richard Quinn will have signs up and down and all around the place. That is just how it is. Lindsey Graham, Henry McMaster and Alan Wilson will have signs all over the place at any event whether it be a USC/Clemson football game or a 15-person debate. Luckily, Alan Wilson is actually a half-way decent candidate as opposed to most others from Quinn.
By ugagirl66 April 21, 2010 at 7:08 am
I am voting for Andre. Anyone who can maintain such a cost efficient campaign and who is willing to stand up for what is right and not what is popular has my vote. He will use our tax dollars wisely, make good choices for our state. He is passionate about doing what is right. As for his private life. THANK YOU… for never putting us on the map with tragic affairs and drama of the heart… Love has no place in politics people. It certainly does not qualify as a good use of our our tax dollars. As long as we have a good Governor who cares for our State and will do what is right for THE PEOPLE could marry grape ape and it wouldn’t matter to me. Just don’t use the peoples dime for love.. That’s all I’m saying! :-) I know we have no worries with Andre. Check out the use of his campaign dollars and you will get a great glimpse of how cost effectiveness works when you use it wisely.
See you at the Polls!
By My .02 April 21, 2010 at 8:57 am
You guys need to check the disclosures for Ken Ard and the SCGOP. It appears Ard isn’t paying his rent for that prime real estate (especially prime given he’s a primary candidate) in the SCGOP headquarters. Maybe he can’t afford it now after only raising $48k last quarter.
By Tony April 21, 2010 at 9:12 am
After taking polls on the GOPs & Dems, and possibly voting in the primaries this June, check out the Independent candidate, who bases his political beliefs on three documents:
1) The Declaration of Independence
2) The Bill of Rights
3) The Constitution

“Bring government back to the people.”
By Mike April 21, 2010 at 9:39 am
Andre Bauer is my choice for Gov. He is the only candidate with small business experience and the man knows how to stretch a dollar, both skills that the next Governor of this state MUST have. Haley and Barrett are to toxic and they both lie (they were “for it” before they were “against it”) basically trying to keep up with who is buttering their bread at the current time; McMaster is just ineffective and goes off chasing stuff that doesn’t even matter (Craigslist) while letting stuff important slide (Yucca Flats, Charleston Navy Brig — Can you say the next Gitmo?) McMaster blusters much and delivers very little.
By Denise April 21, 2010 at 9:42 am
Check out Mr. Gary Burgess. I met him at the Tea Party and he is willing to talk with you. Give him a call. Bill Conner, Nikki Haley so far for me.
By CNChapin April 21, 2010 at 1:23 pm
@”A person that knows” You’re not paying attention. If Bauer was FOR transparency he’d be acting like a leader and shouting from the roof tops that the Senate is intentionally killing the Roll Call bill. Seems to me that since that would mean going against his buddy, Jakie, he is silent on it. If he wants to BE a leader, then he should act like one. He could have also broken Senate rules and assigned it to another committee causing there to be a challenge to his actions and shedding light on the Senate’s desire to kill the bill in the process. There is ALWAYS something a person can do if they want to badly enough. For him to sit back and do nothing speaks VOLUMES!
Furthermore, Bauer’s opposition to Sanford trying to refuse those stimulus funds unless they could be used to pay off debt is all I need to know about Bauer’s fiscal policies. When he started running off at the mouth about the Sanford affair, it told me more about his character. He is an opportunist and doesn’t stand for right or wrong. He stands for what he thinks will make him look good. He really should have just STFU about Sanford’s affair and let that situation play out on its own, but instead he had to stick his nose in it. As for the stimulus, only an idiot who loves big government and putting the tax payers on the hook for astronomical debt would take Andre’s stance. That is NOT fiscal conservative-ism. If you think we should take the stimulus because we paid for it, then stop letting the feds steal money from the citizens of SC. Don’t show up with your hand out.
As for Bauer’s personal life, it’ll eventually make the news when everyone realizes that he is in the closet… with Lindsey Graham. For the sake of understanding, I truly could care less what the sex of the people are whom he has relations with. I think that has no bearing on what kind of job one does (just like having an affair doesn’t) but I think the voters of SC would disagree with me (for better or worse).
