By FITSNews || U.S. Rep. John Spratt says President Barack Obama has done a “magnificent job” on health care reform. His words were supposed to mollify a group of Democratic activists, but they could very easily come back to haunt the fourteen-term incumbent come November.
Spratt – who is facing the toughest reelection fight of his three-decade political career in Washington – made the comments Monday at a Democratic Party gathering in Lancaster County.
Here’s his quote, courtesy of the Lancaster News:
I would have liked to see the bill done a bit differently, but he’s (Obama) done a magnificent job on it.
Huh?
Magnificent?
Let’s get this straight … Obama is threatening to shove a socialized medicine bill that Americans have roundly rejected through the U.S. Congress on a party-line vote using procedural tactics designed to short-circuit legitimate debate.
And that’s magnificent?
Also, let’s not forget the fact that we’re talking about one of the greatest expansions of government influence ever.
Sheesh.
And while Spratt can certainly claim that he wanted the bill “done a bit differently,” he voted for it – along with 97.8 percent of the Obama-Nancy Pelosi agenda, according to an analysis of Congressional voting records conducted by the Washington Post.
Spratt’s “Obama the Magnificent” quote will no doubt dominate the headlines, but it was this remark that actually caught our attention:
I would like the opportunity to go and serve for at least another term. Give me the opportunity and for the next two years I’ll do what I can.
He’ll do what he can?
Here’s the question: Can South Carolina – or America for that matter – really afford another two years of John Spratt? Or even another month?
After all, in the four years since Spratt assumed control of the House Budget Committee, America’s debt has grown by $5.4 trillion – with trillion dollar deficits projected for the next several years to come, as well.
It’s sad, too, because there was a time when Spratt represented a more moderate view on fiscal issues.
Also, based on his lackadaisical performance at a series of town hall meetings a year ago (here and here), Spratt clearly seems ready to hang it up but for whatever reason the Democratic leadership in Washington won’t let him.

Wow..I mean, wow…how much do you think he would pay to have that one back?
By Sid March 11, 2010 at 1:32 pm
you’re so transparent, FITS…you can spin it anyway you want, but Spratt is going to beat your boy Mulvaney by at least a touchdown.
By Steve March 11, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Spratt is toast. Will, I want to see a story on conservatives surging in SC-01 and SC-03. Those races are likely to capture national headlines in June and SC-05 will rock the establishment in Nov. What say you?

I am f’ing speechless. Can’t believe he went out of the way to kiss Obama’s ass.

The only way Spratt is in trouble is because he is a democrat. Mulvaney is in the right place at the right time. don’t get me wrong, I hope he wins, but it is tough to beat an incumbent. Money has a lot to do with it. Spratt will get a lot of it from Ostupid for drinking the coolaid.

Magnificent? I don’t think bankrupting the country is “Magnificent” regardless of who’s doing it. I’m still fed up with the lot of them, but I don’t see a lot of bright spots on the horizon, either.
By Frustrated Conservative March 11, 2010 at 5:46 pm
Hey FITS, at least wipe your chin when you’re done servicing Mulvaney– sheesh.
By wisemon March 11, 2010 at 7:46 pm
Spratt must be voted out! He most certainly does not represent his constituents! Isn’t that what it is supposed to be all about! And everyone needs to do what they can to defeat this health care plan of Obama’s and then work hard to defeat Obama next election! If not, we are all up the creek!!!

I wish that Spratt would stop kissing Obama and Pelosi’s backside. However, I think Mulvaney has 2 chances of beating him – slim and none. Spratt has helped too many people on the local level in his district for them to turn their back on him.

Spratt, HOME FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR! WE WILL SEND HIS ___ HOME!
By thirdworldrathole March 11, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Statists like Spratt will have no problem securing re-election as long as 46% of American voters don’t pay taxes.
Eventually, those of us who bother to work, will get sick and tired of being punished for our labor by excessive taxation, and America will rapidly become a third world rat hole.
Like Kenya.
Go figure.

What’s he been smokin?

I know the man, I’ve known him for more than 20 years. Someone call a doctor, he’s obviously had a brain infarction. If the MRI comes back negative, start looking for major pork to arrive shortly.
I know he and his wife hate DC but this was stupid. He also hates Pelosi vehemently. All the claptrap about not representing the people is blah, blah, blah…meaningless. Unless he gets caught schtupping an under aged male aide on Main street in front of the courthouse in downtown York, he’ll win. (no chance of that happening btw)
Constituent services are what rule the day in SC – his staff is great. He runs, he wins.

If he insists upon being just another of Pelosi’s handmaidens, we voters in the 5th district will send him home for good in November.
