Thurmond Assembles Powerful Team

By FITSNews || Charleston (S.C.) County Councilman and “Fortunate Son” Paul Thurmond has assembled a powerful team of S.C. political insiders to manage his bid for the First Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Henry Brown. Of course, two of the names in Thurmond’s “inner circle” raise serious concerns about his own ideological moorings – concerns which are only amplified by Thurmond’s willingness to support tax swaps (and tax hikes) during his tenure on Charleston County Council.

Could a “RINO” label be in his future?

Anyway, sources tell FITS that Thurmond – son of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond – will be advised by RINO consulting legends J. Warren Tompkins and Rod Shealy, Sr. in his upcoming Congressional bid.  Obviously, these selections hint strongly at Thurmond following Henry Brown’s big spending, big government brand of “Republicanism.”

The other (and infinitely less intelligent) “fortunate son” in the race, Columbia lobbyist principal Carroll A. “Tumpy” Campbell III (son of the former S.C. governor) is being advised by RINO consultant Richard Quinn.  Campbell has made his big government philosophy exceedingly clear during his service on the S.C. State Ports Authority board, from which he was ultimately removed by Gov. Mark Sanford.

In addition to Thurmond and Campbell, Tea party activist and military mom Katherine Jenerette (R – Myrtle Beach) is also running for the seat.

Numerous other names have been tossed out as possible candidates, although at this point none have declared.

Sources tell FITS that several prominent GOP activists and fundraisers are actively courting S.C Rep. Tim Scott, but at this point Scott remains committed to running for Lieutenant Governor.

UPDATE: No word yet on whether Thurmond has also retained that “dude in the powdered wig,” who we’re assuming must have managed his father’s campaigns … you know … back in the 1700s.

A lot of Charleston Republicans hate him for being too cozy with local Democrats. A couple of months ago, he seemed quite happy to be leaving County Council. What gives?

Poor poor Will… you have it all wrong again. You really should stop doing all those drugs. You are like the little boy who cried wolf. We just don’t believe you anymore.

Is Campbell still using his mother’s address to make it appear that he actually lives in the 1st district?
