Denard Span: Take That, Mom

By FITSNews || Minnesota Twins’ outfielder Denard Span was a sleeper pick in our fantasy baseball draft this year, putting up some solid numbers with the franchise over the last two seasons – particularly on the base paths.  The Twinkies’ “lead-off man of the future” was also signed to a nice five-year deal during the off-season, which means that the club’s brass envisions him as an integral component of its plan to continue losing to the (damn) New York Yankees in the playoffs year after year (after year) …

Also, Span hits without stepping, which we hear is big with the kids (hat tip, Other).

Needless to say though, Span is no Kirby Puckett … nor Joe Mauer, which means the fact that a female fan was wearing a Denard Span jersey at a Twins’ spring training game Wednesday (against the Yankees) was a bit weird.

Even weirder?  The fact that a foul ball off of Span’s bat hit the woman wearing the Span jersey in the chest during the game.

UPDATE, 1:15 p.m.: Denard Span just lined a ball into the stands and hit a woman who’s wearing a Span jersey. Turns out, it was a member of Span’s family, possibly his mother. Jorge Posada immediately ran over there, then Span ran into the stands to check on her. She seems to be OK, but that was pretty crazy.

UPDATE, 1:31 p.m.: That was in fact Span’s mother. She was hit in the chest, but did not go to the hospital. She’s back in the stands, just not as close to the field as before.

Dude.

We’ve got some issue with our moms, too, but come on!

UPDATE: Apparently this was no love tap … Span’s mom got clocked pretty good.  There’s even an AP update on the incident …

UPDATE II: We just spoke with Span’s owner in the Great Santini fantasy baseball league, who merely asked if Span (the player) was “emotionally scarred.” Gotta love a true fantasy baseball fan!
