Paterson Won’t Run In New York

By FITSNews || Two years after replacing a governor who resigned in disgrace, current New York Gov. David Paterson – embroiled in numerous scandals of his own – announced on Friday that he was dropping out of the 2010 gubernatorial race.

Paterson kicked off his 2010 campaign days ago with an angry speech in which he bitterly denounced his critics, but his decision Friday was an acknowledgment that his political goose was cooked.

Suffering from abysmal poll numbers and multiple allegations of corruption, the final nail in Paterson’s coffin came this week when a story ran in the New York Times alleging that Paterson intervened in an assault case involving one of his top staffers.

Paterson became governor in March of 2008 when Eliot Spitzer resigned after being linked to a high-dollar prostitution ring.  His withdrawal is a victory for Democrats, who now get to run New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as their top statewide candidate. Former U.S. Rep. Rick Lazio is expected to run for the Republicans.

Meanwhile, in other scandal-related New York news, U.S. House Ways & Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-NY) was facing calls for his resignation Friday (including one call coming from a member of his own party) after it was determined that he violated House rules by accepting corporate-funded trips to the Caribbean.

Rangel has a history of tax issues, which obviously makes him qualified to serve in Barack Obama’s Cabinet should he be ousted …
