Downey Named First Team All-SEC

By FITSNews || University of South Carolina point guard Devan Downey became the first Gamecock basketball player since BJ McKie to win All-SEC honors three seasons in a row on Monday – a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing year for second-year head coach Darrin Horn.

After winning a share of the SEC East title a year ago, Horn’s injury-plagued team flopped this year.  USC finished with a 15-16 overall record, and a 6-10 mark in conference play – missing both the NCAA and NIT postseason tournaments.  Fans were put out of their misery last week after USC blew an 18-point second half lead against Alabama in the SEC tournament.

Still, Downey was a unanimous first team All-SEC selection by both the coaches and the AP after leading the conference in scoring with 26.2 points per game.  Joining him on the first team were Kentucky’s super-freshmen DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall, as well as Mississippi State’s Jarvis Varnado and Georgia’s Trey Thompkins.

Downey finishes his career at South Carolina with 1,901 career points – good for fourth all-time in school history.
