Historic Wins For “Hurt Locker”

By FITSNews || Kathryn Bigelow’s gritty Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker made history at the 82nd annual Academy Awards Sunday night, taking home Oscars for Best Motion Picture and Best Director – with Bigelow becoming the first woman ever to win Hollywood’s top moviemaking honor.

After grossing just $19.3 million at the box office – on a $15 million budget – The Hurt Locker became the lowest-grossing Best Picture in history.  The movie also won awards for original screenplay, sound editing, film editing and sound mixing.

The much-hyped sci-fi action adventure Avatar – director by Bigelow’s ex-husband, James Cameron – won awards for art direction, cinematography and visual effects.  Cameron was no doubt un-phased by the defeats, though.

After all, his movie has grossed $2.5 billion worldwide after being filmed on a $300 million budget.

First-time winners captured all four of the top acting Oscars – with Sandra Bullock winning best actress for The Blind Side, Jeff Bridges earning best actor for Crazy Heart, Mo’Nique as supporting actress for Precious, and Christoph Waltz as supporting actor for Inglourious Basterds.

As is his custom, our founding editor declined to watch the long-winded, pretentious ceremony, choosing instead to watch Tim Burton’s 1994 classic, Ed Wood, a tribute to the worst director in Hollywood history.

The quality of the films speaks for itself. Avatar is made to be a top grosser film especially with the very creative minds behind it. Unfortunately Hurt Locker’s is made to win awards as precious as this. These are two different things… for sure many will watch the movie as it stirs curiosity to many. Bad that will not be counted as part of the gross sales already.
