Charles Woodson Wins An Award He Actually Earned

Over a decade after “winning” the Heisman Trophy because voters decided it was time to give it to a defensive player (as opposed to the greatest college football quarterback of all-time), some deserved hardware found its way into NFL defensive back Charles Woodson’s trophy case.

Specifically we’re referring to the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, which Woodson won Tuesday by garnering 28 first place votes from a panel of fifty reporters and broadcasters who cover the league.

Woodson had arguably the best season of his career in 2009 – his fourth year with the Green Bay Packers after spending eight seasons playing for the Oakland Raiders.  He tied for the league lead with nine interceptions, including three that were returned for touchdowns.  In addition to his picks, Woodson had 63 unassisted tackles and 18 assisted tackles, four forced fumbles (with one recovery) and three quarterback sacks.

Incidentally, the quarterback that Woodson beat for the Heisman in 1997 was named NFL MVP last week.

What’s his name?

Wait … it’ll come to us

Anyway, congratulations to Charles Woodson on receiving a well-deserved (this time) honor.
