By Peter J. Vorster II || I couldn’t really believe the news report I watched recently, describing what the government of Haiti is doing. Yes, I know, Haiti has a government. Kinda surprised me, too, seeing as it doesn’t seem like they do too much other than stand in line for handouts.
But this is what they were putting out the other day …
All relief agencies interested in assisting the Haitian people must be officially approved as a relief agency (read: pay exorbitant fees to “expedite” that process) or pay customs taxes on the relief supplies that are being brought into the country to help assist the devastated population.
You heard that right: Pay customs taxes, which could amount to several thousand or even tens of thousands of dollars for, in most cases, donated equipment or pay a bribe so you can be certified by the Haitian government as a relief organization.
I wonder: Who certified the government of Haiti as a government anyway?
Wait, I forgot “option C.” Yes, the relief organizations could turn the relief supplies they are bringing into the country over to the government for inspection and verification and then the government would give the supplies back. I laughed out loud as I wrote that sentence. Here’s what they’re saying:
Give us cash (read bribes) to allow us to let you help us, or let us rat f*ck your equipment for everything we want and give you the rest back so you can give it to the people who need it.
This is what happens on a national scale when you have people who are used to getting something for nothing. Haiti as a nation is on the welfare rolls of the World Bank and the United Nations and whoever else they can get to spend money on them. Their hands have been out for freebies and now they see a cataclysmic sized opportunity to fleece more money from a sympathetic world.
Well, it’s my tax dollars being spent so I get a say right?
The Marines and Soldiers down there should step in and tell the relief agencies they are free to claim their supplies from the airport tarmac, where they now sit uselessly, at their earliest convenience as there will be no one there to stop them from doing it.
With or without a mandate from the non-functional United Nations, a U.S. governmental command should take over all functions of Haitian government (not hard to do). On its worst day in Iraq the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) couldn’t have dreamed of being as dysfunctional as the Haitians are on a daily basis.
Bottom line America, if you’re going to spend tax dollars providing aid to a decimated group of people, it means that their government lacks the ability to do so. In such a case, the fact of their sovereignty is of little to no significance and should casually be disregarded, should they try to pull stunts like this, to meet the needs of those suffering.
Oh no, we’ve got to be culturally sensitive … suck rope. You either get help the way we want to deliver it or you can help yourselves.
But no, we are weak and don’t want the world to dislike us. I mean, we just had eight years of being internationally hated right?
We’re doing so much better now, right?
Right. Let’s not mess that up.
Take control, provide aid, destroy or eliminate anything or anyone impeding that mission and then leave.
I’ll be sending my donations to a group working in a country that will actually allow those who are attempting to help, do so.
Chile, anyone?

According to today’s news, the western coast of the U.S. is about to be hit by a mega quake. Article states “it’s not a matter of if but when”. I wonder how many nations will come to our aid if it does hit?
We are like ancient Rome when they were invaded and fell because their resources, especially the military, was spread far too wide and thin.
When did it become status quo for our nation to help the rest of the world and ignore its own citizens? Why do we decimate countries and then spend ungodly amounts of money, time, and resources rebuilding them?

Open hand to help….fist in face for bothering. Let the Haitian government deal with there own issues while we deal with ours. Lots of good hard working Americans out of work could use the aid just to survive until the economy either finishes tanking or recovers.
