More Sanford-Sembler Drama

By FITSNews || There may be a good reason why S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford has been playing both sides of a controversial $134 million “Mega Mall” incentives package for a politically-connected developer – he apparently has obligations that go both ways.

On the one hand, Sanford borrowed an airplane a few years ago from the developer who is aggressively pushing the deal.  On the other hand, he took campaign cash for his reelection from the developer who is aggressively opposing it.

Decisions, decisions …

As it stands now, sources within the governor’s office tell FITS that Sanford remains committed to vetoing the legislation, which would provide GOP heavyweight Mel Sembler’s company with massive tax breaks to build the “Mega Mall on the Okatie,” a 280-acre, 1.5-million-square-foot retail facility in Beaufort County.   As we have noted on many previous occasions, we oppose this deal vehemently.

How come?  Four reasons …

First, this developer has a poor track record when it comes to these sorts of public-private partnerships.  Second, the incentives being offered in this case are of dubious legality.  Third, this facility will do nothing but cannibalize sales (and ultimately jobs) from existing, homegrown retailers who aren’t getting multimillion dollar handouts (but who will most assuredly have to pay for this one).

The fourth reason is the most fundamental to our opposition, though – the fact that government shouldn’t be picking winners and losers in the marketplace.  Period.

Our readers overwhelmingly agree with us, too.   According to the results of a FITS poll published last week, 91.5 percent of respondents oppose the Sembler handout, while just 8.5 percent support it.

While Sanford is on the record opposing the deal, his actions behind the scenes paint a different picture – one of a conflicted politician who wants to have it both ways.  For example, after the governor reportedly told several lawmakers that he wouldn’t “hurt” them if they voted to override his veto, he is now actively lobbying behind the scenes in an effort to get them to do just that.

Crazy, huh?

One reason for Sanford’s schizophrenia may be the fact that the governor feels obligated to both Sembler and Stan Tanger, the former CEO and Chairman of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, which is opposing the Sembler handout.

Back when Sanford still had dreams of becoming president, Sembler – a former GOP fundraising chieftain and two-time U.S. Ambassador – was one of the governor’s high-value targets.  In fact, sources within the governor’s office tell FITS that there was a quid pro quo between Sanford and Sembler last summer whereby the governor agreed to refrain from using his bully pulpit against this legislation and let the bill become law without his signature.

In exchange, Sembler was said to have agreed to support Sanford’s presidential bid financially.

Previously, Sembler loaned the governor his airplane for a 2007 Reform SC fundraiser featuring Jeb Bush.

Obviously, this alleged deal didn’t last very long, though. Sanford’s presidential aspirations imploded last summer when he was caught lying about his whereabouts as part of an effort to conceal an affair with his Latin lover, Maria Belen Chapur.  Subsequent investigations into other abuses nearly cost the governor his current job, while his sustained P.R. meltdown has gone into the books as perhaps the worst response to any scandal … ever.

Of course Sanford is not without his debts on the other side of the ledger, specifically a $3,500 contribution to his 2006 reelection campaign from Stan Tanger.

Here’s a record of that contribution:

stan tanger

And while $3,500 obviously isn’t enough to sway a politician with a bank account as big as Sanford’s, sources tell FITS that the governor – who will be looking for a job next January and (unlike his wife) needs the money – has been seeking to parlay his veto of the Sembler bill into either gainful employment or a stake in a Tanger development once he leaves office.

Yeah …

A few years ago, we never would have believed such a rumor.  Today?  It wouldn’t surprise us in the least, sadly …

Yet even before the myth of Sanford’s purity was shattered by the Chapur scandal, the governor had a history of getting involved in development deals on behalf of his campaign contributors.  Two years, Sanford found himself embroiled in scandal when he alleged that a developer competing against one of his contributors was a “womanizer.”

Ironic, isn’t it?

The debate over the Sembler handout continues this week in the S.C. Senate …

I’m telling you this . . . Sanford wants to be on the Board of Sembler. He will find a way to win in all of this.

By No Name on March 17th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

He is resource diminished…..the butt of jokes of MSM political bull shit for years to come and a rich ex-wife who seems willing to use her considerable intellect and purse to make his life a living hell.

All of this was apparently not a potential reality when he choose to engage in infidelity with this other women….who I still can not beleive has not surfaced in either photos or in person.

So he wakes up and sees that for the first time ever he is completely f***** ……..where is Cubby by the way…..and now is scrambling…..damn embarassing….but really scrambling to have a life after.

Trump show next year as Blagos replacement……Amazing Race with Maria.

I think of him as the ultimate wild card ….destined to go out with bang and capable of saying or doing anything in the last moments.

Yeah, No Name, it’s painful to watch. He looks terrible too.

By Ynotfirst on March 17th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Sanfraud’s problems are just beginning folks.

By Mike Traynor on March 17th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Ha Ha Ha. No Name, you have it NAILED!!

Blago’s replacement on Trump’s next show!

The real problem with Sanford is that there is no “there” there. For years he has cultivated donors, but not friends. And, now that the winds of change are blowing in his face, there is no one to stand with him, shoulder to shoulder as a friend.

He is alone, and it is his own fault for being so superficial.

Fine by me. He deserves everything he will get. (And he never deserved anything that he got.)

By Judy on March 17th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

oh please .. he deserves whatever embarrasment and jokes come his way with or without the soul mate and I say go Jenny … he used her their entire married life… and the only reason I “hope” the two get together is so the soul mate knows what she did and he ends up knowing what he did … big loss for each :O))

Judy – you are absolutely right on – couldn’t agree with you more!!

By Judy on March 17th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

looks like everyone has him pegged as a user / loser and since Trump is pretty specific I don’t see him on w/Trump… and so hopefully a lone and very lonely man to figure out what he did in search of finding his soul maet so he could die know he met her… ridiculous and no sane… he needs mental health care.

By CNSYD on March 17th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Judy, Ms. Sanford used him as much as he used her. She had the money but wanted the “fame” that she thought this “rising star” in politics could bring her.

By bill on March 17th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

how is that a few years ago you wouldn’t believe that a “former” real estate developer would use his political clout and position to help other real estate developers fleece the taxpayers for hundred+ million dollars?
as far as your claim that he handled his scandal so poorly, he still has his job and will be paid state money and benefits for the rest of his life, so i think he handled his scandal pretty effectively, given all the facts.
Lastly, 59% of SC republicans say they think sanford is doing a good job according to a recent poll. LOL pavlov’s dog had more free will to salivate than SC republicans have to think for themselves.

By annie on March 17th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

CNSYF you are so so wrong – she did all she could to get him where HE wanted to be – she could care less about the so called “fame??”- would have been just as happy leading a normal life-raised those boys by herself when he was in Congress-you don’t know her, you don’t know what you are talking about!

Dipshit sanfraud recently made an anti-healthcare ad in which he mused about the “Ides of March”. I thought he said he had “hives on my crotch”, and I fgured “well no shit you philandering sack of smegma”. Not that I harbor any ill will or anything. jus sayin’, not sayin’.

Sanfraud the main ring leader in a state of corruption…

By OperationTailGunner on March 18th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Keep a close eye on the ball, cause its probably a shell game.
Sembler is the “Money Guy” for the RNC…which trumps any advantage that Tanger may have over Sembler.

Sembler usually donates large amounts of cash, and uses thier “NEOCON ROLLODEX” to finance thier politicians…and thats just the money we can see and track!!

Sembler has a long history of using money and bribes to get his way…going back to Bush I and the entire Bush family (Cheney too)