Bauer is just another cog in the good ol’ boy machine here in SC. If anyone thinks he’d act any different as governor, they’re naive and foolish. Bauer and the rest of the establishment good ol’ boys in this state need to go. They’ve been running the state into the ground for their own personal gain for too long.
Oh and running a campaign on a tight budget does not necessarily reflect a desire to do the same with the state budget. It is almost impossible to hide excess spending in a campaign budget, so he’s using that to his advantage and touting his fiscal conservative-ism by pointing to his campaign. He has to disclose those financials, so he is exploiting that. When it comes to signing the state budget as governor is when it would really matter. Would he sign an under-handed budget full of lies like is currently being worked on? The measure of a good man is not what he does when people are watching, but what he does when people aren’t watching. Don’t tell me someone is a good man because they are doing good when they know we are all watching or when they know they could be watched. Any slime ball with sense always looks polished and great when they know you’re checking them out.
By CNChapin April 21, 2010 at 1:29 pm
@Fitsnews When are you going to post a similar poll for things like US Rep races? You really need to check out Eddie McCain, Libertarian running against Mr “You Lie!” for District 2. Addison is just another good ol’ boy. He voted against the stimulus, but then wrote a letter to the White House asking for stimulus funds for his district. He’s another opportunist who stands for nothing other than his own self promotion. It’s time to clean house of these career politician types.
Legalize Freedom: Vote Libertarian!!!
By Scooter April 21, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Easy there CNChapin. What goes around, comes around. Be nice and see how many more friends you will get.
By Bruce April 21, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Andre Bauer for Governor. I agree with the poster who stated that McMaster is all talk and NO action; As Attorney General, McMaster has very little “acclaim” and a lot of embarrassement, that whole Craigslist mess had absolutely NO point nor did it benefit our state in any way. Meantime, McMaster continues to leave our state wide open in terms of the Yucca Flats project and McMaster is NOT a leading proponent of the suit against the federal government regarding Obamacare, he is merely one of the sheep following the lead ram (Florida). Haley is not ready to govern much more than her neighborhood and she has outright lied on more than one occasion. Barrett should still be embarrassed to show his face in this state given his yes vote on the first bailout. He is indeed “against it” since being “for it” didn’t work out so well the first time.
By Micah Caskey April 21, 2010 at 3:20 pm
I’m absolutely behind Alan Wilson for AG. I’ve been fortunate enough to know Alan for most of my life and he’s the real deal. I’m proud to have done two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and I can honestly say that Alan is a guy I’d trust right there beside me. I’ve met Robert Bolchoz and Leighton Lord and think them both qualified, intelligent guys with integrity. But, for my money, I’m putting it on the guy I know will do the right thing for South Carolina’s citizens in the darkest hour. Alan’s been in the courtroom as a prosecutor, walking the streets with the cops–he understands the pitfalls and trappings of law in the real world. I’m confident that he will always balance protecting individual rights with protecting families.
Bill Connor is also the real deal. Acknowledging my bias, he’s a guy you can look in the eye and know that he really wants what is best for SC. Aside from casting tie-breaker votes in the Senate, I’m not even sure what the Lt. Gov actually does (does anyone?), but I know that I want one who has character and integrity. Connor does.
By SCConservative April 21, 2010 at 5:45 pm
Bill Connor is the real deal. He is both a social & fiscal conservative and is the kind of candidate that we need. He is a military veteran that understands how precious our freedom is. He is a social conservative as well, check out http://www.voteconnor.com on the issues(listed first is defending the unborn). He supports the fair tax and supporting the Gov to bring jobs to SC by making it more attractive for businesses and individuals to come here. And I’ve done some research on Ard – he supported a tax increase, was delinquent on some of his Florence County taxes by several months, supported pork spending in an economic downturn($30,000 for a Francis Marion statue? Good grief!), and both he & his wife were max contributors to Rudy for Pres, and 1 month later he was Chair for Florence County Rudy for Pres. Vote Ard if you want another establishment RINO. If you want a true conservative who will fight for the people of SC, Connor for Lt Gov all the way!
