“Vanilla” Sheheen
By FITSNews || Originally, the rumor circulating within the Palmetto political world was that our founding editor was “on the payroll” of the gubernatorial campaign of S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley (R-Lexington) or Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer (RINO-Newberry).
The only problem with that theory (well, other than the fact that – unlike some websites – we don’t work for political campaigns) is our frequent and vocal criticism of both politicians.
Sure, we like Haley more than the other candidates (from an ideological perspective), but that doesn’t mean we’ll be cutting her campaign any slack. In fact, we haven’t.
As political observers took note (and scratched their heads) over our repeated battering of all the candidates on the GOP side of the 2010 race, a new theory emerged. In fact, our founding editor (Sic Willie) was asked about it point blank the other day by a mainstream media reporter.
“Are you working for Vincent Sheheen?” the reporter asked.
“Huh?” he replied, a bit taken aback.
“Well you never seem to have anything negative to say about him,” they replied.
Hmmmm …
According to the theory, Sic has a major man-crush not on Sheheen, but on S.C. Senator Tom Davis – who as things stand now would be among the GOP front-runners in 2014 should a Democrat (like Sheheen) capture the Governor’s Mansion in 2010. Therefore, the theory goes, Sic is working to help elect the most “electable” of the 2010 Democrats – a.k.a. Sheheen.
Interesting notion, right?
Unfortunately for all the schemers out there, it’s just not true (although judging from Sheheen’s bank account, we wish that it was).
Here’s the deal …
Despite several offers, Sic Willie made a decision prior to the 2008 presidential primary election to refrain from working for any candidate – which turned out to best thing he could have done for FITS from a credibility standpoint. Obviously, two years ago this website was still just a part-time hobby, but “irregardless” … Sic’s decision was an integral component in turning FITS into what it is today (a.k.a. “the bomb”).
And yes, we know that “irregardless” is not really a word.
Unlike the rest of the S.C. political blogosphere, we weren’t (and aren’t) in anybody’s pocket – which enabled us to alternately praise and criticize the 2008 candidates based on their merits (as viewed through our fiscally conservative lens). We’ve adopted that same approach in 2010, which means that none of the nine “goobernatorial” contenders will be getting a free ride – whether they advertise on our site or not.
But that brings us back to the reporter’s central question … why haven’t we written anything negative about Sheheen?
Well, last time we checked we hadn’t really written anything about Sheheen – in large part because Sheheen really hasn’t done anything.
Seriously, this guy’s “front-runner” campaign is like a friggin’ silent movie, people. He defines “Vanilla.”
As far as we can tell, Sheheen is a nice enough guy, but his voting record is slightly to the left of the South Carolina Senate Republican Caucus (a.k.a. the Lilliputian Leninists) – which ain’t good.
He’s also a thick-accented bumpkin who remains slavishly beholden to this state’s failed status quo with respect to the economy, education, spending and government structure – and worse still he’s had a front-row seat for this ongoing disaster for the past decade.
That means he’s too stupid to figure out that what he’s been doing (a.k.a. spending more of your money) hasn’t worked.
So yeah … he’s a lot like your typical Republican candidate for governor.
Seriously … when you hear Sheheen blast the GOP for its failure to move our state forward (or whatever other easily-memorized pablum he’s spitting out on the campaign trail), keep in mind that it’s been a RINO-Democrat legislative majority – not Mark Sanford – that has been running this state for the past eight years.
Bottom line? When Sheheen starts opening his mouth (whenever that is), rest assured we’ll be there to dissect the B.S. that comes out of it …

Right you are, a nice enough guy but way too liberal for this district, just like Spratt. If he were in Congress, he would be up Pelosi’s butt like Spratt. I want a TRUE conservative in both offices regardless of party.

As a Democrat, I will be voting for Vincent in the upcoming Democrat Primary. He is more of a moderate (and in some ways a conservative) than some of the candidates on the Republican side of the race.
…and Will is correct, Vincent does not have all of the baggage of an Andre or McMaster and does not take Sanfordesque positions that alienate him from the poeple that he needs to get his agenda through.
He is the best choice that we have to move our State away from the national headlines that have stalled up for eh past handful of years.

Countryboy – if he is way too liberal for his district then how does he get elected? Perhaps you are way too conservative for your district and should consider a move to Lexington or Greenville!

FITS:
That’s hilarious! You get questioned by the media for *NOT* questioning someone. Just shows how out of touch they are.

Vanilla? Come on now, Will. What about all that Sheheen has done for the environment? Opposing importation of nuclear waste, efforts to preserve natural and historic land in SC that we need for tourism and rec purposes. He helped lead the fight to block out of state funded vouchers. And he has a huge plan for economic growth and development. Just because you..or others…don’t agree with his issues doesn’t make him vanilla. He’s done far more than some so-called legislators in the state… and he will do a lot more from the Gov’s seat.

