By FITSNews || While two establishment candidates raise millions in special interest money in a Lone Star State gubernatorial showdown, an underfunded, unknown political activist from the middle of nowhere is quietly gaining ground on them both.
Debra Medina – a former GOP party official from tiny Wharton County (where?) – has suddenly become a major player in the 2010 gubernatorial race in Texas, tripling her support in the polls over the last two months as she crisscrosses the state with a limited government, states rights message.
Polling in the low single digits in November, Medina clocked in at 12 percent in the latest survey from Rasmussen Reports.
That jump comes after she turned in a strong debate performance against incumbent Gov. Rick Perry and high-profile challenger Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
Texas Republicans will choose their nominee on March 2, and while Medina at this point finds herself confined to the role of spoiler, her emergence is nonetheless another example of the growing frustration voters have for establishment politicians like Perry and Hutchinson.
We wish her luck the rest of the way …

Medina is gaining in popularity out here but its still a battle between Perry-supporters and Hutchinson-backers and those tired of Perry. It seems to be a groundswell of support for dumping Perry just to have a change of scenery in Austin.

This is called the “Susan Boyle phenomenon”. *(R) Everybody wants somebody fresh from out of nowhere, that doesn’t look the part, and just sweeps you off your feet in one big surprise. Nobody is safe–Republican or Democrat. It’s paints on the ground. Seize the moment. Sell the sizzle not the steak.
