Fear The Terrier

By FITSNews || Selection Sunday for this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament (a.k.a. “March Madness”) is less than a week away, but one South Carolina school has already punched its dance card.

With its history-making 56-51 victory over Appalachian State Monday, Wofford has clinched its first-ever Southern Conference Tournament Championship – and the automatic NCAA bid that comes with it.  Sure, the Terriers (26-8) will likely wind up being a sacrificial lamb to Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke or some other top seeded team in the “Big Dance,” but still … at least they made it, which is more than some schools can say.

It wasn’t easy for Wofford.  The Terriers entered the NCAA’s Division I-A in 1996, and didn’t have a winning season for thirteen consecutive years.

Ouch.

Wofford finally broke that streak of futility a year ago, and then this season – after starting conference play 0-2 – the Terriers reeled off fifteen wins in their final sixteen games to claim their first-ever regular season conference crown.

Congrats to Wofford and the city of Spartanburg, S.C. on this well-deserved moment …

Wofford beat South Carolina (in Spartanburg) and UGA (in Athens). They have the ability to run with the big dogs.

Get it? Big dogs? I crack myself up…

Wofford is actually the second school from SC to make the tournament this year. Winthrop won the Big South Conference tournament on Saturday.

Big, big win for Wofford College.

Coach Mike Young is a great guy who really deserves this positive turn of events.

Wofford may not have the firepower to pull off a first-round upset. But the team plays some pretty darn nasty defense, and I think they could very well give a high-seed some major fits (no pun intended).