So you admit that you’ve already prejudged everything he is going to say as B.S.? That doesn’t seem really that objective.

Who cares about the accent? I am from SC and love that southern drawl. Mark Twain never hid his.
Kudos to Sheheen for being a gentleman, who does appear to not have any skeletons that will pop out of his closet.
In case he reads FITS, I’d like to hear Sheheen’s plans, if he has any, to improve veteran’s care and to clean up the dirty politics which currently exist in small towns all over SC.
Gotta say that if he were running on looks alone, I’d vote 100 times and he’d win by a landslide. No offense meant to his wife or children.

I have checked Sheheen’s campaign website (www.vincentsheheen.com) and discovered that, contrary to the FITSNews report, he has been active and running a very vibrant campaign to become the next Governor.
I think the bottom line is that Vincent hasn’t done anything controversial to garner the attention of the media and the anti-media (FITS News). As a voter, I am impressed by the fact that Vincent is able to quietly, but effectively get the job done in Columbia. Very reminiscent of Carroll Campbell and Dick Riley.
That is EXACTLY what I am looking for in a Governor.

He will have my familes vote in 2010, better choice than the other clowns running on both sides of the road.

An “active and vibrant” campaign?
Fred, shut the f*ck up. Really.

You want to see Vincent Sheheen walk a tightrope on an issue and tie himself up in knots? Ask him for his position on abortion…

Getting excited a/b Sheheen is like trying to get excited a/b Gamecock basketball, let’s hope his campaign has something to run on other than his environmental advocacy (snooze).

I want to see Senator Sheheen’s response to a post on this blog regarding a fundraiser put on for him down in Cheeraw. http://www.fitsnews.com/2009/12/03/former-solicitors-office-shot-up/
No offense to you Senator Sheheen, but your team ought to do a better job of prescreening, otherwise, “you gonna have some splaining ta do”.
By vicupstate on March 8th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Sheheen has no reason to be particularly ‘active’ in his campaign. His (Democratic) opposition is thinning itself out on it’s own. Any smart candidate would save his gunpowder (money) for the real race which won’t start until Sept or so.
He is raising money and bagging endorsements, which is what he should be doing at this stage.
I don’t know if he has the chops to pull this off, but the fact that he isn’t running ads or on the chicken dinner circuit (yet), is not a knock against him.
By Ynotfirst on March 8th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Sheheen was intimately involved in PROTECTING Markie Mark Sanfraud during his illegal, heinous fiasco last summer….
you want more details Sic because they are coming full steam ahead….?
Sheheen is a dip wad and I’d say it to his face, given the opportunity.

Go Cocks – I don’t know the answer as to how liberals get elected in conservative districts, unless the answer is, voters don’t have a clue as to how their representatives vote on issues.
Would love to move to the most conservative district in America, even if it’s IDAHO or somewhere, but can’t leave family that won’t leave Chesterfield County.

FITS so let me get this straight…he is kind of Vanilla…oh sheesh what an insult. Let me guess, we need some more dumbassess like Ravenell and Sanfraud et cetera who may push policies that hurt this state, BUT on the plus side make sure their personal actions also devastate the public trust in our political leaders AND embarrass the crap out of us at the same time. Great Choice! Acutally, on second thought give me Sheheen. The guy is Vanilla and has a drawl (like about 4.25 million others in S.C. including myself) gasp! Oh the misery.
FITS write a real story instead of stories about speculation by unamed sources about stories you have not considered writing yet. Or stories about stories you may potentially write if the right unamed source questioned your opinion about what your thoughts on your stories would be if you wrote them. You are such a compelete idiot that it keeps me coming back hugry for more. You are worse than reality TV, so on that note my sincere congratulations and I wish the real Silence Dogood hadn’t died last Fall – at least I could be assured of some intelligent commentary below your useless dribble – which is so awful it forces me to comment.

sic(k) willie is so full of cr@p. When our Funding Editor read this latest she screamed, “Not in ‘anybody’s pocket’ my arse.”
Then she went on to explain, “sic(k) willie is sucking money under the table from anyone he can.” “He’s in their shorts; not their pockets.”
We are not exactly sure what she means by “sucking money under the table” or by “in their shorts,” but we trust she is not thinking nasty.
We’d hate to picture sic(k) willie in Howie’s shorts. But, our Funding Editor is sure he’s been there. Over and over and over again.

Take your medicine. We expressed an opinion about a candidate – something that hardly seems conniption-worthy.

Put this on your broken record: We just got through blasting SCRG for its position on the “Mega Mall” in Beaufort.