By Richard April 21, 2010 at 8:59 pm
A vote for Andre is a vote for Jake Knotts as First Lady. Talk about taking us back 25 years!
By CNChapin April 22, 2010 at 8:53 am
@Scooter I don’t want or need friends.
By Conservative Values April 22, 2010 at 8:56 am
We’re in a mess right now because we’ve elected rinos and liberals that certainly do not have conservatives values like Bill Connor.
Bill Connor has proven to me and most of the voters in SC that he’s someone that not only we can trust as Lt Governor but in the future as our Governor or even Senator. (take heed Lindsey)
I can’t stomach the possibility of Ken Ard or Larry Richter buying this election when Bill Connor has such a groundswell of support. I truly hope folks like me actually tell as many primary voters as possible our thoughts on such a true conservative as Bill Connor.
By Jay B. April 22, 2010 at 11:06 am
Whoa! CNChapin, you are certainly not in the closet! The whole world knows that you are a full-fledged BUFFOON!!
I suppose that in your cloudy lil ol’ mind that you think spending more on school buildings and computers, etc. will make our students smarter huh? Perhaps if you would have attended a brand-new school with crisp new and lightning fast computers you would not be as ignorant as you are today??? Folks like yourself, with your “give me this and that” attitude are assisting in the destruction of this state and America. Thanks know-it-all! Although this may come as a surprise to an elementary mind such as your own, PRETTY BUILDINGS AND FANCY TOOLS DO NOT MAKE STUDENTS SMARTER. If a student is motivated to learn, they will learn and achieve no matter the setting provided to do so. It comes down to motivation, which is created by good family values and relationships, such as those of ANDRE BAUER. (Since you stated that you didn’t care and didn’t need friends, perhaps this explains why you are such an ignorant loser). Folks such as yourself think the answer to ALL problems is that the government hold your frightened little hand and GIVE you what you want. Spending is not the answer moron, if it were, enlightened folks such as myself would be surrounded by other highly intelligent individuals; for as we all know past governments have used your philosophy of spend, spend, spend and our education system is well behind that of even some 3rd world countries! Obama’s regime is spending like never before and we are only worse off. School vouchers (which means CHOICE and FREEDOM) is the answer to the failing system we currently have, NOT prettier buildings, more Spanish teachers, etc. ANDRE BAUER is the ONLY candidate with the gall and knowledge to mend this state. Hopefully you will educate yourself PRIOR to the upcoming election and cast your vote for someone who actually has a proven track record for wisely managing MONEY, and success.
Lastly, I am willing to bet that you have not banged a total of 3 women in your LIFE. Folks like you are easy to spot, the one’s who are jealous of ladies men such as Andre are always the first to shoot-off at the mouth with stupid comments such as yours. Sorry you can’t get “any” loser, however bashing the intelligent jocks won’t help your HOPELESS situation!!!
By Terry April 22, 2010 at 4:24 pm
I won’t vote for the Republican candidadte this time, I don’t think. I’m pretty much upset with the direction of the party. Doesn’t mean I’ll vote for a Democrat. But I think the GOP has gone too far to the right wing. And all this nonsense about repealing Obamacare. We need to get real here. Yea, the law stinks, but repeal? Won’t happen.
By Andre Bauer April 22, 2010 at 4:26 pm
I’ll vote for Gresham Barrett because he says he’s opposed Obama the most, and that’s a record right there! Who needs significant accompishments when you can run your campaign on what you didn’t do! Yeah!

I think that Andre Bauer would make a good governor, but he’s probably a homosexual. And everyone knows homosexuality is illegal, and the founding fathers put that in the constitution. Sarah Palin hasn’t endorsed has she? I’ll fall in line behind whatever she says. I hate the Democrat party. They make me agry, because Obama is a Muslim, and he’s well he’s a muslim. If Glenn Beck says to I’ll jump for X Y or Z person, who’s with me? war is peace
